It’s dd’s 9th birthday at the end of this month and one of her favourite activities is reading.

She loves reading things that are magic/supernatural and also things that have a “danger” plot as she described.

She has the full collection of Roald Dhal books, various Isadora Moon, Mirabelle and Victoria Stitch books. She also has loads of rainbow fairy’s and animal books too.

In my basket so far is the second Victoria Stitch, and The Accidental Witch.

What sort of books do your 9 year olds enjoy reading?

My Dd loves the warrior cat books. A warning that cats do die though and the first one was a bit emotional for Dd. But she got over it and raced through the next 15 books it so.

Soubriquet · 03/03/2022 12:56

Fantastic. Thank you. I will check those all out

My DDs adored Malory Towers and St. Clare’s, and The Naughtiest Girl series. For slightly more modern boarding school stories, they enjoyed Trebizon. One of my DDs also liked Noel Streatfeild.

My youngest DD absolutely loved A Little Princess. I suggested The Secret Garden… she managed the first few pages, before telling me the book was terrifying. When I read it again I saw what she meant. The cholera scenes in India are truly nightmarish.

Some Malorie Blackman is good - Pig Heart Boy in particular. But don’t do what I did and let her read the Naughts and Crosses sequence at 9. After hearing my eldest enthuse about it, I read it. It is not particularly primary school appropriate.

The Creakers, The Danger Gang, The Christmasaurus and other books by Tom Fletcher. To be a Cat and others by Matt Haig. The Boy at the Back. Of the Class. Currently enjoying The Super Secret Diary of Holly Hopkinson.

Have a look at
Rainbow Grey
The school for good and evil
Skullduggery Pleasent
Midnight for Charlie Bone.

All absolutly excellent 9-12 fantasy/danger books.

LateToTheParty · 03/03/2022 13:09

Was going to suggest Isadora Moon and Mirabelle which my almost 9 year old also loves. As she's already a fan she might like the Kitty books by Paula Harrison. Similar format - paperback chapter books with gorgeous illustrations. The Kitty books are orange, black and white and we have the first 8, and there's another 2 being published this year.

Murder most unladylike was a huge hit here. There are lots of them. Think the author is Robin Stevens?

She has Rainbow Grey too and loved that.

Thank you all. I’ve managed to update my basket to plenty of new books
