Low/no carb breakfast ideas that aren't eggs! Please [smile]

Hi,

After losing a lot of my hair, I assumed it was down to my low ferritin levels, but actually after really stepping back and looking at my diet, it's way too carb heavy and really not enough protein and not enough protein can also cause hair loss apparently.

Usual diet consists of, toast for breakfast, sandwich or pasta (wholewheat usually) for lunch and dinner would normally include potatoes, rice, noodles etc.

If I could eat eggs for breakfast every day I would, but I don't think that's massively healthy. I have eggs 3 or 4 times a week anyway, so think that's enough really.

Thing is, they really do fill me up, so I need to find some protein rich alternatives, which are actually healthy and keep me going. I'm generally a very hungry person Grin

Any ideas?

TIA

I have been getting the Carbzone tomato wraps from Ocado, only 4g carbs each and filling them with cheese and ham, making quesiladas, usually for lunch. Also Fatt bars, yummy and low in carbs, usually between 1 and 3 carbs. I also have started to have blackberries in alpro plain coconut yoghurt.

Thanks for all your suggestions so far! Lots to be getting on with 👍

I'm really not sure about having eggs every day. Most doctors I've spoken to have said that too many is bad for cholesterol, but maybe guidance has changed now.

I quite like the sound of scrambled tofu, but suspect you need to add a lot of seasoning for it to taste of anything.

I'm definitely more of a savoury person in the morning otherwise I'd have the natural yogurt with berries and nuts etc, but I just never enjoy it. I do like Alpen muesli though. The sugar free one. Is that considered low carb? Obviously not great for protein though.

Yes, that is very old advice about eggs @FizzyThinking!

And I'm afraid that Alpen is not low carb - even the no added sugar one is 63g carbs per 100g, which is really high.

If you go and have a look at the Bootcamp recipe threads, in the vegetarian thread, there's a Rose Elliott recipe for low carb granola which might suit you.

@BIWI, I'm clearly absolutely clueless then! Grin

I'm right at the start of this, so I guess it will be a bit trial and error for a while.

You're on a hiding to nowt with cereals or any of the so called low sugar ones to be honest. Chia seed pudding is good, I stick cacao powder in. You can get hovis nimble bread and a warburtons one that are around 9 carbs a slice, good with bacon, avocado, ham, tomatoes, etc

Kippers breakfast of champions!

We have just started keto following the fast 800 for 3 weeks but this chap is really knowledgeable and references scientific studies. He seems to completely understand nutrition and the effects of food stuffs on the body.

This whole video explains the myth around eggs being unhealthy, but I have marked it 4 minutes in where he specifically talks about cholesterol and how we only get 25% from food the rest is made in our bodies etc. It should alleviate your worries

I've been at it for years and still finding my feet. I didn't realise I could eat food with complex carbs, they take longer to digest, keep you fuller, and don't have an immediate impact on sugar levels. I love the Merchant Gourmet packs of grains with vegetables and fish.

ThackeryBinks · 03/03/2022 14:34

I'd just like to say OP I'm not sure if it's HRT or the keto diet but my hair is suddenly growing again!

Marmelace · 03/03/2022 14:35

Be careful to not go to low with carbs when first starting. I did and ended up in intensive care with ketoacidosis. As with most things I went in head first.

Lidl do a nice protein granola, have some of that sprinkled on Greek yoghurt.
Jumbo porridge oats with berries and chia seeds.

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/03/2022 14:49

High protein pancakes

Tablespoon each milk powder, buckwheat/whole meal flour, oatbran plus a generous pinch of bicarb of soda. Put in an blender with one egg an two tablespoons milk, and then into a pan with a couple sprays of olive oil.

Eat with Greek yogurt fruit and seeds.

I make up the dry ingredients in a screw top jar so pretty quick.

Otherwise porridge with yogurt, or Bircher with yogurt.

BIWI · 03/03/2022 14:50

Unfortunately that granola or the porridge oats aren't low carb though

Micheal Moseleys 800 fast website has some good ideas. I definitely recommend the cheese and chive muffins. They are almond flour, cheese, pine nuts and milk and are absolutely delicious and incredibly filling.

Mushrooms fried in butter and woth full fat Philadelphia stirred in are amazing. Especially with a bit of salmon or kippers. Kippers on their own are good too.

Leftovers from dinner

Crustless quiche (although thats egg based)

ODFOx · 03/03/2022 15:03

Poached finnan haddock is a breakfast treat I love on high days and holidays.
You can poach an egg in the smoky water at the same time for a double protein meal.

Westfacing · 03/03/2022 15:05

A few of my breakfasts:

Avocado, small cubes of feta, chilli flakes on crispbread

Avocado & smoked salmon

Full fat yoghurt, defrosted frozen cherries/mango, sprinkle of granola (20g)

Slice of cheddar & tomato on crispbread, zapped in the microwave few seconds until molten

Dragonfly ready-marinated tofu (very tasty) sauteed in olive oil with tomatoes

Shakshuka, prepare base ahead and just add eggs in the morning

nearlyspringyay · 03/03/2022 15:15

So many things here aren't low carb. If you really want low carb you need to eat high fat.

If you just want to up your protein that's a different thing altogether.

The egg thing is an old myth.

I eat Greek yogurt, maybe some decent ham and a slice of cheese. Tbh since properly doing LC/ HF I don't eat breakfast anyway and protein is naturally higher if you eat this way. @BIWI knows it all!

BIWI · 03/03/2022 15:16

I wish that were true @nearlyspringyay Grin

Sausages!

Worldgonecrazy · 03/03/2022 15:28

If you can’t get on with a ketogenic diet, switching to low glycaemic load foods is another option, which allows higher carb intake from complex carbs such as beans and pulses, sourdough granary etc.

I don’t believe there is a ‘one size fits all’ healthy diet. My partner loves keto, I love low glycaemic.

BeyondPurpleTulips · 03/03/2022 15:33

Kippers/pilchards/tuna mayo/smoked salmon/prawn mayo, and avocado

Diabetic and I've just started with this, by accident actually. My sugars were consistently hitting 20mmol on the low carb, since changing tact they are more in the 6mmol to 11mmol at the highest. Losing weight slowly but consistently and I feel more active.
