fuel to reach £2.00 per litre and possibly £2.50

This is being reported as oil prices rise and a ban on Russian oil is muted

Will this bring a surge for electric cars or will people adapt to other methods of transport?

Im getting a good 55mpg presently but thinking of just using car for long trips - anything over 10 miles and sticking to the bike for shorter journeys. Id rather save fuel for visiting family 100 miles away and even at £2.50 it would be £45 a return journey which is still cheaper than the train & tram at £64

I think people will seek other methods of transport. Electric cars are expensive to buy and with the energy costs rising they won’t be cheap to run.

TacoCats · 07/03/2022 09:32

Shell just purchased loads of oil from Russia, it won't get to that point as they will supplement until they are sorted. Let's not start panicking or encouraging panicking hey?

Londonnight · 07/03/2022 09:33

It's really worrying just how quick fuel is going up. I paid 150.9 on Friday At Tesco, it has gone up since then. Other garages in our area are far higher.
I need my car to get to and from work. Our public transport is really inadequate and the last bus I could possibly get leaves at 17.40. I don't finish work until 19.00. I also imagine that bus fares will increase as well due to rising costs.

some people have no choice but to drive, when I have dd with me (wheelchair user) we can hardly hop on the bus.

PeeAche · 07/03/2022 09:38

We have an electric car, but the cost of "filling it" has risen by about 30%. It will have risen by 50% by October. It's still much cheaper than standard fuel but our energy bill is crippling us at the moment.

There aren't any solutions. We have to tighten our belts a few more notches - tighter than we've ever known them. We'll journey less and eat less and heat less. 🤷🏻‍♀️

tigger1001 · 07/03/2022 09:42

A garage I drive past had diesel at 1.59 last week, now 1.70 this morning. That is a particularly expensive garage though. I think I was 1.55 when I got fuel at Tesco on Saturday.

QuebecBagnet · 07/03/2022 09:44

Diesel is between £1.65p and £1.75 yesterday. Up from £1.50 a few days ago.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 07/03/2022 09:54

I paid 165 for a litre of fuel. I am thankful that we don't have to travel to work.

etulosba · 07/03/2022 09:56

Without losing any revenue, the government could progressively lower the vat on fuel as the price rises if it was sufficiently interested in easing the burden.

Chipsahoy · 07/03/2022 10:00

Heating oil prices horrific too. We are just wearing layers and freezing instead!

Whatterywhat · 07/03/2022 10:00

It's more than that here. No choice of not paying as we need it to get to work
Something is going to have to give though

TheirTheyre · 07/03/2022 10:01

I’m disabled. If I want to go anywhere I can’t walk and need my car. I’m dreading this. It’s already sooo expensive for fuel. All my journeys are short and use up my fuel. It’s my only lifeline to independence. I wish I could walk or ride a bike instead.

ImAvingOops · 07/03/2022 10:04

I've just paid an electric bill of over £1000 for 3.5 months. There's no way I'd buy an electric car now.
It's scary, literally everything is going up!

Justkeeppedaling · 07/03/2022 10:06

Fuel here in N Wilts ranges from 147 (Sainsbury) to 169 (Swindon centre)

Madness!

deadlanguage · 07/03/2022 10:07

Potentially more people who can will use other forms of transport and that drop in demand will stabilise prices somewhat for those who are dependent on it. But I am very glad that I consciously chose to live somewhere with good public transport. We walk or get the bus around town, DP cycles to work or gets the bus if it’s icy, and I get the train.

@Samcro obviously I don’t know about your DD’s individual needs but buses are wheelchair accessible by law.

Lonelycrab · 07/03/2022 10:09

Shell just purchased loads of oil from Russia, it won't get to that point as they will supplement until they are sorted

But the other companies presumably haven’t bought cheap oil, so their prices will have to rise.

Shell will also raise its prices too, they’ll just make a shedload more profit from the situation. That’s my prediction.

Icemast · 07/03/2022 10:09

We did have 2 cars, but with everything rising I sold mine (for more than I paid for it 2 years ago as well which is crazy) and am fortunate enough that work is a short bus and train journey away. Taking into account the cost of having a car I barely drove as we take DHs at the weekend, even if their prices rise astronomically will still be cheaper overall. I keep thinking it surely has to reach a limit before either people rebel or it has to fall again but think that might be optimistic. Of course the offshoot is everything like food rising even more where the cost of transporting it rises.

vixeyann · 07/03/2022 10:10

This time last year is was just under £200 to fill my 500l home oil tank, I've just paid £529 for the same amount. It was £400 when I checked last week. We live rurally so are stuffed without a car. I'm lucky I have a little Smart car and only need to be in work 1 day a week, rest WFH but OH has a 35 min drive there every day in his diesel. I'm giving him my car most of the week to save money but it's confirmed we need to sell and move somewhere we are not so dependant on 2 cars. There is no public transport here and, despite us all being keen cyclists, the roads to the nearest town are all 60 roads and hugely hilly so it's not a viable option with an 8 year old. Going to be tough times :/

TabithaTittlemouse · 07/03/2022 10:11

@Chipsahoy

Same. We are wearing our thermals on days off.

We are really isolated where we live, no public transport unless you walk four miles for the bus and even then it’s a once a day bus. We need our cars. Dh car shares with someone in a neighbouring village and I work shifts which means only a few outings a week and I try to do my shopping on days that I’m working as it’s 22 miles to the nearest supermarket (in the same town as where I work).
We’ve always had to plan outings due to where we live and don’t do small trips.

PositiveLife · 07/03/2022 10:12

I paid £1.53 just over a week ago and £1.64 yesterday (most garages were £1.67).
I won't have much choice, there's no public transport suitable for getting me to work when I'm in the office and no suitable public transport to get to any of the activities I/kids do.
I can't swap to electric either as I've nowhere to charge a car.

Copenhagenoffice · 07/03/2022 10:15

Cannot imagine where this will end tbh

SellFridges · 07/03/2022 10:15

We have an electric car. It’s going to take monumental energy rises to get it to anything like the cost of diesel and petrol. It’s currently costing us about £5 to fill at home and £15 at a Tesla supercharger. To fill our non electric car is £70.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 07/03/2022 10:16

Yes we will go back to living like cavemen. I guess that will make some people happy though. I think there is some degree of businesses capitalising on these increases as there’s so much about it in the news. They are seeing £ signs and are all scrambling to increase their prices whether it’s warranted or not. What a time to be alive 🙄

Icemast · 07/03/2022 10:18

It's more expensive to buy or lease an electric car though, yeah sure you save money charging it vs filling up with petrol (well until the battery becomes less efficient after a few years), but looking at the overall cost it's still unlikely to be cheaper unless comparing to a top of the range brand new gas guzzler with all the mod cons.

Chakraleaf · 07/03/2022 10:20

I've just got my bike out the garage. I'm n9t confident on roads but I'm going to have to suck it up.
