Can anyone tell me what this means on an old map? Pic included

It's a very old map and I'd like to know what the P stands for. Is it Pit? That would make sense as it's directly behind what used to be a claypit

Any ideas please?

Look in the key?

PiesNotGuys · 12/03/2022 19:05

I think it’s P for Pump as in water pump.

FlorencePKettle · 12/03/2022 19:06

@tatyr I've only got that pic unfortunately

P is for ancient burial ground where the dead rise and eat your tinned tomatoes while you're alseep.

Tibtab · 12/03/2022 19:08

I’ve seen it used for Pump or Post Office (on old small scale maps)

FlorencePKettle · 12/03/2022 19:08

@Carbiesdreamhouse I'd like that to be true

Water pump

FlorencePKettle · 12/03/2022 19:12

Yes pump makes sense I suppose - would it be like a water pump to the village ?

Is it an Ordnance Survey map?

FlorencePKettle · 12/03/2022 19:16

@Bytrgrewd Yes I think it is

It can be a number of things but Pump and Post Office are the most likely after a quick Google

Unescorted · 12/03/2022 19:24

Looking at the modern names for there - I would say it is a clay pit.

FlorencePKettle · 12/03/2022 19:26

@Unescorted the actual road it backs on to is now called claypit lane. And it was definitely the site of an old claypit

Parish? Modern maps have CP on them which means the same.

gillybean2 · 12/03/2022 19:33

maps.nls.uk/os/abbrev/p.html
This may help, it could be several things…

FlorencePKettle · 12/03/2022 19:33

@Toddlerteaplease I don't 'think' it's parish but who knows?

I'm torn between pit and pump

OP posts:
FlorencePKettle · 12/03/2022 19:36

@gillybean2 that's very interesting - and there is no 'pit' that comes under P.

There is Pump though and I think it has to be that as a claypit would have a water pump near it

OP posts:
gillybean2 · 12/03/2022 19:56

Might be this?

FlorencePKettle · 12/03/2022 20:00

@gillybean2 no not that but I can see why you thought it could be.

Where the P is, is literally in a field. It is behind houses on a new ish estate but it's a very old field where the P is pinpointed and that pump is in what passes for a high street if they make sense. There wouldn't be a nice pump like that in this specific field
@Unescorted the actual road it backs on to is now called claypit lane. And it was definitely the site of an old claypit
Exactly - The road names in England tend to be what is on the site, what is near by or where it is going to. Eg avoid houses on "Riverside" "village name Lea" if you don't like being flooded. Or Buxton Rd in Luton is the southern end of the A6 which runs up to Buxton. The Buxton end is called London Rd. The clay pit lane is on your map and is on the way to the clay pit from the village hence the P being the site of a clay pit.

FlorencePKettle · 12/03/2022 20:05

@Unescorted thanks, I'm now veering towards this. I'm going to take a walk round there on Monday and see what I can see

This is a good website to see what used to be on sites... Old Maps Online.

Bytrgrewd · 12/03/2022 20:13
