Frightening and dramatic thread titles on the home page

Is anybody else getting a bit fed up of seeing them?

They're really unnerving me (unlike the long running very informative ones which are sensible and do not provoke such anxiety)

I have MH problems and have done more than my share of panicking this week. I'm done with it.

I've opened those threads and clicked 'hide thread' but they're still showing for me on Trending.

Is there any way of me hiding them from trending or should I just avoid MN for a while?

OP posts:
Samcro · 01/03/2022 16:16

there are about 3 threads already talking about this.

dollymuchymuchness · 01/03/2022 16:16

Yes, it is a problem on here. Have you spoken to Mumsnet HQ? I haven't found a way of hiding trending, although you can hide individual comments.

TellMeMoreHellebore · 01/03/2022 16:18

hq gave some advice on a now deleted thread....see gp if anxious to a point you panic and avoid internet

MsIreneWinters · 01/03/2022 16:20

Absolutely agree. I am quite close to the edge currently and have hidden everything. Seeing them on the home page is not helpful. It's a shame as I find non terrifying threads a useful distraction!

XenoBitch · 01/03/2022 16:25

Same here.

Clicking on them (even if it is to hide them) is what has them ending up in trending. I am on desktop, so have to click to hide too (and end up seeing the OP).

There is a thread about this in Site Stuff. Might be worth commenting there and make your feelings known about it.

I hope it gets sorted soon.

I haven't seen them. I'm trying to avoid anything triggering. If somebody could be kind enough to link then I'll go there and ask MN to remove this one.

Let MN know you want a specific board.

Thank you I'll find the thread in site stuff.

I'm sorry if this has been done to the death. I didn't realise anyone had posted the same.

I'm on beta blockers for anxiety. There's not much else the GP can do. I'm on a waiting list for CBT. I'm recently postnatal so feeling a little vulnerable. I enjoy MN and don't particularly want to stop using it because of a few bonkers threads as there's alot of great stuff here.

Sorry OP, but I think everyone has mental health issues. I’m on Citalopram and have been for 12 years. Having said that I want to keep up to date on what’s happening in Ukraine. The war boards are filled with speculation and don’t tend to be helpful but the BBC coverage is well done and compassionate.

Everyone? I don't and never have.

Sorry to hear you are struggling OP. Some of the more dramatic posts have got me eye rolling. Not sending kids to school, building bunkers. Hmm In the real world most of us are living as normal and not getting our knickers in a twist, take what you read here with a pinch of salt.

I have absolutely no issue with the sensible discussion.

It's the alarming thread titles appearing on Trending that you can't avoid EG "are we going to be nuked, would you even want to survive being nuked"

I've been following the sensible threads on the Ukraine/Russia situation myself. AFAICS nobody on them has been blowing their top freaking out about being nuked and freaking out others in the process.

As you said, alot of people on MN have mental health problems. Opening the home page and being met with 'nukes' is incredibly distressing for many.

Thank you WaxOn

Indeed!

I was in a right state the other day after some of the things I saw people saying, for example that I should count myself lucky I live in London as I would be dead immediately and wouldn't know anything about it. I was petrified. My OH had to talk me down.

We went to get our shopping and as I looked around I didn't see any of that panic, everybody was just going about their business, people laughing and joking. It put things into perspective.

For goodness sake, this is happening to the people in Ukraine, not you! You have every right to not click on a thread, to hide it, to unfollow. You cannot use fragile MH as a way of shutting down incredibly important conversations.

There have been some incredibly valuable posts signposting to charities and donation sites etc as well as general discussion, so you are being very unreasonable expecting people not to post on your account.

FudgeSundae · 01/03/2022 16:47

Totally agree OP. I refuse to panic. I feel like we’ve been told to panic for years now - Brexit, covid and now this. I am horrified at the plight of Ukraine and very sympathetic but I refuse to panic about what might happen to me because the answer is probably not much and it takes away from the Ukrainians who have actual problems.

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/03/2022 16:51

Plenty of the people posting those threads also have anxiety or other mental health issues and they’re looking for support. That’s okay. It’s massive news, of course people want to talk about it. It’s being covered everywhere.

If you’re struggling then restrict yourself to specific boards, avoid trending or active, or get off MN for a while and do whatever usually makes you feel better.

I’m sorry you’re having a hard time but censorship isn’t the answer.

This!

I'm getting thoroughly bored now of people posting as if they either live in Ukraine, or can hear tanks rolling down their street.

The war is not here. Can we all stop going on as if it is?

I've seen multiple people on LinkedIn saying that if you're not posting about Ukraine you should say nothing - presumably because that's literally all that's happening in the entire world right now. People still have jobs and lives and bills to pay. The world turns.

Where did the OP say she wanted to shut down conversations? She specifically referred to dramatic titles on the home page and has gone on to say she has followed some of the sensible threads on the topic. So where are you getting that idea from?

Jesus, there is no need to be so insensitive. Using the people of Ukraine to dismiss her mental health is low. Let people talk about things that are bothering them and jog on.

Grinling · 01/03/2022 16:56

Look, OP, the people writing those threads are the same ones ‘prepping’ since 2011, worrying about housework, and having panic attacks in March about table plans for Christmas. They find each on here and froth one another up onto the mass anxiety barricades. Pity them, roll your eyes and don’t take a blind bit of notice.

TheUsualShitshow · 01/03/2022 17:03

It's awful behaviour, a desperate attempt to insert their boring lives into the middle of a world event which is actually killing people.

OP, you're right to focus on the behaviour of people in real life, and not the hysterical way some people behave when they're anonymous.

I think this is some sound advice here that I could also do with following sometimes 😅

But seriously OP I get what you're saying, you definitely are not the only one who struggles with the dramatic anxiety inducing shit that gets posted sometimes.
There are some really good level headed posters on here who are happy to share their insights but when you struggle with anxiety it can be hard to ignore the hysterical stuff.

During the beginning of the pandemic I had to completely cut myself off from Mumsnet and all social media as I became totally overwhelmed. It helped hugely and the Covid related anxiety disappeared entirely.

OP is on about frightening and dramatic thread titles, not general discussion.

'The Invasion is ongoing..' threads are informative and calm. No one has an issue with them. Stuff I have seen lately such as asking if Russia can send all their nukes at once, and about building bunkers.... it is like standing in the street with an 'end is nigh' sandwich board.

Yeah, probably the same ones who were "shaking and crying" in April 2020 when someone dared to pop to the shop for non essential items. Utter drama llamas.

What are you talking about?

I haven't said people can't post. I have absolutely no issue with people talking about what's going on. As I said, I have read some of the rational and sensible threads and found them to be a good resource for balanced discussion.

I wanted to know whether there's anything I can do to stop things like "we're going to be nuked" and other inflammatory panic inducing titles - appearing on the Trending board, for me.

I have hidden those threads, that's the point. They're still coming up on the first page of trending.

For god sake why do people have to jump down others throat?!

I have never tried to say it's "all about me" how rude.
