Germany city break

Where would you go for a few nights in Germany? Preferably somewhere fairly picturesque with attractive old buildings, market square etc but also selection of restaurants and shops. Ideally quite compact and easy to walk round and/or with excellent public transport or taxis, due to mobility issues. Years ago (before mobility issues!) I've visited and loved Prague, Bruges, Tallin etc.

Heidelberg or Munich

garlictwist · 02/03/2022 14:22

I came on to say Heidelberg. I was a student there - it's beautiful.

sweetbellyhigh · 02/03/2022 14:24

Dresden

Twizbe · 02/03/2022 14:34

Baden baden. Beautiful town and the hot baths are amazing.

StrongerOrWeaker · 02/03/2022 14:50

There is Regensburg near Munich too

poorbuthappy · 02/03/2022 14:51

Freiburg

NiLunNiLautre · 02/03/2022 15:26

I've been to Lahr, Heidelberg and Koln, and found them all beautiful.

Ylvamoon · 02/03/2022 15:35

Came here to say Munich.... I have also been to Freiburg - lovely and compact but don't think there is enough for a few days. Same for Baden- Baden although you can easily visit Rastatt (?) and Karsruhe from there.

How about Cologne pr Mainz?

Hbh17 · 02/03/2022 16:01

Konstanz. Gorgeous lakeside city & lovely thermal baths. Close to Swiss border, so nearest airport is Zurich.

BasiliskStare · 02/03/2022 16:12

Berlin for me - quite big but the central bit is very easy to walk around and has nice places

traintraveller · 02/03/2022 16:16

Freiburg

CockingASnook · 02/03/2022 16:17

Leipzig or Dresden, especially if you enjoyed Tallinn.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 02/03/2022 16:20

Nuremberg
Pretty, well restored old town. Fab transport around town and further afield (to be fair that's the case for most of Germany). Got its own airport with really fast and easy metro connection to town.

OutdoorType · 02/03/2022 16:26

Thanks all. Lots of suggestions to investigate!

Berlin - its amazing. So much history and things to see. Incredible restaurants and bars etc. I really loved it and was very very impressed.

balalake · 02/03/2022 16:53

If you have never been to Germany before, Berlin. Hope wherever you choose you have a lovely time.

Normandy144 · 02/03/2022 17:34

Munich. We had a great weekend there about 6 years ago. Relaxed city, plenty to see and do but nothing like the list of must-dos say if you were in Rome for example and we liked it all the better for that. Meant you good take your time in the beer gardens and there was no rush.

cazzyg · 02/03/2022 17:43

Munich I’ve traveled a fair bit round Germany and a Munich is my favourite city.

Twizbe · 02/03/2022 17:56

Nuremberg was another favourite. They have a beer festival in sept which is way better (smaller and more informal) than Oktoberfest.

We had a great few days there

Shiningpath · 02/03/2022 18:03

Check your city will be open on a Sunday. Even in the height of summer a lot closes on a Sunday in Munich.

shreddednips · 02/03/2022 18:05

Koln. I absolutely love it, been a few times.

Hoppinggreen · 02/03/2022 18:07

DH is German and we try to go a couple of times a year.
We love Freiburg, Nuremberg and Munich best

Pandapooks · 02/03/2022 18:07

Cologne is a lovely city. Berlin is really interesting with lots to visit - especially fascinating if you like history.
I also quite like Hamburg, it has a different feel to many other German cities. Spent a year in Germany as part of my degree. Would love to go back and take the DC
