Easy World Book Day costumes for kid with sensory issues

So DS's nursery as usual have been last bloody minute in communication (it's my only complaint about the place) and announced they are doing dress up for World Book Day tomorrow.

I'm at work so not much time to make something (I normally make his Halloween costumes for reasons below) and dislike buying something just for one days wear.

DS is potentially autistic (currently being assessed) and has major sensory issues/delayed speech.

We have a lovely dragon costume that could serve as Zog's classmate but I know he wont wear it due to his issues.

So I need something that is simple, comfortable and can be easily knocked together - and importantly wont result in a meltdown 😩.

We don't even have any character t shirts.

Any ideas?

My DD is going in dungarees and wellies. She is the scarecrow from Dingle Dangle Scarecrow. If I could convince her to keep a hat on it would be perfect but snowballs in hell have more chance.

Print out a picture of the bucket of dinos

Have a flick through the picture books he likes and pick any character that wears normal clothes.

My son is being a dragon by wearing dark coloured clothes and carrying a dragon toy (if he wants to on the day)

Lots of very simple ideas here including reusing halloween costumes and characters that wear their own clothes. www.mumsnet.com/articles/world-book-day-costume-ideas. Hope it helps.

Dress him all in one colour, give him a sword and say he's a ninja? Or stripey t shirt and he's a pirate.

Charlie from Charlie and Lola- just write Charlie on a long sleeved t shirt ?

We ended up doing dungarees and a white shirt and spiking his hair. He carried a wee bucket and was Oor Wullie.

Sounds great op

I hope you can suggest to the nursery this is the last time that they do dressing up.

I doubt they are slow in communication if you are last minute in any money owed to them.

Ops son had the chance to join in in a way that suited him (low level costume) and the kids who love it got the chance to go all out. Why does that mean it should be banned for all future years?

Yes places need to accommodate kids needs, there shouldn't be pressure and there shouldn't be prescriptive costumes but I don't see why some children not enjoying it means no one should be allowed to do it.

The dressing up is most definitely not the issue. I'm glad they do fun things like this.

It's just that as an education setting they should have a calendar of these things and give more notice.

With more notice I can easily work around any issues like I did at Halloween, for example.

The issue I have is the poor communication- whether for "trivial" things like this or bigger things like the dates of the Christmas holiday (which should have been in a welcome pack when he started but I never got said pack - still haven't actually)
