If you had £2.5k for an engagement ring…

What would you choose?

My engagement ring has been sadly lost, but it is insured so I am hoping I can buy a replacement.

The style I had before was a princess cut with diamond shoulders, all very square but I loved it, although it probably isn’t what I would choose now. I love pear shaped stones, but someone close to me has one like that and I wouldn’t want to be seen as copying.

Would love some ideas if anyone has any! Would absolutely consider lab grown or vintage rings as I think you get more for the money.

I wanted Art Deco style ring but struggled to find exactly what I wanted. I ended up with this ring For the London Victorian Ring Company but changed the central stone. They have some lovely rings styles and were very happy to tailor the ring I wanted to my specification.

Id look for something beautiful in a second hand shop.

Also if you love pear shaped, get pear shaped. Life is too short to worry about whether someone thinks you're copying.

Mouthfulofquiz · 05/03/2022 21:34

Go vintage and not lab grown.

PartyPlan · 05/03/2022 21:36

@Squidinkk I get your point. I think I’ll have to see if the pear suits me. My fingers aren’t as slender as they used to be after pregnancy!

If you buy new then about 2k of that is profit / mark up...go second hand...get cash from the ins not a voucher....some persist in offering only those !

ShirleyPhallus · 05/03/2022 21:38

I wouldn’t get vintage as the settings are often loose / the metal has already had stress in it.

I would absolutely go for a lab diamond. Even diamond experts cannot tell what’s a lab diamond and what’s not, plus you’ve got the sustainability factors and ethical factors in.

I’d go to Hatton garden and try some stuff on, find some designs you like and then get one made up.

Avoid high street shops like the plague, you get terrible quality for the price and there is nothing unique about the ring

SilverHairedCat · 05/03/2022 21:39

Have a look at Chupi - lovely lab grown diamonds, interesting designs.

PartyPlan · 05/03/2022 21:42

@earsup thanks for that, I didn’t know they might offer a voucher! I have actually only lost the main diamond in the ring so I’m not sure what they will offer in this case. Didn’t want to complicate the OP.

@ShirleyPhallus. Good point on the stress of the rings if vintage. I want to avoid the same thing happening again.

If I had 2,5k spare I wouldn’t be spending it on a ring! Prob just me though…

@Nacknick that's not what the OP said though, is it?
Iamblossom · 05/03/2022 21:48

I tried this on today. Sorely tempted....

PartyPlan · 05/03/2022 21:49

@Nacknick I get what you’re saying, but we are in a good position financially and the ting is special to me so I want to replace it. I’m not seeing the insurance money as a “spare” £2.5k, it’s to replace what I’ve lost.

Go classic. Something you won't get tired of seeing. Round brilliant cut found in a jewellery shop that does pre loved, so you can get bigger, brighter and better for your money.
Win win win.

PathOfLeastResitance · 05/03/2022 21:50

I’d spend £500 on a vintage ring and spend the rest on a holiday. For me, I get the same excitement from fake diamonds as I do real ones but I can’t fake a holiday #campingisnotaholiday

helpmeihaveatoddler · 05/03/2022 21:50

Lab diamonds are just synthetic rubbish!!

PartyPlan · 05/03/2022 21:50

@Badgerloco I love that website, really easy to customise the stones and see. I think my favourite there is the round cut with the two round stones beside it.

If the diamond could be replaced in the ring, I’d do that (probably fake) I’d go to a local ring maker who made our wedding rings and he’d do a fab job and I would know I wasn’t being ripped off.

Have you got absolutely any idea what you’re talking about?
PartyPlan · 05/03/2022 21:53

@PathOfLeastResitance I don’t want to go too cheap though. My original ring was £2.5k and the diamond has fallen out and is lost. If I buy a cheap ring I would think the same thing might happen again.

Maybe I need to think about a yearly service and clean to check the settings.

I find this attitude so weird. A week’s holiday you will have absolutely nothing to show for at the end of it. A ring, you’ll have for life and will wear it on your hand every single day, seeing it and getting pleasure.

Will you still have the same pleasure from that week in Greece in 30 years? I suspect not

(Sorry, obviously very over invested in this thread!)

PartyPlan · 05/03/2022 21:54

@PathOfLeastResitance I hadn’t thought about just replacing the stone actually. Suppose I could but I was a bit excited about buying a whole new style as mine feels a bit dated.

I have a pear shaped trilogy and I love it more than lift itself. Makes me so happy every time I look at it.

You can't beat a pear IMO!
