Low/no carb breakfast ideas that aren't eggs! Please [smile]

Hi,

After losing a lot of my hair, I assumed it was down to my low ferritin levels, but actually after really stepping back and looking at my diet, it's way too carb heavy and really not enough protein and not enough protein can also cause hair loss apparently.

Usual diet consists of, toast for breakfast, sandwich or pasta (wholewheat usually) for lunch and dinner would normally include potatoes, rice, noodles etc.

If I could eat eggs for breakfast every day I would, but I don't think that's massively healthy. I have eggs 3 or 4 times a week anyway, so think that's enough really.

Thing is, they really do fill me up, so I need to find some protein rich alternatives, which are actually healthy and keep me going. I'm generally a very hungry person Grin

Any ideas?

TIA

I have this shake which is poteinaceous, hydrating, easy and nice!
250ml unsweetened almond milk, 30g low sugar protein powder, 1 level tspn of unsweetened cocoa powder. All whizzed up in blender.
Another one is 2-3tbspn of plain Greek yogurt, 15 or 30g protein powder, maybe the cocoa powder + flakes almonds and some frozen berries.
Both so delicious and healthy and proteinaceous.

Greek yoghurt with nuts and fruit
Cottage cheese or Skyr again with nuts and fruit
Muesli with lots of nuts
Peanut butter on your toast
Did I mention nuts Grin

More protein will help with the hunger as well as the hair!

For lunch: lentils are a good source of protein as is cheese, meat obviously.
Are you at home for lunch, if so you could batch cook things like lentil soup, casseroles, chilli, curries and have for a quick and easy lunch that has more protein. Or take them to work if you have a microwave there.

KoalafiedAwesome · 03/03/2022 10:52

There's an entire board on low carb with lots of ideas... look at the boot camp threads.

There's plenty though.

Worldgonecrazy · 03/03/2022 10:52

Eggs are healthy. The idea that they are not is very out of date.

If you want to make them more interesting then coconut flour pancakes are an easy make.

Greek yoghurt with berries and nuts is also yummy.

Your diet is very carb heavy so you may need to retrain your brain.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 03/03/2022 11:14

You might find you are less hungry if you reduce the carbs - I have.
These are filling
55g Almond flour
10g Almond butter
30g unflavoured protein powder
1 egg
Milk to make a batter (I use plant milks because I don’t like dairy)

This makes a stack of quite dense pancakes that you can have with mushrooms and tomatoes or with berries and yogurt. They freeze well too.

These all sound delicious but not low/no carb unfortunately.

emmathedilemma · 03/03/2022 11:48

quorn sausages, baked beans, tomatoes and mushrooms. Make your own baked beans if you want to reduce the amount of sugar in them - you can make a huge batch and freeze them. Add eggs if you're feeling risky ;)
Avocado, smoked salmon, spinach & tomatoes.

TomAllenWife · 03/03/2022 11:50

I love the Kvarg protein yoghurts
Eggs - you could have omelette, pancakes, dippy eggs & wholemeal soldiers or rye
Salmon & avocado

minipie · 03/03/2022 12:25

@TidyDancer OP said high protein, not low or no carb.

Okeydoky · 03/03/2022 12:29

Porridge is surprisingly high in protein if that's your major concern, although not low carb.

DogandMog · 03/03/2022 12:31

Minipie, she literally said low or no carb in the title

"Low/no carb breakfast ideas that aren't eggs! Please Smile"

anyway, full fat Greek yoghurt with a swirl of double cream whipped in and frozen berries. Sausages, bacon, grilled pork chop or any kind of meat, left over dinner... doesn't have to be typically breakfast food.

TidyDancer · 03/03/2022 12:31

Yes she did, it's in the title. Like I said, your options look delicious but they aren't low carb. If she's going for high protein instead of low carb then that's fine, but if she's going for both then it's not.

Sorry, that was to @minipie.

BIWI · 03/03/2022 12:32

First, there's not a problem with eating eggs. If you want to eat them every day, you can Smile

Second, breakfast doesn't have to entail 'special' breakfast-only food - that's an idea that stems from Mr Kellogg and his ilk.

So - leftovers from the night before are perfect!

Otherwise, if you're looking to up the protein, why not full fat Greek yoghurt, with some nuts? Possibly a few berries as well?

Or a cooked breakfast? Along with those eggs, some bacon and mushrooms.

A continental breakfast of sliced cooked meats and cheese?

Lots of things!

minipie · 03/03/2022 12:39

Ah yes true TidyDancer! Hadn’t spotted that, sorry. Just reading the OP it seemed like high protein was the priority.

Notbluepeter · 03/03/2022 12:40

Eggs are brilliant! Almost a complete meal on their own (other than vitamin c and k).
Even so, this guy has loads of low carb ideas cavemanketo.com/category/food/breakfast/

JodieFoster1 · 03/03/2022 12:44

Smoked mackerel fillet (cheap, very filling), tinned sardines, portobello mushrooms and spinach leaves.

Brightandyoung · 03/03/2022 13:03

I have a smoothie made of peanut butter, cocoa powder, a banana and some soya milk. It’s really thick and yummy. Then I put some fruit and flaxseeds and/or almonds on top. If I eat that at 8am it fills me up until about 11.30am.

Another one is full fat Greek yoghurt (must be full fat to fill you up) with almonds, a chopped banana and some maple syrup.

I alternate between those and eggs.

That sounds really yummy however is it low carb? I'm looking for more breakfast ideas myself that are low or no carb, a quick smoothie like this sounds ideal.
Notcontent · 03/03/2022 13:20

How about tofu, to add more variety?

I definitely think it’s a good idea to have more protein to your diet, but the bad news is it seems unlikely that your hair loss is connected to that unless you were really malnourished.

TabithaHazel · 03/03/2022 14:01

I actually think it's fine to have an egg everyday, but alternatives could be smoked salmon/mackerel with avocado; full fat yoghurt with low carb granola (I like the Raw Gorilla one); bacon with mushrooms and a tablespoon of baked beans.

BIWI · 03/03/2022 14:05

Banana is the least appropriate fruit if you're looking for a low carb solution @Brightandyoung!

tigerbear · 03/03/2022 14:09

I have slices of vegan chorizo and sliced peppered ‘beef’, made from pea protein.
Sounds disgusting, but I’m addicted to one callef ‘Beast Meat’ 😀. You can get it in Tesco.
