fuel to reach £2.00 per litre and possibly £2.50

This is being reported as oil prices rise and a ban on Russian oil is muted

Will this bring a surge for electric cars or will people adapt to other methods of transport?

Im getting a good 55mpg presently but thinking of just using car for long trips - anything over 10 miles and sticking to the bike for shorter journeys. Id rather save fuel for visiting family 100 miles away and even at £2.50 it would be £45 a return journey which is still cheaper than the train & tram at £64

Unleaded is £1.69 and diesel £1.78 at my local station, drove past yesterday and was startled at how quickly it’s shot up.
Thankfully I don’t actually need my car for work because I live close enough to walk however I do tend to take it because I like coming home at lunchtime and maximising my time here. Might just walk now though, it’s not really worth it.

There are lots of articles on Google about fuel hitting £2 per litre and more about the increase in oil prices.

And even if there wasn't given fuel prices have risen sharply on the forecourt in the last week it's not exactly beyond reality that they could hit £2 per litre or more. One fuel station near where I work increased prices by 10p per litre in 24 hours - diesel there is £1.70

youwouldthink · 09/03/2022 07:50

We're in Ireland and it reached €2.00 per litre here in the last few days. Approx 60% of that is tax. Government set to announce a cut to the tax from midnight tonight as its just unsustainable for people with every other price rise going on!

It's been over £1.50/litre here since Christmas.

I'm self employed and have no choice but to drive - I can't physically do my job without a car so if fuel costs rise too much I'll just have to raise my prices. I can't see any other option, tbh.

The only other thing I may have to do is cut my service area as I won't be able to afford to take dogs who are 7-8 miles away on a regular basis Sad

I can't afford an electric vehicle and even if I could, we don't have off road parking and there are two public charging points to serve a town of 7,000 people. It's just not possible to switch yet.

Not sure why you are struggling so much with using google? There are plenty of reports on fuel hitting record high prices and for you not to be able to find one single report seems rather odd

No, I'm not sure why I'm having trouble either Confused

@kittensinthekitchen

Something wrong with your searches

Ah ok, no quotation marks then? I'm seeing some stuff now. Still nothing about £2.50 (other than the Express 'article' you linked) which was what I originally searched, based on the thread title.

Scary how high fuel might get, I'm solely reliant on my car to get out and about 😫

ivykaty44 · 09/03/2022 09:18

kittensinthekitchen I’m not really sure what your point is, petrol prices are increasing quite dramatically, the thread title is £2 and clearly it states possible £2.50 a simple google search brings up MSM reports on this, even one at £3

This thread is about the increase and how to combat the increases, Everyone will have different ideas of how this can be tackled and it will affect people in different ways

For some they maybe able to swap to other transport - some have said they can’t get ecar due to location. Ebike maybe a viable alternative, especially for someone doing lots of 2/3 mile trips ( those trips use lots of fuel so big savings)

I have no choice but to use my car so am going to have to suck up the cost and cut elsewhere

teraculum29 · 09/03/2022 09:31

we have 2 Shells about 3mile apart, on one diesel is 171.9p and the other one is 158.9p

ivykaty44 · 09/03/2022 10:17

teraculum29

I think you'll find that different people actually own the fuel stations and can set the price, just because they both sell the same product doesn't mean they have to set the same price

Same where I am. And a Tesco and Asda within a mile with fuel sitting about 10p lower. Who would choose to go to the expensive shell ones? Yet they have been there years so clearly someone does use them
Pedallleur · 09/03/2022 14:34

the £2.50 is an extreme but unless something changes it will reach that point eventually. Might be 6 months or 5 years but right now its heading towards £2

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 09/03/2022 14:37

Just drove past our local garage.

£1.65 for petrol and £1.79 for diesel. It's ridiculous.

RedRum27 · 09/03/2022 16:34

Filled up today for work after just buying enough yesterday to get home (I posted on this thread yesterday) and that was silly of me because from last night diesel at ASDA has gone up to 159.9 from 157.7!

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 09/03/2022 18:08

I filled up this morning and drove by the same station this afternoon. Prices have increased 2p per litre since then. Crazy!

Asdf12345 · 09/03/2022 18:15

I don’t think it will make much difference.

We were spending about £70 a week on petrol and diesel at £1.20 litre, even at £2.40 a litre that’s a £3500 increase over a year which makes a very small dent in changing two cars.

Add in 2500 litres of heating oil a year and again it’s painful but unless it lasts a few years doesn’t make changing cost effective.

ivykaty44 · 09/06/2022 11:51

Its still climbing in price, people in TikTok want protests

GingeryLemons · 09/06/2022 11:56

We are using the car less and less. Thankfully we live in a city with good public transport and I can also choose to cycle to work.

Car sitting on the drive and doing nothing is also expensive. May well get rid of it entirely if we have to.

ponkydonkey · 09/06/2022 12:01

It's currently 2.04 in my local garage this morning for diesel

Howshouldibehave · 09/06/2022 12:05

*Will this bring a surge for electric cars^

There is no way we could afford an electric car.

CombatBarbie · 09/06/2022 12:11

Local independent garage is at 1.93 this morning, the next local one was 1.79 last night (I'm talking diesel) but the manager then came on said it was being refuelled as he typed and the new prices would be on today...... Its getting very out of hand!! We live rurally and 17 miles from nearest petrol station so we always need at least 1/4 in car.

Don't get me started on oil for our hot water/heating, we paid £350 for 700 last spring. We've just paid £530 for 500 litres 😭😭😭

ivykaty44 · 09/06/2022 13:03
