If you had £2.5k for an engagement ring…

What would you choose?

My engagement ring has been sadly lost, but it is insured so I am hoping I can buy a replacement.

The style I had before was a princess cut with diamond shoulders, all very square but I loved it, although it probably isn’t what I would choose now. I love pear shaped stones, but someone close to me has one like that and I wouldn’t want to be seen as copying.

Would love some ideas if anyone has any! Would absolutely consider lab grown or vintage rings as I think you get more for the money.

I'd spend it on something else that isn't funding war, slavery and dictatorships. Sorry.

Grey antique market for vintage unique rings… so amazing.

It’s a lot less but I’m listing after this just now

I found a designer I loved and had a custom made ring so it’s one of a kind, there are lots of small jewellers out there who can make incredible things. Mine is a rubover style setting so super easy to wear and I never have to take it off. My sister has a gorgeous large teardrop diamond with more diamonds around it and matching wedding ring but it’s constantly catching on clothes and actually damaging the skin underneath. So my best advice would be think about what matters more, the wow or the comfort.

Annette32123 · 05/03/2022 23:04

Worth a trip to Hatton Garden - second hand rings there are excellent value.

Squidinkk · 05/03/2022 23:11

Here's another idea then. Can you find a jeweller who can use your current ring and any stones that are left in it and make it into a new ring that's more to your taste? I imagine you could get that done for less than £2500 and it would still be your ring.

FannyFifer · 05/03/2022 23:16

My engagement ring is a pear shaped diamond, it was originally in a yellow gold setting but the claws came loose so I got it reset in platinum & I love it even more.
Go for what u love.

justasking111 · 05/03/2022 23:17

I would go for an emerald cut if I had to replace. The pear cut is nice, the marquise cut my friend wears does sparkle well.

I would go to a jewellers try them on that will narrow down your search.

My engagement ring is antique three stone crossover. I've bought quite a bit of second hand over the years. I've had two pendants made from stones I liked as well

ClariceQuiff · 05/03/2022 23:19

I'd go for something vintage or antique in an intricate setting.

WaterBottle123 · 05/03/2022 23:23

I'd send half the insurance money to Ukrainians and spend the rest on an ethically sourced ring, so not a bloody diamond ffs

HelloDoris · 05/03/2022 23:28

Second hand all the way for me.. I buy a new piece at least once a year, currently rocking a 70's square cut big ass citrine as my engagement ring with a 70's citrine eternity ring and my wedding ring. My original engagement ring was a cheap 1920's 3 diamond (well diamond chip) crossover affair. I'm happy to change my engagement/ eternity ring (I do as the mood takes me), my wedding ring is my most important one and that will never change (unless I change husband's) 🤣.

Check out Segal's jewellers in Hull www.segalsjewellers.co.uk/ or the jewellery quarters in Birmingham or London for some excellent second hand pieces.

Lab diamonds are just synthetic rubbish!!
Bollocks. I have both natural and lab diamonds. They’re indistinguishable to the naked eye.
TippledPink · 05/03/2022 23:42

Go to a local ring maker- I had my engagement and wedding ring made by one. It was based on a design I saw in a shop but was platinum and made by a specialist. I love it! I have an aquamarine square stone in the middle and diamonds in the shoulders. Get something made!

earsup · 05/03/2022 23:43

well if just a lost stone then i guess they will direct you to their repair facility and replace it...unlikely to give you a cash payout....i used to work in hatton garden...mostly over prices stuff there now and all the same in the big shops....need to check out the small workshops up all the stairs etc....some years ago, a friend lost her ring and the insurance sent her an Argos voucher to buy something similar....she was not impressed....!!

Obira · 05/03/2022 23:44

77 Diamonds is the cheapest. Choose a setting with a halo to conceal the small size of the centre stone.

472NY · 05/03/2022 23:47

@PoshCoffeeOnly

That is gorgeous but as soon as you buy it, it’ll plummet in value.
BluebellsGreenbells · 05/03/2022 23:49

I currently love the bubble rings! So many designs, lots with square stone settings - have a look.

I would go to London Diamonds - will get a lot more for your money and they do bespoke both mined and lab grown

I've a number of items from there and also have hooked friends up for now about 6 engagement rings !
@ShirleyPhallus Hahah yes I do!! I'm a jeweller 🤣
Lab diamonds are not real 😆🤣🙈
They are real diamonds ... this is total twaddle to keep the inflated prices of mined diamonds high - which are not actually rare !

Hollytreenew · 06/03/2022 00:24

I would say having one designed and made for you is something so special and really fun. I agree with the poster who mentioned Harriet Kelshall as well. Have a look on her/their website, lots of galleries, there is one for pear cut diamond rings as well that you could use as inspiration. There are so many ways you could have a pear cut diamond that it doesn’t need to be anything like your friend’s one at all! (If you cared, which I don’t think you really need to.)

Ivyonafence · 06/03/2022 04:32

Oval cut is flattering on fingers and I think it will date less than a pear shaped diamond.

Agree, go second hand for better value and less damage to the earth

RedRobin100 · 06/03/2022 05:08

If I was replacing I’d get a really nice unique looking vintage I think
