No catering on 7 hour flight...

I booked flights for me and OH last month and have just gone into my booking to try to order a GF meal for me - I'm coeliac. But there is no catering on this flight. This is OK (kind of... ) for me, but OH is type 1 diabetic and could really do with a meal half way through. I've never been on a flight this length that doesn't offer catering. Is this a new thing? The flight wasn't cheap (not Easyjet or anything like that).

Probably because you made it about him being diabetic then were rude as fuck to anyone who mentioned his diabetes Hmm

TyrannosaurusRegina · 10/03/2022 16:46

Boots etc sell those Bol pots, they're protein pots and I'm sure pret does the same. Or maybe a nice meal at an airport restaurant then snacks as others are saying. You'll find an easy work around.

Why not give the airline a call? If it’s not included then they probably have food to purchase on board and you can ask if they are able to cater for him

No, I was rude as fuck to those few posters who intimated I was being controlling and over-managing of his diabetes.

I have been lovely to the many posters who have been really helpful.

Yeah I probably should do that. Just cannot face the 'due to Covid we are exceptionally busy' messages.

OP you probably already have this covered but my DH is a T1 diabetic too and he always has mini packs of haribo (the little ones that they put in party bags) for when he is travelling as they keep well and seem to be just right for dealing with emergency drops in blood sugar. It might be worth taking a few packs with you?

chasegirl · 10/03/2022 16:50

Yeah I meant taking food from home

riveted1 · 10/03/2022 16:51

@Totallyconfusedaboutlife

There are so many foods that won't spike blood sugar that can be kept at non ambient temperatures!

Rye/seeded crackers, a whole avocado (relatively easy to peel on plane), sachets of nut butter, dried edamame beans/pulses in snack pots.

Pack a load of that, have a hearty meal at the airport, pick up some additional food from pret.. He isn't going to have blood sugar dips if you plan.

Knittingnanny2 · 10/03/2022 16:52

Pre lockdown I flew on Norwegian air to see my son in New York so about hours. It was a buy what you want to eat on the plane from the trolley service. I recall getting stuff after security and just buying cups of tea on the plane
It’s made me double check our flight ( fingers crossed for Neg covid test!) for Singapore next week as that is 13 hours. Mr knittingnanny would think he’d die of starvation if it wasn’t catered!
I’m going to take snacks as well just in case!

Calandor · 10/03/2022 16:52

Buy a sarnie and snacks in the airport and take them in with you. I always do it in case the food is gross. Cheeky Boots meal deal or something.

riveted1 · 10/03/2022 16:52

(I have a health issue that is exacerbated by blood sugar surges and dips, so am very experienced in neeeding healthy snacks every 4 hours ;) )

Mrstwiddle · 10/03/2022 16:54

Sadly, I’ve flown lots of times with Air Canada (they’re cheap) but rubbish. However, I recently flew with West Jet, who had stopped doing meals too when I flew with them in the past. I got my Boots meal deal, ate it and 30 mins later they came along with actual meals, maybe to do with covid?

Calandor · 10/03/2022 16:54

@Totallyconfusedaboutlife

It's 7 hours though. Won't anything we pick up from the airport be rancid after 3 or 4 hours though?! (I realise I'm sounding quite precious here... I just don't want OH to be having blood sugar issues mid-flight...).
It'll be fine. Planes are cold. Kids wait 3/4 hours before lunch at school to eat their packed food.
ShoppingBasket · 10/03/2022 16:55

Freeze a cool bag the night before and keep some cool packs in it while in car. Leave cool packs in car before leaving. Nice pasta salad that can be eaten cold and some nice snack bars or fruit

Noname1999 · 10/03/2022 16:56

If you're flying out of Heathrow a lot of restaurants offer in flight meals that you take with you. My husband got a lovely meal from Fortnum's once and it was in an insulated lunch bag.

Mrstwiddle · 10/03/2022 16:56

I also picked up covid from the flight, as did my son when he flew a month earlier. Just something to bear in mind,

Sandwich be rancid?!?

Apple? Crisps?

Really?

Nocutenamesleft · 10/03/2022 16:57

@picklemewalnuts

Does he eat nuts, cheese and eggs (antisocial though)? Presumably as a diabetic, he needs protein and fat rather than carbs.

Nuts will work for him.

Carrots

And maybe a big meal shortly before flying.

They won’t let you take nuts on a flight.
Funkyslippers · 10/03/2022 16:59

Yeah, complimentary meals on aircraft are long gone. But they usually have hot food you can buy

jay55 · 10/03/2022 17:01

If you get a cold can with your food it'll act as an ice pack and help keep it fresh.

TravellingFrom · 10/03/2022 17:01

I have to say @Totallyconfusedaboutlife I would have expected to have a meal on a 7 hours flight. I don’t think I would even had thought about checking that so I’d have been very hungry if it had been me….

I have to say. I like those meals. Not for the meals but because they break the journey a bit.

TravellingFrom · 10/03/2022 17:03

It sounds like it’s the restaurants once you’ve passed security that are making the money now instead…..

I think it’s a shame. False economy all the way…

DarkDarkNight · 10/03/2022 17:04

It will be fine. I missed the deadline to order a vegetarian meal on a Transatlantic flight and just bought pasta and snacks at a coffee shop. No cool bag and it was fine.

I’m sure there will be some more protein based options, but also take some of his normal snacks and protein bars just in case.

DottyHarmer · 10/03/2022 17:06

I wish they’d bring back airline meals as the thought of people opening Tupperware boxes containing tuna and -omg - eggs is making me retch just thinking about it. Passengers scoffing McDonalds on US internal flights is gross, too. I was once on a very bumpy internal flight from Detroit and my fear was at least on the back burner as I was too busy being enraged by my neighbour licking his fingers. Eeeuuuggghhh.
