Have you ever injured your tailbone?

I was ice skating with my children on Wednesday and had a bad fall. I turned too quickly to get to my DD and went straight down on my arse. I actually heard someone say, “Oooooh,” so it clearly looked as bad as it felt.

It’s still very painful. Sitting hurts, obviously, but now when I’m walking there’s a constant dull pain and lots of other movements hurt, too. Google tells me that, whether it’s a bruise or a fracture, there isn’t much to be done. Is it worth seeing a doctor, or do I just carry on and anticipate it sorting itself out eventually?

That’s really helpful advice, Susu. I think I’ll try to go to urgent care tomorrow while my daughter is at nursery.

I felt quite shaky and jarred when it happened, but had all three children with me so just tried to brush it off. My hand is badly bruised and I initially thought that, if anything was broken it would be that, but it was better the next day.

Yes and it really hurt

MalfunctioningRobot · 28/02/2022 17:27

Sorry OP, I’ve done this recently, it’s really not a nice injury. Mine was very painful for about 3 weeks. I had 2 weeks worth of high strength painkillers off the dr, didn’t go to A&E, they just did an online consultation with me. I bought a cushion to use in the car which helped a bit too. I couldn’t sit in the car without excruciating pain for a few weeks, couldn’t drive because the constant moving to change gears was too painful.

It’s been about 6 weeks now and it’s 99% better, I get a little bit of pain if I’ve been sitting down for a while and then go to stand up, but other than that it’s been fine.

I adore winter, and all its sports. Living in Canada, it helps.
Going sledding with the family, super excited!
First big , deep snow of the winter.
First run down the big hill, the biggest in the area.
Except some shit had built a ramp I didn't see, halfway down the hill.
I only cleared about 18" but when I landed, it was right on my tailbone, which broke.
I was then stuck, two thirds of the way down the hill (sled was now at the bottom) unable to move.
Still had to figure out how to get the kids home (DH was away) from the hill, find someone to drive my car back (couldn't sit at all) and get to the doctor myself.
As a result, I missed pretty much all the skating, skiing, and snowboarding for the rest of the season too.

I broke mine (fell off a horse)

hurt a lot. especially going to the toilet.
sitting on a piles cushion helped.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/02/2022 17:47

I bruised my coccyx (I think, I didn't get it checked out) by missing a step and falling into a sit position and catching my coccyx on the edge of a step. A memory foam cushion with a cutaway section at the back really helps if you have to sit in order to work. It might also help with driving if you need to do that.

TheVolturi · 28/02/2022 17:51

I fell off my horse and landed right on my arse on rocky ground when I was about 20. It was sheer agony for weeks. I had to stand up at work at my desk, I just could not sit down. I am 40 now and do have other back issues but not directly related to that injury. I took regular ibuprofen and paracetamol until it eased.

THEDEACON · 28/02/2022 18:15

Yes horrific pain not healed for 2 years get a donut cushion do pelvic floor exercise and see a physio

BadHairDayExpert · 28/02/2022 18:17

Hurts like buggery - could not drive. Painkillers, donut cushion, 2-3 weeks recovery but usually fixes itself (have done it three times)

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 28/02/2022 19:30

Oh you poor thing! It's like being tortured.
I injured mine whilst rushing about trying to deal with young children and hosting my in-laws for a thanksgiving dinner. The turkey started to slide out of the oven when I went to check it. I squatted down quickly to catch it. Unfortunately there was a small, very sturdy wooden child's chair right behind me. It got me good. Turkey was ok though.

Hope you can take it easy and get good pain killersDaffodilDaffodilDaffodil

Yes, I broke mine. It turns out there is a way to reset a broken tailbone. I went in 16 and innocent, and left scarred for life.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/02/2022 19:33

I did this sliding down the stairs on a metal tea tray. Drink had been taken. I didn’t feel it at the time but boy did I feel the next day and for many weeks later.

I hope you recover quickly op.

OldTinHat · 28/02/2022 19:41

I've broken my tailbone twice - it's not nice! Very painful. Unfortunately nothing can be done apart from take plenty of painkillers.

TopTabby · 28/02/2022 19:45

Oh yes, came down a waterside with an unexpected bump at the end. It was really sore for a couple of weeks.
A few weeks after that I sneezed in the car & seemed to do it again! It took a few months to stop hurting completely.

parafirstjoint · 28/02/2022 19:46

Yes broke mine and ended up in hospital on holiday in Greece. Was black and blue from the bottom of my bum up to my shoulder blades. Like proper back and blue took ages to heal.

Martianworld · 28/02/2022 19:46

I fell down the stairs and broke my coccyx shortly after having a spine fusion, where they cut me open and screwed a cage into my spine. That broken coccyx was so much more painful and lasted for about 6 weeks. No treatment, just try not to put pressure on it by sitting on it.

maya71 · 28/02/2022 19:49

Yes, a couple of years ago. It was OK at the time but the next morning driving to work, I was in agony - feeling sick and almost crying with the pain. I'm on my feet a lot at work so didn't notice it too much but sitting was painful for a couple of weeks and even a year later sitting on a hard chair was painful after a while. It's OK now though.

HumbugWhale · 28/02/2022 19:59

I broke mine by falling off a horse. It was very painful for a long time but gradually got better. It sometimes hurts now e.g. if I sit for a very long time.
I hope you can get some good pain relief and feel better soon.

TheVanguardSix · 28/02/2022 20:05

I broke mine snowboarding years ago... I think I was 25 at the time so, about 25 years ago now.
Oh my god... it was so painful. I was in bed for a month, couldn't walk, couldn't move. It really was awful.
My mum hairline fractured hers when the plane she was on hit sudden bad turbulence. She had been walking down the aisle to the toilets and got thrown around a bit. Anyway, that too was years ago!
Glad to hear you're getting it checked out. I've never had any residual problems with my coccyx/lower back and neither has my mum, just to reassure you.

SparkleSky · 28/02/2022 20:07

Does it get better the hurting when you go to stand up after sitting for a while? I fell heavily on mine at the beginning of December and it's still really painful when I am going from sitting to standing up.

userxx · 28/02/2022 20:08

Ouch. Those tailbones take a while to mend...... think months rather than weeks 😞

SilverGlassHare · 28/02/2022 20:09

I damaged mine giving birth - not sure if it was cracked or just bruised but it took a while to heal and I had to sit on a hemorrhoid cushion for ages.

SayrraT · 28/02/2022 21:32

I fractured mine 3 years ago falling off my horse. I also fractured another vertebrae at the same time.

I couldn't sit down for at least 9 months, I knelt at work or stood. This year I had a procedure (manipulation under anaesthesia) to try to fix it. It didn't work and the only alternatives are living with it or have it removed.

I'd definitely get it checked out to make sure you've not injured anything else at least.

I have a standing desk at work now which helps massively, I cam now sit for about 1.5 hrs at a time and ride for 45 mins before i have pain.

lisaandalan · 28/02/2022 22:33

Maybe get painkillers from your dr. X

betwixtlives · 28/02/2022 22:36

Mine aches intermittently since giving birth. At the time the doctors wondered if I’d fractured it but the x ray dept rejected their request for x ray as nothing can be done to fix it so pointless knowing whether it was or wasn’t fractured
