I've seen loads.of amazing acts of bravery/kindness/humour in Twitter and wanted to share if anyone fancies it.

I've reported this thread.

Please think for a minute.

This is a war. It's not there to be funny, brave, or heartwarming.

How would you feel if someone was sitting at home giggling at stories about you surviving in a warzone, or treating the like a soap opera?

Namechangeforthis88 · 16/03/2022 22:18

Not sure anyone on this thread has been giggling about the war, personally I have been moved to tears several times by the courage shown by the people of Ukraine that I have seen on here. I think it's the modern equivalent of jokes and comic songs about Hitler. We're scared and overwhelmed and feel powerless to do anything for the people of Ukraine, and we're trying to make some sort of sense of what is happening.

I'm so sorry, I didn't realise you were in Kyiv, doing the modern equivalent of comic songs about Hitler.

I just thought you were someone in a perfectly safe country, participating in a thread about 'funny' stories from a place that's being bombed. I thought, wow, if you're not in Ukraine, how fucking dare you find it 'funny' that people are being killed? How dare you think it's amusing to make 'some sort of sense' of what's happening?

But, of course, I was wrong. I'm sure from your response you weren't being that crass. You couldn't possibly be outside Ukraine, could you?

Ijsbear · 16/03/2022 23:10

When the shit really hits the fan, people find humour in the darkest of places.

This thread has some small little moments of humour in the face of the most dangerous war to take place in 70 years.

There are LOT of threads taking the war very seriously and if you want I'll pm you links of the really heartbreaking stuff.

But unrelieved misery does nothing but drag people down.

When you're really facing hell, to keep going you have to appreciate the daffodils. I'm not joking, Im not making light of the utter misery there. But I don't want to pretend that there isn't extreme generosity in people opening their homes, their purses, their hearts and I'm going to celebrate the tiny bits of fun in the middle of this terrible, dangerous war.

lighterskies · 16/03/2022 23:11

@SarahAndQuack I actually think the Ukrainians are definitely trying to win the meme war as well as the one on the ground.

Taking comfort in stories of individual bravery, enjoying the tweets the Ukrainians themselves are putting out, like the tax office isn't belittling the trauma.

It is just a different way of celebrating bravery. The courage of librarians and accountants is still courage and should be celebrated.

No one on this thread is mocking anyone.
We are all supporting the courage of the small and quirky people, the non military.

Did you see on Twitter the conversation between Zelensky and the mayor of Melitopol

The joy on his face and their voices was lovely to observe

Oh and this is a nice thread. I do wish the thread police would scroll past. Or fuck off

Squiff70 · 16/03/2022 23:30

For the record, nobody here has said any aspect of this war is funny. It's heartbreaking and terrifying in equal measure and nobody on this thread has even insinuated otherwise.

We're all scared. We're all upset. We're all devastated for all those caught up in this brutal, senseless conflict.

BUT... this thread has sought to appreciate the sheer tenacity and quick-thinking Ukrainians, continually coming up with new ways to outsmart or just belittle the enemy.

When you hear stories of the local brewery printing labels for Molotov cocktails saying "Putin is a dickhead" or a lady who reported to have knocked down a Russian drone with a jar of gherkins, one has to smile. NOT because any of what they are suffering is in any way funny, but because Ukrainians are coming across as smart, forward-thinking, united and exceptionally tenacious in the face of the most extreme advisory.

Just my opinion.

Squiff70 · 16/03/2022 23:32

*adversity, not advisory. Bloody auto correct!

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 17/03/2022 07:50

I love this thread OP, thank you for brining all those little bursts of humour together.

@SarahAndQuack scroll on, you don’t get it.

ChimChimeny · 17/03/2022 09:55

Who knew my thread could be so controversial. I just wanted a place to share the things I've seen on Twitter or in the news which uplifted me a bit and hoped it might do the same for others. I've seen enough which makes me cry and feel hopeless

Keep going Chim. Seen you on the other threads, know you're a thoughtful and caring person.

You'll always get one person who tries to spoil things! But this thread, well, what Squiff said.

drinkgwineoutofamug · 17/03/2022 11:32

I've just read the story about the dog being carried over the board. She was old and tired.
The family were also asked to take another child to Poland.
It was heartbreaking but lovely at the same time how strangers have pulled together.

OP I have liked this thread, good to see the positives and how the Ukrainian people are fighting back with not just weapons , but also humour.

ChimChimeny · 17/03/2022 12:48

I feel the same, it's wonderful. I saw one post on Twitter of a normal man who was shot & killed helping people escape, he gave his bullet proof vest to a child he was carrying 😭 such bravery

I typed a longer post but wasn't sure it was helpful. My point was that people need hope. We are relatively safe, but we can feel fear and sadness for others as well as ourselves.

Alwayscheerful · 17/03/2022 18:19

Not really funny or heart warming but let's hope he has the measure of Putin.
