School Leavers hoodies.

How much did you pay for your DC's school leavers hoodie? Did your DS or DD wear them much after they had left school?

Dd got one leaving primary. Still wears it now in year 9.

itsnotdeep · 02/03/2022 16:35

They all wear their y11 hoodies loads.

They got various things for leaving primary, that none of them ever wore again.

BiddyPop · 02/03/2022 16:37

DD's was about €25, but she wore hers a lot - the last week of school, a lot over the miserable summer holidays and also quite a lot for going to sailing training both that and the following winter. That second winter, she also used it a lot for weekend boat work in scouts.

She definitely got the use out of it.

She also got similar hoodies for 2 different big sailing events (world champs) and an international hockey tournament that have all been very well used afterwards as well.

She got a TY one (transition year - 4th year of secondary after initial state exams (junior very) last year) this year - which is getting a lot of use as they all tend to wear that over their tracksuit bottom for daily school rather than formal shirt and skirt uniform. (DH paid so I have no idea how much - it's been one long shelling out of money year).

Ours were a voluntary £15 contribution; the school made it clear that no child would not recieve one whether parents could pay or not. In the end the PTA raised enough to cover all the hoodies so those who had paid were refunded. They had all the year group's first names on the back.
My son hardly wore his, they seem more popular with girls.

caringcarer · 02/03/2022 16:43

£25 and son wore it twice in last week of school. Then it went off into charity bag. Apparently not cool to wear after that. I would not bother again.

RatherBeRiding · 02/03/2022 16:45

Can't remember how much DS's was - he never wore it and it languished in a drawer till he moved out. It's good quality and nice and roomy so I wear it for mucking out the horses! Had absolutely loads of wear out of it and still going strong.

I can't remember. DD has never worn hers. A bit of a waste of money IMO.

Mumdiva99 · 02/03/2022 16:49

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Our Primary they get them first thing after the October half term and can wear them as uniform throughout the rest of Y6.
This. And cost about £17.
TheCanyon · 02/03/2022 16:50

Our schools are either £20.50 or £21.50 depending on size. They get given them the day before p7 starts and they wear them everyday during the school year. We used to get a free one from the PTA but they didn't do it this year.

You see a lot of p7 leavers wearing them over the summer holidays and then they're obviously just chucked to the back of the wardrobe.

ReflectiveJournal · 02/03/2022 16:51

3 x DC wore them loads. In fact DD2 wore her Y11 one the other day and she is in 2nd Year at uni.

balalake · 02/03/2022 16:52

Those who have them as uniform for a period at least are not supporting fast fashion in all but name. The number who stop wearing them after a short period does not surprise me.

VladsPants · 02/03/2022 16:52

£20 and never worn by either of mine. And I don’t see others wearing them at all around here.

Peterbear · 02/03/2022 17:00

A pointless American custom that we've adopted it seems. Just more crap for landfill. They only wear then once or twice

SquirrelFan · 02/03/2022 17:01

My oldest is still wearing his Yr11 hoodie, and he's in his 2nd year of uni. My youngest (now y13) wears hers as lounge wear /pyjamas. They're very good quality - think they were... 25 - 30?

ButterflyBitch · 02/03/2022 17:05

My son wore his loads. I’ve just realised I haven’t seen it for a while and asked him where it is and he doesn’t know. So that’s a bummer. I think he’d have grown out of it now as he’s got quite a bit taller since last July.

AdoptedBumpkin · 02/03/2022 17:08

The thing of putting everyone's names on is potentially problematic to me. If a child had been badly bullied, they wouldn't want a hoodie with the bully's name on it.

HopefulProcrastinator · 02/03/2022 17:09

End of primary hoodie was £20 including a ticket to the leaving disco (entirely self funded - school don't arrange one). The hoodie is still worn frequently although it has now been relegated to 'house' clothes because it's faded and a bit tighter than her normal ones. I knew she'd wear it often though so had no hesitation buying one.

Her sister will wear hers often too so will happily buy that when the time rolls around.

Tulips21 · 02/03/2022 17:12

About £20 each I think.
Dd still wears hers- 3 yrs on ( Its loungewear around house)
Ds wore his until grown out of 18months later

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 02/03/2022 17:14

Year 6 and it was £20 he wears it every day

PinkSyCo · 02/03/2022 17:19

£25 for a personalised one that got worn for a few weeks. Ridiculous waste of money.

londonmummy1966 · 02/03/2022 17:30

Both my DC have worn their leavers hoodies a lot - they also swap them with their boyfriends.

reluctantbrit · 02/03/2022 17:34

End of primary school - £16 I think.

We bought it totally oversized and they got it mid-May after the SATS and were allowed to wear it instead of school jumpers/cardigans.

Most primary schools here now give out the jumpers after Christmas or even October half-term as parents complain about the cost vs wearing ratio.

She is now in Y10 and I finally got her to put it in her memory box, it was getting so small, it was a crop-top hoody now. I think she mainly wore it around the house, outside only for the first year or so.

Ladyrattles · 02/03/2022 18:04

About £25. Eldest DD wore hers everywhere for about a year. Middle kiddo loved her school hoodie and also wore it everywhere. She is still wearing her 6th form hoodie at uni, so she got loads of use out of them. Youngest kiddo DS has only ever worn his a couple of times. So I think it depends on the child how much they wear them. It's a nice memento but can be pricey for some families in these hard times

And this is why capitalism is killing the planet.
