Family film suggestions

Hello!

We (me, DH and DS aged 7) are going to watch a family film this evening with a takeaway from the chip shop (happy days!) but we're not sure what film to go for. DS is a creature of habit and likes the same films over and over. It would be great to have something new tonight. Robots is great but we've seen it 3 or 4 times in the last fortnight! ConfusedGrin

Personally I would love an 80s classic like Indiana Jones or Flight of the Navigator but I think we're still a year or two away from the likes of those. DS is sensitive and scares quite easily. We're cautious of language as well.

Anyone watched something recently that they'd recommend? We're open to live action or animated and it doesn't have to be recent.

Thank you! Smile

We really liked Mitchells vs the Machines

MinecraftMuppet · 05/03/2022 15:54

Ah, haven't heard of that one, thank you, will look it up!

We watched Wonder with our 7 and 9 year old recently, which went down well.

We watch a fair few movies with DS aged 8. Some favourites are yes day, cheaper by the dozen 1 and 2, ET, wonder park and school of rock.

He found home alone and Casper too scary for different reasons.

YellowFlowersGreenStems · 05/03/2022 16:08

Ron's gone Wrong is good.

If you don't mind animated ones Inside Out, and the queens corgis are good. Would also second Ron's gone wrong.

We loved Big Hero 6 at that age

FixItUpChappie · 05/03/2022 16:21

We are movie buffs so at 7 our son had seen a zillion movies from every era....

A few gentler live action suggestions:

-Swiss Family Robinson (he love, loved this)
-Nim's Island
-Mary Poppins
-Pete's Dragon (original)
-ET
-The Secret Garden (1993)
-The Crimson Pirate (1952) - another massive hit
-A Little Princess (1993)
-Star Wars (original 3)
-Singing in the Rain
-Sound of Music

Bug hits in my house have included:

Mr Poppers Penguins
The Princess Bride
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Racing Stripes
Baby's Day Out
The Iron Giant
Babe

FixItUpChappie · 05/03/2022 16:27

Ooh yes to Bedknobs and Broomsticks - that's wonderful IMO

MinecraftMuppet · 05/03/2022 16:27

Some great suggestions - thank you all! E.T. would be great but probably too much for DS. We do have a list now to work through over the next few weeks! Grin

Fury vengeance- We (me & DH!) rewatched this a couple of weeks ago. It still makes us laugh.

Flushed away - for animated action.

Back to the Future?
Aw, this would have been awesome!!! Think it's just a bit out of reach for DS. Sad So many great films we can't wait to watch with him (The Goonies is one of my favourites!) but there's just a few too many scary/tense moments or child-unfriendly language.

High School Musical 1 and 2

Arghhconfused · 05/03/2022 16:47

Sing 2 on amazon prime. That's what we're watching tonight

BreakingUpWithMyPhone · 05/03/2022 16:48

We've sometimes found that older films we thought would be okay for DS aren't really when we've watched them again.

Recently, we've enjoyed the Mitchells
Versus the Machines, Up, both Mary Poppins, The greatest showman, Ron's gone wrong.

I hope you find lots of great films to watch.

My eldest struggles with “scary” films and we’ve found the best way to deal with this is to explain the lot before hand and mention anything in particular that might bother him. He’s usually ok if he knows what’s coming but sometimes he likes to step out for the worst bits. Common sense media is a good site for film synopses that include bits that children may struggle with.

karmakameleon · 05/03/2022 16:50

Lot = plot

AudTheDeepMinded · 05/03/2022 16:51

I've just given in and watched Encanto with mine. It was totally bearable and the kids loved it. Old favourites are 'Up', any Madagascar ones and any of the Ice Age ones. Also Bolt and The Incredibles.

Yes, exactly what we've found! DH and I aren't puritanical but we're quite cautious in what DS sees, particularly as he gets upset easily. I also worry about what messages he might pick up. We love The Incredibles but I feel a bit uncomfortable at the family constantly screaming at each other. We did chat about it afterwards with him though which is the other way of looking at it!

We use Common Sense Media too to flag up content but we've run out of free reviews this month! Grin Might actually just sign up.

Tad the explorer is the animated kids version of Indiana Jones. It's a great film

Rodion · 05/03/2022 20:48

The Shawn the Sheep Movie isn't too scary at all and is very funny. There's some suspense and action but it's a great all-rounder.

Needhelp101 · 05/03/2022 20:50

Definitely both Shaun the sheep films and both Paddington films!
