I feel so poorly. Easy dinner ideas for young children when you're sick?

Hello!

I'm hardly ever Ill. Usually just a cold that I manage to plod along with, but last night I woke up and I have felt like hell ever since.

My whole body aches, Sicky, hot etc. I'm currently on the sofa. DC are at school and Toddler DC is playing with her toys and has cebeebies on.

DH is going to do the pick up from school later on his break at work, (but will be going straight back to work until the evening)
so luckily I don't have to worry about going out today.

I'm a terrible cook on a normal day. Spag bowl and an easy roast dinner are about the best I can rustle up. I'd absolutely love to be able to cook well! Blush

I have a slow cooker but I've never used it. I'm thinking today might be the day?!

I have chicken, small potatoes, carrots, peas, could I just walk them in the pot? I literally feel so so sick at the thought of cooking but I've got to feed the kids!

Are there any wise slow cooker cooks that can advise at all?

Are DC having a hot school dinner today? If so a sandwich and snacks will do, thats what my LO has on days where he has a hot meal at nursery and we get home at dinner time

Ducksurprise · 11/03/2022 11:26

To answer your question yes, you can just wash the carrots and potatoes (top and tail the carrots) and shove it all in the slow cooker. What type of chicken is it?

Ducksurprise · 11/03/2022 11:26

Cut of chicken I mean

Yeah I guess sandwiches and picky things/ a tin of soup will be fine! I tend to over think this kind of thing. I just dread them getting poorly too. Especially recently diagnosed DC with autism it's been a tough old road and she doesn't cope well with illness.

They don't have hot lunches at school they are so picky. I made their lunches for today last night before bed when I felt fine luckily.

Thank you everyone for the help.

Sorry about the typos, I guess being sick is a poor excuse for such things Wink

@Ducksurprise chicken breast! It's well in date though so I might try the slow cooker tomorrow with some of the suggestions 🤞

I have an austistic child and sometimes just have to serve up tinned tomato soup and white bread and butter sandwiches. Whatever fills their bellies is good enough on occasion. I understand the worry about it though- If it helps I recommend getting some of those complan powders. I can sometimes make a complan and ice cream milkshake and know that some sort of nutrients are going in.

Hope you fell better soon. Thanks

I would roast the potatoes and carrots whole with the chicken in the oven or poach them in the slow cooker, then microwave the peas. But if your DC has autism, I appreciate poached chicken and roast new potatoes may be too different from "normal" roast chicken and boiled new potatoes.

Comedycook · 11/03/2022 11:48

In your situation...I'd happily give them sandwiches, beans on toast, cereal, shop bought pizza, frozen nuggets and chips

FelicityFlops · 11/03/2022 11:49

Boiled or scrambled eggs, buttery toast soldiers with Marmite, apple or clementine.
If it has to be a "proper meal", fish fingers (in a the oven) with mash or baked potatoes and beans or peas or other veg.

Billandben444 · 11/03/2022 12:16

I second the picnic theme. A hot meal isn't more nutritious than a well-balanced cold one.

CurryLover56 · 11/03/2022 12:21

Spag bowl isn’t a typo because it’s used so often but it is wrong! I never understand why people know it’s spaghetti bolegnese but shorten it to spag bowl!

Vodka1 · 11/03/2022 12:21

I would defo just do sandwiches. Crisps/fruit.

Picnic tea, lunch but bigger.

But don't you have anything frozen in you can just pop in the oven and leave? Nuggets and waffles type deal?

McDonald's if they eat it / you can bare to answer the door whilst feeling shit.

Hope you feel better soon.

2 Cold meals in one day wont hurt them I promise! Take the easy route.

Dresslover1950s · 11/03/2022 12:44

A bowl of spag clearly

Dresslover1950s · 11/03/2022 12:45

I’d probably get McDonald’s if it was me I can’t stomach the stuff but most kids seem to like it mine does anyway

nearlyspringyay · 11/03/2022 12:48

Pic Nic tea or order in

WindyPopPops · 11/03/2022 12:51

Anything I could put on toast
Pop tarts/cereal
Packet of crisps and a Mars bar
Honestly for one or two days as long as they are fed when I'm ill I'm happy
