They are playing music... I'm in bed trying to relax..

Can you recommend a good ear plugs brand?

No Sound proofing between properties which doesn't help

I may put my headphones on...

When I was in hospital for quite a while I coped with the noise by wearing in ear headphones and playing 'brown noise.' It helped me sleep.

DespairingHomeowner · 11/03/2022 20:19

Have you asked them to turn it down? Tbh it is quite early & a Friday night so unless it’s outrageously loud I don’t think playing a bit of music is unreasonable

HamSandwichKiller · 11/03/2022 20:25

The wax ones from Boots are the best ones I've used.

Frollop · 11/03/2022 20:28

@pajdl will look into brown noise

@DespairingHomeowner you're right. It's Friday night and playing music helps people unwind. Just wish property had soundproofing.
I've asked in the past for them to turn it down and they didn't like it.
I'll probably fall asleep eventually

@HamSandwichKiller will have a look at them. Thanks

I use ones from a brand called Howard Leight - they’re for construction workers I believe so pretty heavy duty and I wouldn’t use anything else anymore!

GromblesofGrimbledon · 11/03/2022 20:50

I've spent thousands in the past professionally soundproofing a house so I know how much this matters. I am very sensitive to noise. This doesn't work for sleeping but for just relaxing at home you need ear defenders. I got proper industrial ones for operating heavy machinery! They saved my sanity while I was at university.

For sleeping I recommend going to
a specsavers with a hearing clinic and getting custom moulded ear plugs made. They do different types. I have the softest ones. Over £100 but I've had mine over ten years now and they're still good. The foam or wax ones give me the heave. They hurt for one, and the wax ones pick up all the fluff and hair from your bedding.

I think after 10 or so it’s reasonable to ask them to turn it down, or DCs bedtime if you have them

If it’s ongoing can you find a solution like moving your bed to a different wall, adding a rug etc

I find the wax earplugs effective, also playing my own music/rain sounds etc

Dp is renting a flat because he's working away. I went to stay and the noise was unbearable from a neighbouring flat. After 24 hours of it I was knackered and miserable.

Noise in your home you have no control over is awful, whatever it is. You really have my sympathy.

Bessiebigpants · 11/03/2022 21:08

The ones trades people wear from screwfix are really good Mouldable foam ones

whirlygirl · 11/03/2022 21:09

What we did do was record it and sent it to the landlord, who assured us it would be dealt with. Nothing that bad since.

BillMasheen · 11/03/2022 21:12

The Howard leight foam earplugs plus noise cancelling headphones over the top. Then play white or brown noise through the headphones.

SpicePumpkin · 11/03/2022 21:17

I have a husband who snores like a foghorn and I've used these for years. I can't hear anything.

Spectre8 · 11/03/2022 21:29

Play some white noise on loud really drowns out any sounds. I've done this several times when neighbours getting work done and the workers have their radio on so loud I can concentrate on my work. Works wonders.

Frollop · 12/03/2022 20:08

Thank you for all of your feedback, it's appreciated. Will look into the advice. I think I'm quite sensitive to noise as it puts me on edge from my previous experience with them.
I fell asleep with my earplugs yesterday and could hear the music but managed to sleep.

They are playing music again which I can hear a bit through headphones... I'm watching something online. It's not too bad... fingers crossed.

The dream is a detached property with quiet neighbours if I come into moneyGrin

@whirlygirl to live in peace is important to me...the simple things can be hard to obtain sometimes. I hope your DP finds somewhere quieter.

@DespairingHomeowner moving bed and adding rug doesn't make a difference sadly but will look for wax earplugs.

These are the best I've ever come across, and I've tried a few because the ex works in noisy environments and used to bring all sorts round.

ChoiceMummy · 12/03/2022 21:35

As odd as it may sound, you maybe better off trying to sleep with an audio book or podcast on, but not via headphones. I tend to find the focus necessary to hear far cancels out environmental noise.

Molly70 · 12/03/2022 23:10

I have found that the silicone ones work best for me. I find ear plugs very uncomfortable usually but these ones you can mould and fit to block sound

adriftabroad · 12/03/2022 23:14

You really have my sympathy too. I lived through this situation and it was living hell.

I reported them to the police eventually. They toned it down but it was the uncertainty of when and how long. Rented flat so i moved in the end.

hairyhorace · 12/03/2022 23:18

Noise cancelling headphones - Bose Quiet comfort and Sony wh-1000xm4 (xm4 are just out so xm3 are much reduced now) are the best. They have saved my sanity and they were worth every penny.

For sleeping, earplugs block out the worst but I've found masking it with a white noise youtube is more comfortable than wearing earplugs. You can actually double earplugs up with headphones if the bastards are being particularly irritating.

You have my sympathy because the inability to escape other people's noise is SHITE

PoleFairy · 12/03/2022 23:20

Silicone ear plugs. Think it's a pack of 8 you get from savers for £2 and I use each pair for about 3 nights and then have to chuck them (they say dont reuse). They are literal noise blockers. I feel guilty about the waste but I sleep

"999 operator, which service do you require?"

"All services please, I can hear music coming from next door, and it's well past 8pm on a Friday night."

"They're on their way. We'll scramble the RAF for good measure."

whirlygirl · 12/03/2022 23:46

I wouldn't ever take the piss now I've experienced this. Our other neighbours notified the police the same night we complained to the landlord. I don't think it was an overreaction at all.

It was a mixture of yelling and thumping (shit) dance music which pervaded every room in our flat. There was no way to sleep through it nor know when it was going to stop.

I returned home to my detached house and felt bloody lucky,

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 12/03/2022 23:51

Bose quiet comfort. Yes they are expensive. But still.

It was like buying sanity.
