Anyone had the pleasure of Kidney stones?

I woke up this morning, had a wee and got back into bed. Suddenly had excruciating pain in my side. I've never had pain like it and I've had 4 babies!
I was then sick half a dozen times.
Rang 111 who got GP to phone. He thinks maybe kidney stones or infection but wants to send urine to the lab.
Surely he should give me antibiotics and then re assess when urine has been tested?
The pain comes in spasms but has calmed down a bit now after strong painkillers.
I can honestly say I've never felt so ill in my life!

Shock I wouldn't wish this pain on anyone! Will I know if I've passed a Stone? I feel dreadful

Antibiotics will do nothing for kidney stones. I imagine if your urine test is clear they will give you a CT scan. Worst pain I've ever had including giving birth.

I agree its the worst pain!
I've had paracetamol and naproxen which is helping but I just feel so ill, that's why I'm wondering if it's a kidney infection.

Had a possible one, used naproxen for the pain

crimesagainstwine · 04/03/2022 18:12

DH had them last year - he was in agony and crying (not like him at all). I couldn't get him into car to see GP and in the end the GP dialled an ambulance - he was put on gas and air and morphine and overnight stay (plus CT) until the largest had passed. If you are still in pain OP I would consider NHS111 and getting to A&E.

Lookingforatimeslip · 04/03/2022 18:15

I’ve had them several times. Once when I was pregnant. They’re vile. Some of mine have passed naturally, one I had when pregnant they had to laser it, the last time they did Lithotripsy for it to break it down. Really depends how big it is. You probably need to go to hospital so they can scan it. They’ll look at how big it is. Anti biótics will do nothing for it.

changingstages · 04/03/2022 18:17

it's AWFUL. I ended up with a UTI as well afterwards, which I think might be quite common? I was scanned and they found quite a few on both sides but one particularly big one on each side. The pain did stop once I'd passed those but I had nagging little pains for weeks afterwards in the same place on one side, which apparently can be caused by the stone scratching/bruising.

I was given morphine at A&E and the relief was so immense. They took it really seriously and gave me all the drugs I wanted, including some v exciting codeine suppositories, so I'd highly recommend getting to hospital if it keeps going. It's an awful pain.

1990s · 04/03/2022 18:23

Two lots of morphine and it stopped the pain eventually. Awful! One tiny stone.

Do go to hospital if the pain is too much.

BreakfastClub80 · 04/03/2022 18:24

I had one and had to go to A&E for morphine after I vomited up oral painkillers. I had a CT scan and it took a while to find it but I was kept in overnight for more morphine and the drip plus anti emetics as I was constantly being sick. They told me it was tiny but the pain may have been caused when it blocked the urinary tract on its way out.

I assume the stone passed but didn’t notice it (despite using a sieve for a couple of weeks on medical advice Grin!

It was incredibly painful Flowers

@lockdownhasbrokenme
Did it make you feel really ill? How long did the pain last? TIA

lockdownhasbrokenme · 04/03/2022 19:09

Was on and off all morning in waves, probably about 10- 15mins of doubling up in agony pain the rest nagging stabby pain and feeling shivery and like I had a uti so would have assumed it was just that apart from I kept doubling over.
Hospital found blood in my urine but scan didn't find a stone but showed a dilated tube so they assumed I had one.
For me agonising but bearable, possibly because I was meant to be getting my covid jab and wanted to save my daily allowance of painkillers because I was very achy after the first jab but I got asked by strangers if I was okay so I must have looked bad

MinglingFlamingo · 04/03/2022 20:23

Me!!!

I have a very outing story involving it colliding with a holiday so emergency services being called to the airport to take me to hospital

I was put on antibiotics, painkiller, and a drug to pass them I think. It was 15 years ago and it's all a bit of a hazey experience

I was given morphine and a suppository at the hospital

They are really shit BippityBoppityBloop. Hope you feel better soon

I didn't know when i passed the stone. It could still be inside me somewhere. Guess it depends on how big it is

Men due to their anatomy don't get rid of the stone. I think it's that way round

TwiggletLover · 04/03/2022 21:00

I've had them more than once. Waiting times on the NHS for a scan are very long. If you go to A&e they will do it for you there. They will also give you some pain killers which actually work. Morphine is useless, you want the ones that you have to put up your bum!
Worst pain I've ever had, including childbirth

BippityBoppityBloop · 05/03/2022 10:39

Thanks all, sorry to all those have suffered.
Today the pain is keeping at bay with regular painkillers. I feel so nauseous tho, can't even face a cup of tea.

I raise your kidney stone to a stag horn - 2 actually, one in each kidney. They had to come out by lithotripsy.

The pain is unrelenting. Take whatever the strongest pain killer is you can access (obviously, safe doses only). Drink as much fluid as you can take - helps flush the fecker out.

Bagelsandbrie · 05/03/2022 11:08

If you are in severe pain in your side / back and you don’t know what’s causing it you need to go to A and E. It could be anything from a kidney infection to appendicitis.

Thinkingblonde · 05/03/2022 11:43

Me, it got stuck in the pipe from the kidney to the bladder. It started off with a really sharp pain in my left side brought me to my knees. Began to feel shivery with flu like symptoms, began vomiting then became delirious, I was sent to A&E by the out of hours clinic, X-rays showed a large stone had got stuck, my body was absorbing the toxins from the urine build up which lead to uraemia (Blood poisoning). I had an operation to push the stone back into my kidney as it was too big to pass naturally. A stent was put in at the same time to allow urine to pass. Two rounds of lithotripsy, the first round just broke it in two, the second round shattered it.
I got infections from the stent due to the failed lithotripsy.
in hospital for five days on IV antibiotics.

Thinkingblonde · 05/03/2022 11:47

The pain in spasms could be the stone trying pass through the tube from kidney to bladder.
The OOH doctor dipped my urine sample as as matter of course, it didn’t show infection but it had blood in it.

zukiecat · 05/03/2022 11:53

I have a history of kidney stones, the pain is like nothing anyone could ever think of. It is excruciating!

I had another one last summer, two and a half centimetres, it was removed by keyhole surgery, which wasn't pleasant, I stayed in hospital for a few days after removal.

Since the beginning of the year I have been having more pain in the same area, not excruciating yet, but have had XRays to see what's going on, and as part of the aftercare of surgery.

I hope you feel better soon.

BippityBoppityBloop · 05/03/2022 14:16

@Thinkingblonde that sounds horrendous Flowers
@SlatternIsMyMiddleName wtf! Even the name stag horn sounds painful!

I've slept lots today, pleased to say the pain is just a bearable dull ache now so I wonder if the stone has passed?
Still feel really nauseous thoSad

You should definitely get checked out to see what is causing the pain.

I had a suspected kidney stone when I was still in the hospital after having DS. Urine was clear but obviously had blood in it as I'd just given birth. CT scan showed no kidney stones but a lot of poop in my gut right where the pain was worst. I was so embarrassed! The pain was unreal though, like nothing I've ever experienced. The only thing that took it away when it was at it's worst was pethidine. It was weird because I'd actually been going to the loo quite a lot. Anyway, they gave me some laxatives or something and the pain wasn't so bad after that. I kept taking laxatives at home and in a couple of weeks it was totally gone. Very strange though.

BippityBoppityBloop · 06/03/2022 11:16

So today I feel better than yesterday. I Jo longer feel sick, I feel "fragile" and my side is a dull ache.
I am weeing normally.
I have eaten tea and toast. Should I assume that the stone has passed? If it was a stone.
