No catering on 7 hour flight...

I booked flights for me and OH last month and have just gone into my booking to try to order a GF meal for me - I'm coeliac. But there is no catering on this flight. This is OK (kind of... ) for me, but OH is type 1 diabetic and could really do with a meal half way through. I've never been on a flight this length that doesn't offer catering. Is this a new thing? The flight wasn't cheap (not Easyjet or anything like that).

Is he on fixed insulin dosages instead of carb counting? I thought all adult Type 1s carb counted now.

HollowedOut · 10/03/2022 16:08

Surely if you “look out for each other” but anything you are likely to want to make yourself would be overly carby then just make him something else that would suit his requirements?

No. I'm going to force feed him carbs all through the flight.

(Seriously...)

Soooo……there’s no problem then?

ikeepseeingit · 10/03/2022 16:12

Hi OP, definitely get a mini cool bag. Buy yourself a salad in the airport but take snack foods for the journey too. I'm thinking babybel/cheese, apple, ham/salami.

Get there early and eat a meal at the airport. Then he can have salad/ whatever you've picked up in wh smiths 3-4 hours into the flight and he has snacks to tide him over too.

nearlyspringyay · 10/03/2022 16:12

We did Iceland Air LGW - DEN, no catering, you could buy on board, we just stocked up before we got on the plane.

No!

The lovely Mumsnet posters have really helped so thanks to all of those who advised.

I'm still puzzled as to the lack of catering on a 7 hour flight but it'll be fine.

Have breakfast at the airport or lunch depending when your flight is. Then I'd just grab something for the plane in departures, it should be fine for a few hours !

notacooldad · 10/03/2022 16:13

He normally eats healthily, vegetarian, low carb
He can still make one if these to eat.
I usually take a home made buddha bowl

Goblinwife · 10/03/2022 16:14

I'm surprised they aren't offering anything. We have a flight to the US booked with BA and I've ordered my special meal for that, so they are still offering it.

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 10/03/2022 16:14

Do they not offer snacks either ? Like paninis etc?

BlanketsBanned · 10/03/2022 16:15

Are you sure there is no inflight food, the website clearly says there is but the only special meal you can book is Kosher

Dont you mean poutine lol
HaggisBurger · 10/03/2022 16:17

@Totallyconfusedaboutlife

It's 7 hours though. Won't anything we pick up from the airport be rancid after 3 or 4 hours though?! (I realise I'm sounding quite precious here... I just don't want OH to be having blood sugar issues mid-flight...).
Rancid? You are going on a 7 hour flight not a 3 day trip to the Sahara. Just buy some food in Pret at the airport.

@Midlifemusings

Surely he knows how to pack himself a lunch of foods he can eat. Cheese, some fruit, whatever else. If you are crossing borders, then it just needs to be consumed before landing / customs.

Why does he not know how to manage his own food for a day? Has he never packed a lunch?

Most airlines have food that can be bought, even if meals aren't served.

Whether or not he can pack his own lunch is likely to be academic - its years since I was able to take hand luggage food through security at an airport.

You are reliant on shops being open between security and the flight. It can be quite a problem if you have allergies/dietary restrictions and have a night flight/small airport before a long flight.

Parpophone · 10/03/2022 16:18

@Totallyconfusedaboutlife Ooooh it took a little while for that comment!!! You are losing your touch, clearly

What "touch"?
I have no idea what you mean, although I see that your subsequent replies to people who are trying to help have also been less than polite.

@Choccy21

I haven't read the whole thread bit isn’t it quite unusual not to be offered a meal on a long flight? I’d say 7 hours is a long flight to warrant being given a meal.Is this because of covid?
More a case of cost cutting...often rebadged as covid.
Totallyconfusedaboutlife · 10/03/2022 16:20

@HaggisBurger read the thread - somebody has already made that snippy comment!!! Wink

Heathrow's ok - you can get Pret a Manger stuff. I always shop there before a flight anyway as the food's usually nicer - protein pots, salad bowls, fruit salads etc.

Thanks - we haven't really used these outlets so need to investigate.

the stuff I will take for me will be very carby and that may not be the best for OH.

Then take something that is suitable for him. It’s not rocket science.

DameHelena · 10/03/2022 16:23

I'm really surprised at no food on a 7-hour flight. I'd call the airline to double-check.

eurochick · 10/03/2022 16:23

I'd be surprised if there isn't a trolley service with sandwiches and similar on the plane. But I always take my own as it's unlikely I can eat any of it (I'm lactose intolerant). At least taking your own food you have control over it. I've been served a normal dairy yoghurt as part of my supposed lactose free meal before so I don't trust airlines to get it right. And the consequences for me would be much less severe than for a diabetic served the wrong thing.

@BarbaraofSeville
I'm now wondering if this is the same couple where the OP was fretting about what her DH would eat while she was in hospital having a c-section.
