Easy World Book Day costumes for kid with sensory issues

So DS's nursery as usual have been last bloody minute in communication (it's my only complaint about the place) and announced they are doing dress up for World Book Day tomorrow.

I'm at work so not much time to make something (I normally make his Halloween costumes for reasons below) and dislike buying something just for one days wear.

DS is potentially autistic (currently being assessed) and has major sensory issues/delayed speech.

We have a lovely dragon costume that could serve as Zog's classmate but I know he wont wear it due to his issues.

So I need something that is simple, comfortable and can be easily knocked together - and importantly wont result in a meltdown 😩.

We don't even have any character t shirts.

Any ideas?

Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs.

He wears what he’s comfortable with but takes a bucket with some dinosaurs in it.

Pyjamas would be the easiest option. Either that or he can be Harry in normal clothes but with a bucket for his dinosaurs.

DoNotTouchTheWater · 02/03/2022 10:22

If you happen to have a red and white striped T-shirt, he could be Oliver Jeffers’ boy.

But honestly, a bucket of dinosaurs sidesteps all the sensory issues nicely.

Ramona the Pest, just a dress and a cardigan, short socks and shoes and a tuna sandwich for lunch.

TroysMammy · 02/03/2022 10:28

Sorry misread DS but for anyone with a DD.

Goldenbunny · 02/03/2022 10:34

DS went to nursery in his uniform I did buy him a character t-shirt but when I put it on he went and got me his uniform. Most dress up days he goes in his uniform. Uniform = nursery to him anything else and he thinks he's going somewhere else and it causes a meltdown.

In which case, he’s dressed as one of the many school child characters in uniform out there. 🤣

Well done him on making such an excellent choice.

Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs.

I thought of this but don't trust nursery to get all the ibis back to us - which would no doubt cause another meltdown

Talk to them about that in advance. He’s being assessed for ASD, they should know that they need to make sure his dinosaur bucket remains intact.

DoNotTouchTheWater · 02/03/2022 10:37

Or send just the bucket. The dinosaurs are busy playing.

We don't have uniforms at our nursery.

I wouldn't be impressed at a nursery who couldn't keep track of something like that to be honest. He just needs to keep it where his bag is kept or on a high shelf he wouldn't necessarily be playing with it during the day.

DoNotTouchTheWater · 02/03/2022 10:37

In fact, the dinosaurs are characters in their own right. So harry and the bucket is just the costume.

brokengoalposts · 02/03/2022 10:51

Ds once went as the wimpy kid, black shorts, white t shirt and a black back pack.

SatinHeart · 02/03/2022 11:01

My DS has (probably sensory) issues with fancy dress costumes so will be going in his Stick Man pjs tomorrow. Sainsbury's are usually a good place to get some. At least pjs get plenty more wear.

There must be other book characters that wear ordinary pjs but my mind has gone blank currently!

RocketAndAFuckingMelon · 02/03/2022 11:06

Plain babygro / onesie (if he's young enough) - the Avocado Baby

One of the children from Stick Man - send him with a stick

Ordinary clothes - a Muggle

A vest and trousers, or nightie and sandals - the Smartest Giant in Town (add patches if you have time)

Red and white striped t-shirt and jeans - Charlie Cook's Favourite Book

Blue and white striped t-shirt - Tim from Topsy and Tim

Dungarees and a hard hat (he only needs to carry it, not wear it) - Bob the Builder

Yellow t-shirt and shorts - Christopher Robin

Pegasussnail · 02/03/2022 11:11

That's such short notice. I keep a few wigs here incase of these sorts of things (pick them up in charity shops etc )

Has he a skeleton outfit left from Halloween (funnybones)
Harry idea sounds perfect though

Comefromaway · 02/03/2022 11:13

Ds used to have massive meltdowns on non uniform days.

He was, however totally obsessed with Thomas the tank and he used to put his Thomas tabard on over the top of his nursery uniform.

firstimemamma · 02/03/2022 11:14

Our son really didn't want to dress up (they are doing dressing up all week) so we are just not doing it and sending him in in his normal clothes.

Bickles · 02/03/2022 11:19

Nicky from the Mog books wears normal clothes if you have a toy cat or egg for him to carry.

Hospedia · 02/03/2022 11:58

Send in wearing whatever he is comfortable in and shall he's a muggle from Harry Potter. This is what my autistic DS is doing because he hates dressing up.

thedot · 02/03/2022 12:42

Vashti, from The Dot. Send him in with a paintbrush and palette, or a cheap box of watercolours.
