Germany city break

Where would you go for a few nights in Germany? Preferably somewhere fairly picturesque with attractive old buildings, market square etc but also selection of restaurants and shops. Ideally quite compact and easy to walk round and/or with excellent public transport or taxis, due to mobility issues. Years ago (before mobility issues!) I've visited and loved Prague, Bruges, Tallin etc.

Dresden - it's also surrounded by pretty towns (I think they have an Italian feel but are more orderly). Honestly I would recommend Berlin the most as it is so interesting but it's not that pretty (although there are very pretty parts)

Bamberg , picturesque medieval town in Franconia .So so pretty especially in summer.Small enough to walk around but lots to see.

I love Bamberg, I have an aunt and cousins there, but it's very hilly and cobbly (is that a word?) if mobility is an issue.

Berlin for history and stuff to do
Koeln for a bit of everything. It’s smaller, easy to walk around

Spudina · 02/03/2022 18:24

Frankfurt is pretty. Gothic style buildings and a lovely river to sail down.

confusedofengland · 02/03/2022 19:24

Freiburg. Definitely enough there for a long weekend, but if you want more you have the Black Forest, Basel in Switzerland & Mulhouse in France within a very short journey.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/03/2022 19:30

Berlin and Hamburg both well worth a visit. Berlin isn't pretty but it is amazing; Hamburg has pretty bits.

timtam23 · 02/03/2022 20:04

I have been to Freiburg and Munich and would recommend them both, agree with PP who said check what is open on Sundays though! There seem to be a lot more Sunday closures in Germany compared to what we are used to in the UK

harrumphs · 02/03/2022 20:15

Berlin is an amazing place to spend a few days. If it's your first time in Germany, definitely go there.

BasiliskStare · 02/03/2022 20:31

There is a very pretty bit of berlin with coloured cottage types houses restaurants etc ( is it the nikolai quarter ? ) - I think have been rebuilt but lovely - near the river . The Gendarmenmarkt is lovely and nice restaurants and cafes and btw a beautiful chocolate shop - also a nice hotel & convenenient for seeing most things

I would go Berlin but - that said - others have lovely ideas.

Also if you are not much into walking the Trabant safaris looked lovely to me - no idea how much they cost but when we go again I will do one of those - they look very much of a laugh.

Anyway - wherever you go - I wish you all well

Lübeck or Garmisch-Partenkirchen

MorrisZapp · 02/03/2022 20:38

Is Koln the German name for Cologne? And are there any direct flights there from Scotland?

I've noticed my favourite clothes are German made. Is Cologne/Koln good for shopping? Both mainstream and boutique?

SufferingJet · 02/03/2022 20:39

Hamburg for shopping

QuantumHypothesis · 02/03/2022 20:40

@HoldingTheDoor

Munich.
Another vote for Munich. Beautiful city, lots to see and do. None expensive restaurants. Lovely people. Berlin was great too..
ParsleySageRosemary · 02/03/2022 21:20

Lubeck!

Egghead68 · 02/03/2022 21:21

Another one for Munich

FinallyHere · 02/03/2022 21:23

How do you feel about marzipan?

If you are a fan, then Lübeck would be a knock out choice.

Lübeck https://g.co/kgs/faypHU

The Mecca of marzipan

https://www.niederegger.de/cafe-niederegger/

Just some of the different kinds of marzipan for sale

https://www.niederegger.de/cafe-niederegger/marzipanerie/

The centre of Lübeck is beautiful, several d buildings for walks round the centre.

I'd eat in the Restaurant as part of the town hall https://www.ratskeller-zu-luebeck.de/speisen-und-getraenke/

Non marzipan lovers might be best staying in Hamburg, for tours of the harbour and amazing nightlife.

Ormally · 02/03/2022 22:55

Bremen, and visit Hamburg. I wasn't hopeful for Hamburg despite knowing the south more, but loved it.

Ormally · 02/03/2022 22:55

PS, the marzipan scale is accurate.

WildImaginings · 02/03/2022 22:56

Freiburg

NiLunNiLautre · 02/03/2022 23:00

Is Koln the German name for Cologne?

Yes Smile

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 03/03/2022 00:10

Koblenz is lovely. Small medieval city, but plenty of things to see & do, easy to get around, and it is very much the type of city based around the historic centre. It's not really on the agenda of many tourists, so it doesn't get packed out and the people there are really friendly. It's not a razzamatazz type place at all, but if you want the type of city where people obviously live & work quite naturally, it's ideal Smile
