Can anyone tell me what this means on an old map? Pic included

It's a very old map and I'd like to know what the P stands for. Is it Pit? That would make sense as it's directly behind what used to be a claypit

Any ideas please?

I think it might just mean Post Office - and because it's such a small scale map it shows it under the village name, not necessarily the precise location of it. On another map it is marked 'P.t' - Post Office with Telephone.

@imthesame the reason I don't think it's a post office is because a post office would literally have to be in the middle - or rather towards the edge - of this very old field. It's away from the 'village' - which doesn't consist of much, it's a drive through more than anything - and a post office there would not make sense.

I don't think?

But looking at your maps I can see where you're coming from.

On my original pic though, I can pinpoint exactly where it is and it's behind the old claypit

I know I'll walk round there to precisely .... nothing

Could you look on an old map here maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/

Downnotdown · 12/03/2022 21:36

I'm not actually sure that it is a P. It's hard to tell because I can't zoom in on it properly but it looks quite different to the other fonts which were always a bit fancy. Could it have been some sort of building?

Can you maybe share a bit more of the map or look at other villages on the map to see if there is anything similar elsewhere?

BobbyGentry · 12/03/2022 21:43

The P is first on 1885 - 1903 OS map

In the 1885 - 1900 OS map, you can spot chemical works above.

@BobbyGentry that's so interesting, just been having a look at that now.

I can see it being a pylon now but I'd have to go and look.

@Downnotdown I'm not good with looking at maps although I'm trying!

Weirdly I can't see that large P anywhere close by

On later maps the p moves about depending on the scale and other detail. I think it’s either the post office or pump which stopped being show on later maps but both are shown on one. The P on your original map may not be exactly where the place is, just the closest they could show it clearly on the map. See how the p moves about in these versions of the map…

gillybean2 · 12/03/2022 22:19

Don’t think my pictures uploaded…

Yes you're absolutely @gillybean2 - it does move around doesn't it - or appears to.

All I want to do is research Victorian bottle dumps Grin maybe I'll expand my search to local history at this rate!

I've stumbled across a local historian though so I may drop him a line

Ooh you could be right @gillybean2

Have fun @FlorencePKettle

Ifailed · 13/03/2022 08:51

here it is on the OS six inch, 1888-1913. There is a PO (post office) marked, along with a P for pump. The W is for well.

Pound - one in my village, built over now but I think in addition to stay animals it was a place you would leave your horse if coming to village by horse back in the day.

gillybean2 · 13/03/2022 22:19

@Ifailed there’s another P on your map too…
