I feel so poorly. Easy dinner ideas for young children when you're sick?

Hello!

I'm hardly ever Ill. Usually just a cold that I manage to plod along with, but last night I woke up and I have felt like hell ever since.

My whole body aches, Sicky, hot etc. I'm currently on the sofa. DC are at school and Toddler DC is playing with her toys and has cebeebies on.

DH is going to do the pick up from school later on his break at work, (but will be going straight back to work until the evening)
so luckily I don't have to worry about going out today.

I'm a terrible cook on a normal day. Spag bowl and an easy roast dinner are about the best I can rustle up. I'd absolutely love to be able to cook well! Blush

I have a slow cooker but I've never used it. I'm thinking today might be the day?!

I have chicken, small potatoes, carrots, peas, could I just walk them in the pot? I literally feel so so sick at the thought of cooking but I've got to feed the kids!

Are there any wise slow cooker cooks that can advise at all?

Beans on toast

ExpatForLife · 11/03/2022 10:46

Put the chicken, carrots, potatoes in the pot with some liquid (broth or tomatoes?) - add the peas at the end.

If it were me though we'd be having an Uber Eats night.

Feel better!

Jacket potato and beans/cheese, fishfingers or scrambled eggs on toast. I’d ignore the slow cooker for today in your shoes. Hope you feel better soo .

Ofcourseinamechangedforthisyou · 11/03/2022 10:48

Beans on toast was invented for exactly this scenario. Keep the chicken for tomorrow

Jacket potatoes with cheese and baked beans would be fairly easy. I'd leave the chicken etc for another day personally.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 11/03/2022 10:53

Pasta mixed in with broccoli, peas, sweetcorn, cream cheese and pesto.

Easy and healthy.

Notanotherwindow · 11/03/2022 10:55

Something on toast or jacket potatoes with cheese/beans

Caterina99 · 11/03/2022 10:58

This is the exact scenario that I always keep an emergency packet of fish fingers and potato waffles in the freezer for

Pasta with pesto? Or mine would be happy with plain pasta and cheese to be honest. Throw in a bit of ham and some frozen veg and that’s a pretty decent meal

If only my kids would eat beans on toast! Blush

One of the DC has autism and beans are a no go unfortunately, it makes getting a takeaway a bit difficult too.

They are all very fond of soft veg though and I was just thinking about getting some healthy stuff in us before the whole house inevitably gets poorly too.

Thank you all! Just had some floradix so hopefully get a bit of energy soon!

Cereal

Blurp · 11/03/2022 11:06

Could DH make/bring sandwiches when he brings them back from school, and then you give them those for dinner? Or just do toast or cereal or something, for one day it'll be fine!

Blurp · 11/03/2022 11:08

Or can you order something on JustEat or Deliveroo from a local takeaway?

Therebutforthegrace · 11/03/2022 11:12

Mine eat porridge for tea in this scenario, made in the microwave, with a separate bowl of peas/carrots (or whatever else is in the freezer), also done in the microwave, with a spoonful of honey on both bowls. Weird, yes. But easy, and moderately healthy, and as far as they are concerned, a treat!

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/03/2022 11:14

Boiled eggs, soldiers, fruit salad, yoghurt.

'Spag bowl' sorry a spag what????

HalloHello · 11/03/2022 11:16

Pizza party friday night would be my go to! In fact it is what we are having tonight as the baby is poorly.

Or fish fingers and waffles, beans or scrambled eggs on toast, cereal and peanut butter sandwiches. I wouldn't be cooking at all.

Oh come on you must know that this is a simple typo 🙈
SpringBeavers · 11/03/2022 11:18

Oh sorry just saw the beans being an issue.

Scrambled eggs on toast or bacon butties with some fruit on the side?

Clearly spag bol. Hmm

Op what about warmed up wraps and they could fill with vegetables/cheese/chicken bits etc.

unluckyinlife · 11/03/2022 11:20

My daughter favourite is pasta with tuna, sweetcorn and grated cheese! But pasta can be mixed with any veg and meat (e.g. your chicken!) If you wish. I hope you feel better soon xx

ENoeuf · 11/03/2022 11:20

Do you have pesto? Mine love spaghetti new potatoes peas and pesto?

wildthingsinthenight · 11/03/2022 11:21

Do a picky plate each for them (MN loves that phraseWink)
I do this once a week as I have an unpredictable chronic illness.
Crackers/toast cheese ham salad fruit yoghurt apple slices grapes cereal bar etc etc. We call it a carpet picnic and put a blanket down. I bet they love it.
Hopefully you feel a bit better tmrw and if not DH can do a hot meal.
Hope you feel better soonFlowers
