World Book Day - how do I nominate the principal for sainthood?

Amongst the mass of people having to create all manner of insane costumes for World Book Day, we got a message from school saying "For World Book Day, all children will make a bookmark in school. They can also bring in their favourite book to show to the rest of the class".

Would it be unreasonable to run to school and hug the Principal?

That is so lovely and so refreshing!

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Star Star Star Star Star Star

Not unreasonable at all. If World Book Day claims to be about giving access to books to children who otherwise wouldn’t have them, schools really need to bear that in mind when they decide how to celebrate it.
It’s funny how the choice of one word makes such a difference. Children ‘can’ bring their favourite book (if they wish too) is so much gentler on families than ‘should’.

liquidrevolution · 01/03/2022 09:43

Brilliant! I wish all schools will do this. Currently skiving off work to make a Hilda costume Hmm Blush

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 01/03/2022 09:44

Well, yeah, this is what it's supposed to be like!

I can't believe some parents are having to dress their kids up as examples of Oxford commas or adjective clauses. I think some places are just taking the piss now.

I'm all for a nationwide protest against it 😃

KindlyKanga · 01/03/2022 09:48

Yay! This is what it should be about. The actual books!

EcoCustard · 01/03/2022 09:51

That is a refreshing change. I hope it catches on and spreads to other schools. Dressing up isn’t compulsory in DC’s school but those that do will be taking part in a parade to guess the character Hmm. With all that is going on it seems a little crass this year.

NobbyButtons · 01/03/2022 10:13

That's brilliant. I wish our school would follow suit!

Blurp · 01/03/2022 10:18

Honestly, it's such a relief! The school is brilliant in so many small ways, and this is just another example!

DS insists he doesn't have a favourite book and wants to take all of them :D

Meh, I don't understand the stress about book day. But then I am the parent who just sends their kid in their own clothes with a book. They've won the competition every year for bringing a book in.

Koalaslippers · 01/03/2022 10:22

My DC's school are having a pyjama day and encouraging them to curl up with a book. Sounds perfect to me.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 01/03/2022 10:23

I used to keep mine off for the day.

Rainbowqueeen · 01/03/2022 10:25

Sounds lovely.

My kids school has had the older kids pair up with the junior kids and take turns at reading to each other and having parents come in over the course of the week to read to the kids. (This was a few years ago pre-covid)
It’s nice to see the day being about reading rather than dressing up.

WeDontShutUpAboutBruno · 01/03/2022 10:26

My kids school sent a message saying they are having a dress down day, they said they can dress as a character if they wish, but they don't want parents to feel book day is a financial burden. It was a major relief I can tell you.

purplemunkey · 01/03/2022 10:28

I wish our school was doing this. Last year they went in in pyjamas/onesies for a bedtime story theme. I thought that was good as no one needs to buy anything new/make an outfit. This year they’ve done the dreaded come in as your favourite character. I didn’t have anything to hand at home and have begrudgingly ordered something. DD loves reading, but this day feels more about fancy dress than anything else. And I just know there will be lots of Elsas and Spiderman (Spidermen?) running about in the day - what’s the point in that?

MyNewAdventures · 01/03/2022 10:28

Our school just do a book swap... much better than dressing up!

Eyerollerhighroller · 01/03/2022 10:33

Unfortunately, our school (state primary) has decided that:
Kids to come dressed as favourite character/book/object from a book. They are to pay £1 for this.

They have also decided that the kids in the school council will be providing cakes to sell. Those cakes are being sold for £1 each at break time.

The children can also bring in a book they no longer read/want and put it in a book sale, also taking place that day. Books being sold for between 20p and £1.

Sigh

lollipoprainbow · 01/03/2022 10:36

Our school is letting them wear pyjamas and take a book yay !!!

Twizbe · 01/03/2022 10:38

That's great.

My DD's preschool is letting the kids come in their pjs. They should bring their favourite book for a 'bedtime story'.

So much easier than figuring out a costume for them.

Meanwhile I'm on a hunt for facepaints for DS' Asterix costume.

ThanksItHasPockets · 01/03/2022 10:40

Yes, I think the tide has turned on dressing-up days. Selfishly I am pleased as my older child who loves dressing up is now too old and my youngest wouldn't dress up for all the sweets in the land. His school are doing a PJ day.

Blurp · 01/03/2022 11:00

I think it's bonkers having dress up days where the kids just wear costumes they've bought. If they were making them at least it would involve some creativity, but even then it usually ends up being the mum doing it.

How brilliantly in the spirit of World Book Day

DD is delighted that she will get to go as Paddington in her final year at primary school. She’s been hanging on to my old duffle coat (from when I was her age) for a couple of years.

44PumpLane · 01/03/2022 11:15

OP that sounds perfect!!! Our Primary is doing dress up as a character and link it to school values......I imagine there will be a lot of Elsas and Spiderman!!

I'm not adverse to the kids dressing up in what they already have but I have forced my two to choose an actual character from a book....this has spectacularly backfired though as one of them has chosen Superworm!!!

haveyouevereverfeltlikethis · 01/03/2022 12:28

Ours was doing a book sale - bring an old book in, buy a new one for 50p/£1, aiming to raise money for school to reinvest.

Until some parents kicked off that it wasn't fair they couldn't dress up, let kids be kids, where is the FUN etc. Now we have a book sale and dress up to sort 😩
These parents are currently feeling very smug that they have saved all the Fun for the poor children. The rest of us are quietly seething
