No unleaded in any of my 3 local stations. Is this just panic buying, or are there actual shortages?

@Urbanisation

No one has ever Kept Calm And Carried On. The phrase itself was never even used in a proper campaign, likely because the government realised how unrealistic it was. When the poster was unearthed a couple of decades ago it became part of the mythology that UK citizens tell themselves about WWII.
To be fair, that's not true. My Mum remembers it well from WW2.
BarbaraofSeville · 01/03/2022 10:00

@chocolateisavegetable

My theory is that there were more people than normal trying to get fuel on Friday because it was payday. Then other drivers spotted that the garages were busy and assumed it was panic-buying, and they then decided they ought to fill up before there were shortages. Then people started posting about shortages on FB and MN ...
Probably this. Self perpetuating.

I filled up last Wednesday or Thursday because the light had been on a couple of days. I was in the same position during the last panic buy and got in by luck rather than judgement just before there were massive queues and have now been lucky twice that my fill it up when it's empty and forget about it for a month strategy that's served me fine for decades hasn't bitten me on the arse.

20 p increase is probably a bit of an exaggeration though. You can see most of that my just swapping from supermarket petrol to a big brand in a 'premium' location eg dual carriageway/less local competition.

Samcro · 01/03/2022 10:02

just got diesel with no problems. must admit to putting 40 in instead of 30 as the prices will go up.

I saw a post on a local Facebook group saying Tesco had run out of diesel last Friday. Didn't think much of it. Went out on Saturday and there were queues at 2 petrol stations. Ran low on Monday and the first petrol station had a massive queue. I was rather panicked then as I was down to nothing on my gauge. Went to the next nearest and there was no queue, so filled up. Went past later and it was shut but the other 2 I went past had no queue. I do think people see a queue and panic and join the queue!

I guess technically I panic bought, as I did panic (as I was running very low) and bought some. Grin

AuntieStella · 01/03/2022 10:06

Fine here.

And I'm not bothered this time round, because DH is not currently having to do the long drives for work at the moment, and everything is within the range of our hybrid on electricity.

We do have a couple of longer trips planned for the Easter hood, but that's a few weeks away, and even if it goes silly now there's time for it to normalise again by then.

SoupDragon · 01/03/2022 10:10

I filled up last week when they said the price of oil had rocketed. I needed to fill up anyway but it spurred me to do it. This should last me ages as I don't drive much (I last filled up just before Christmas!)

AdobeWanKenobi · 01/03/2022 10:26

@BlondeWidow

For god's sake!!!! You're making it worse by posting threads like this!

Thanks a lot! 👍🏻

For God's sake!!! Do you not read the media where it's been reported for the last two days? No local groups on Facebook or Next door where it's also talked about frequently? Do you not have friends and family who have discussed it?

But if you'd rather blame a thread on Mumsnet then that's fine.

Urbanisation · 01/03/2022 10:28

@BlondeWidow then your mum misremembers.

Draculahhh · 01/03/2022 10:31

No shortage where I am, I did fill my car up yesterday but that was to take full advantage of the 7p off voucher at Morrisons Grin

User7497521 · 01/03/2022 10:32

I always fill my tank, I'm not going to go to the garage more than I need, who just puts a small bit in each time unless you can't afford it

User7497521 · 01/03/2022 10:33

I last filled up in October just before the shortages, I'm hardly going to pop to the garage each month for a drip or two

Leftbutcameback · 01/03/2022 10:42

Panic buying, but mitigated by the cost is what's been reported. IIRC last time they said it was only a 5% increase in demand that caused the whole thing (that the extent of "topping up")

Madmog · 01/03/2022 10:55

We had a weekend away and didn't top up before going. Passed a garage near where we stayed yesterday and luckily no problem topping up. It was only 148.9p per litre, so had a good buy as got back to find our local garage charging 158.9!, on Friday it was 154.9. Didn't see any queues on our return anywhere.

FaceLikeASlappedAss · 01/03/2022 10:59

Fine here. I do need to go today passed station this morning but had forgot card. I always fill up on the 1st.

BashfulClam · 01/03/2022 11:01

There were massive queues on Friday. We had to fill up as petrol light was on.

LindaEllen · 01/03/2022 11:12

It's probably more that they're trying to buy before the price rises.. I get that. If it rises much I will really be struggling, along with the energy bill rise.

Laiste · 01/03/2022 13:21

Oh god not again.
sigh

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 01/03/2022 13:23

All fine here. Filled mine up this morning

FaceLikeASlappedAss · 01/03/2022 14:59

Fine here. Went to Costco.
But went past tesco, texaco, shell and sainsburys doing school run. No ques. No closed signs.

Atmywitsend29 · 01/03/2022 15:03

No shortages here, but petrol is 152.9 now Hmm

No she doesn't! My grandmother spoke of it too! There's several newspapers my grandmother kept from the war and it's there in black & white! Every single issue "Keep Calm & Carry On, Britain"

SprinkledGlitter · 02/03/2022 10:39

london.ac.uk/about-us/history-university-london/story-behind-keep-calm-and-carry

The ‘Keep Calm’ design was never officially issued and only a very small number of originals have survived to the present day.
2.45 million posters displaying it were printed, only to be pulped and recycled in 1940 to help the British government deal with a serious paper shortage.
It wasn’t until a copy was discovered in a bookshop in Northumberland in 2000, and reproductions of it began to be sold a year later, that its fame was established

Billandben444 · 02/03/2022 10:48

So it was a newspaper headline and not a poster and her mum doesn't misremember.

newtb · 07/03/2022 19:22

I'm in the Limousin in France, so not comparable, but a friend told me there are shortages of both petrol and diesel. I film up at a quarter but was just above. It cost 1€949/l and kearly a year ago it was edging down towards 1€. Never got there. It was 25 centimes more than thé last time I filled up, 2 or 3 weeks ago.

It hurt, even more so that they drop thé price at week-ends and it was too cold to go out, so I didn't, and paid through the nose today.

SprinkledGlitter · 07/03/2022 19:27

Well, there is no way of knowing whether her mum or grandmother misremember without seeing the newspapers for ourselves. It's possible she does. It's also possible she doesn't.
