Eon customers - are you moving to their fixed tariff?

I'm tying myself up in knots trying to understand the ins-and-outs of it all but meno-brain and fibro-fog are making my brain hurt with things like "don't switch to fixed unless it's less than 75% more than the current price cap" (Martin Lewis).

I'm on Next flex, variable. Currently pay £118/month for gas and electric. I have the option to change to their V12 fixed tariff at £173.89/month.

Should I switch?

@cakeorwine you did an amazing thread - can you offer any advice?

I am with Eon Next also just being moved over from Eon, I believe it is just a rebranding name change situation not that Eon have gone bust. I have no idea what the answer to your question is but I would love to know, my fix deal finished over the weekend currently paying £73 a month just been billed and still £100 in credit, I don’t know what my bill will be like for March and dread to think what April will look like when the price cap goes up. It is all very scary at the moment with price increases across the board.

teenagetantrums · 07/03/2022 10:23

Yes l fixed on the V11 last week before Martin Lewis told everyone to do and it got withdrawn. We will be paying £81 a month. Currently paying £67. I just wanted to fix now so l knew what we would be paying for a year. It's bound to go up again in October.

Don't con ce trade on the monthly amount look at the rate price and standing charge.

motherofawhirlwind · 07/03/2022 10:27

I messaged Eon on Facebook and asked if I could go onto v11 as the website crashed and they allowed it....? That was the one Martin Lewis recommended. Worth a try?

hoochyhag · 07/03/2022 10:42

Just fixed to v12 for 12 months. £87 per month, currently paying £81 on eon flex.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/03/2022 10:47

You should do the sums based on your usage and the unit/daily charge rates because it will be different if your gas/electricity ratio is not typical. You also can't assume that both prices are based on the same usage.

But based on the numbers you've posted, if they're for the same usage, which is what you actually use and the £118 pm is on the current tariff, ie not including April 22 or any past debt, then £118 increased by 54% (the amount it will go up in April) is nearly £182 pm, which raises alarm bells, because it sounds unlikely that Eon would currently allow you to fix at less than the April 22 price cap.

Run the numbers properly for your actual annual usage before making a decision.

I haven't fixed because it's a condition of the deal to have smart meters and there's no chance they'll be able to change my gas meter to a smart one.

teenagetantrums · 07/03/2022 11:00

Positvelife. As long as you agree to have the smart meter put in they will honour the taffif if they can't do it. We always agree to have them. Every year the man comes and says no we can't do it and we stay on the lower taffif.

luckylavender · 07/03/2022 11:04

I've stayed on variable. The difference was an extra £29 a month. It's just gone up £73,a month so I'm taking my chance. Who knows what will happen?

2DogsOnMySofa · 07/03/2022 12:20

I've just fixed via the V12 deal, from my variable rate (I moved last year and had to move to e-on). I've fixed it from April 1st onwards. I won't save much until the next hike in October

MidnightMeltdown · 07/03/2022 12:27

I've just fixed on v12 too. The next flex rate was £118 a month for me, and v12 fix was £137. I think it's worth it.

HoollyWugger · 07/03/2022 14:16

My current flex rate will be £173/m from April; V12 will be £200, so less than a pound a day extra, and with another increase in October, I think it will be worth fixing on the V12.

Lighter and warmer days; DS working from home two fewer days than at present so that will make a positive difference too.

Oh really? I might do that then. I saw something that suggested they would revert it to the standard pricing if they couldn't fit them
HoollyWugger · 08/03/2022 12:56

Jeeez, I've gone to switch to V12 and it's replaced with V13, 7p more than V12 was per kWh and double my current kWh price!

Bettyhatesavocados · 08/03/2022 13:40

Could I ask a question? If you go an a variable tariff and it's turning out not to be the best for you, am I right in assuming that you can leave this kind of tariff without exit fees at any time and negotiate a fixed tariff? Thanks.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/03/2022 14:05

Yes you can leave and take a fixed tariff.

However it's likely to be very much more 'take it or leave it' rather than there being any element of negotiation.

Hence the advice to check rates carefully before fixing as many are incredibly expensive so not necessarily the best option.

crossstitchingnana · 08/03/2022 15:04

I am with Eon Next and have fixed at, what will be, their variable rate in April. So, no cancellation fee and I get the price cap. Basically. I have no idea how I went from Eon last March (as a new customer) to Eon Next over last summer.

PukkaP · 08/03/2022 15:07

You need to look at the price per kWh and the daily standing charge, not the estimated monthly cost. Do you have those to hand?

MidnightMeltdown · 08/03/2022 16:39

I had a feeling that might happen. I got my v12 renewal quote yesterday and the first thing I did was check the news. I saw gas prices going through the roof, so made a snap decision to fix before the deal was pulled.

Whether it's worth it or not remains to be seen, but I like the certainty of knowing what my bills will be next winter.

oreo2020 · 08/03/2022 17:01

Me too, was offered v12 yesterday and after the initial shock overnight went online to fix it at v12... another shock, v12 is gone and replaced with more expensive v13z
Estimated energy bills gone from £1400 to £3000 (v12) to £3600 (v13).
I have fixed at v13 and now scared to boil a kettle for tea....

Holothane · 08/03/2022 17:23

Don’t do tariffs did it once never again I could see the unpaid debt growing the first bill I’d rather pay by direct debit pay as you go, via smart metre now.

Actually the condition is to switch if eligible so you can sign up to the rate even if not eligible ie. because your meter cannot be changed.

But everything is a tariff.. it just refers to the amount you pay per unit and standing charge
Harridan1981 · 08/03/2022 17:38

Is eon next part of eon? Fixed with them in October at what was V5 I think, they seem to changing almost daily at the moment.
