Apple watch help - is it worth it?

VerandaSanta · 07/03/2022 16:11

I've been thinking about getting an apple watch, but not sure if it's worth it? I'm confused as it says the watch needs to be within 10 meters of the phone to work - but what's the point in that? If I'm within 10 meters of my phone surely I'll just look at/answer my phone? Am I missing something?

I work in a school so it would be handy to see any important notifications (obviously just a quick glance). But not if I need to be within 10 meters of my phone, that would be pointless the minute I walk out of the staffroom.

Thanks.

Yes, get the celluar version. I've never missed a call since getting mine, even if I forget my phone. It's also very handy for finding my phone! I wouldn't be without one now.

Thank you- so the cellular version works to receive messages even if you're not within 10 mtrs of your phone?

I carry the watch rather than the phone around, it works fine without the phone.

Thank you, is that even if you're far away?

Whenever I look on the apple support it just says there's only certain apps you can use if you're out of range whereas I only need it for calls and texts x

Yes, miles away. The phone stays at home most of the time, I go skiing, running etc without it.

YouHaveNoAuthorityHereJackie · 07/03/2022 17:45

Love mine. I’m hard of hearing and having it on my wrist means I never miss a notification and don’t have to worry about hearing my phone at all. I wouldn’t be without mine now

There are 2 types: Wi-Fi or cellular.

The cellular you put a SIM card in, you get a duplicate of your phone SIM card so your watch works completely independent t9 your phone.

The cheaper versions is the Wi-Fi and that needs to be within a short distance of your phone if you want to use it to make/take calls or send messages.

I'm happy with the Wi-Fi version. I don't much care about accepting every call or immediately answering messages so if I don't have my phone to hand I am still happy with the payment, heart rate......functions that work just with the watch.

Thanks so much everyone I'm so pleased I asked Smile

The celluar is built in, you don't put a sim card in it. It sets it up from your phone, you need a seperate subscription bolt on with your phone package. I'm on ee and it's about an extra £5 per month.

It's handy in school if you don't want to be seen in class checking messages on your phone. Looking at your watch is less obvious.

cliffdiver · 07/03/2022 18:25

I have the cellular 7.

As long as your phone is turned on and connected to WIFI/4G etc you do not need your phone near you to answer calls / texts.

If your phone battery does, the cellular will not work on your watch.

You need to get a plan with your mobile phone service provider.

The battery is dire, it has to be charged every day. On that basis, I wouldn't recommend it.

You also can't compose new Watsapp messages - only reply to notifications, which is a pain.

Not the average teenager it isn’t!

cliffdiver · 07/03/2022 18:28

If your phone battery dies, not does

flashpaper · 07/03/2022 18:50

I have the wifi version, used mainly for workouts and step tracking. I like feeling a buzz when my phone is in my pocket or handbag and it means I never miss a call now. I have to be bare below the elbows at work so I wear it on my ankle when I'm there.

AForkTooFar · 07/03/2022 18:55

Be aware that cellular only works with ee, o2 and vodaphone.

hellooojoe · 07/03/2022 19:04

I didn’t get on with mine, bought the non-cellular version and sold it after a few weeks. I kept forgetting to put it on!

purplesequins · 07/03/2022 19:14

depends what you want.
for running/exercise it works without the phone nearby.
I never take the phobe on a run, but also don't want to receive messages or calls when running either.

it's great as a silent alarm clock as you can set it to vibrate on your wrist only.

2DogsOnMySofa · 07/03/2022 19:42

I won my iwatch 6, it's the cellular version so I don't needy phone near me. I wasn't bothered by owning an iwatch but now I've got one I wouldn't be without it.

deesolovely · 07/03/2022 21:21

Am I the only who hates the iwatch. Honestly the biggest waste of money ever. Half the apps don't work. Charging stopped working after a few months. Won't turn on when I lift my wrist and constantly going into night mode so I can't see the damn screen. I have tried all the fix its I can find and nothing. On top of which it needs recharging every day. I'm going with the garmin next time as has everything I need at half the price and only needs charging once every few days.

VerandaSanta · 07/03/2022 21:38

Thanks everyone, just ordered. £9 a month for the first 6 months then £14 thereafter on o2. I've got 14 days to change my mind as well so I can always return if I don't get on with it.

Not the best start- I didn't realise you needed a special charger. So I have literally no way of charging it!!!

OP posts:
YouHaveNoAuthorityHereJackie · 08/03/2022 13:18

The cable will be in the box. If you mean the plug, these are so easy to buy in most super markets, or Amazon. One thing I’d really recommend is a watch face protector, you can get cheap ones on Amazon. My watch would be scratched terribly without it

VerandaSanta · 08/03/2022 13:19

Thank you, yes I mean the charger. We live in the middle of nowhere so I won't be going to the supermarket for a while, I'll have to see if I can get one from Amazon. Still frustrating though.

Thank you.

Isn't the plug the same as your iPhone one and the lead should come with the watch

no. it's a round magnetic thingy. most supermarkets/pharmacies have them.
