Still having periods at 56!

And having peri menopausal symptoms.
I am so fed up with this, I thought my periods would have stopped by now.
Anyone else still having them at this age.

OP posts:
TonTonMacoute · 28/02/2022 15:36

They have stopped now thank god (I'm 61) but I had regular periods up until at least 58/9 - can't remember exactly.

It was a real nuisance but I did have a relatively easy menopause overall so swings and roundabouts.

The worst was all the perimenopause symptoms which I went through in my late 40s, that's when hot flushes, night sweats and really heavy bleeding were at their worst.

[quote PutinNOnukin]@Sansucre I'll take the advice from my GP who specialises in menopause and my consultant.

Of course. Understood.

So interested to have found this thread!

I am 57 and have been on HRT for over 10 years. I have recently changed (again) to try and find one which meant I didn’t bleed any more. It’s looking like I might have found a solution! I take a progesterone pill every night - Ultrogestan, and a spray of Oestrogen - Lenzetto.

I am so reassured to find I was not the only woman still bleeding at 57!

Yep that was me and they literally just stopped on the last year and I am now on HRT for night sweats and back to having them. GP couldn't get the mirena coil in so I am having to take progesterone.

RuthW · 28/02/2022 15:46

I'm 54 and still having them but not every month.

PutinNOnukin · 28/02/2022 15:48

@Sansucre But thank you 🙂

gingerhills · 28/02/2022 15:49

Mine stopped at 56. Really pissed me off to have them for so long. But I think there are some health benefits, like better bone density etc.

52andblue · 28/02/2022 15:52

54 1/2. Still menstuating every 28 days. Peri symptoms so asked for HRT. Started Evorel sequui 50 but effects wore off quite quick. GP hopeless.

jollygreenpea · 28/02/2022 15:56

Oh blimey I have PCOS, I have been extremely irregular all my life, it's only the last couple of year that they have been slightly more regular.

I hope your theory is wrong Frazzlerock

Nelliephant1 · 28/02/2022 16:02

There was this exact same thread a few weeks ago. Have a search and you'll see that you're in good company

Frazzlerock · 28/02/2022 16:38

@jollygreenpea yeah me too tbh. Now they're more regular I'm getting bored of periods, I preferred them when they were few and far between! Grin

CuriousMariette · 28/02/2022 16:59

I think our expectations set us up for a fall on this. I keep reading that the average age of menopause is 52 so anyone still experiencing periods after that is made to feel like a freak. But if some are entering menopause in their 30s and 40s then surely it’s maths that some of us will be later. I’m 55 and friends saying “oh you’re late” pushes my meno rage buttons! Sorry OP the whole process is a bit shit really.

IsItTooHotInHere · 28/02/2022 17:05

My periods lasted until I was 59 1/2!

From the age of 54, I had horrendous flooding, and they often lasted for 2 or 3 weeks, only to have them start 2 weeks later. I was under the hospital for years, had endless scans, biopsies (incredibly painful), the coil (was pressured by the doctor into having it, had it taken out a couple of weeks afterwards), I had various hormone tablets. No, I'm 62 and it's wonderful not to have periods.

notacooldad · 28/02/2022 17:11

Yes me and I'm 57
So is my sister and she is your age.
There's been no change in my periods ever, they still arrive the same time eery month and last the same time as they always have.

BigWoollyJumpers · 28/02/2022 17:12

I'm 55 and still regular every 28 days. I am just about to go on HRT. I don't have terrible symptoms, but just a lot of meh, and GP is very pro HRT. I do have mild hypertension, but her take was that it should help with that. She's also a private menopause specialist, so I will go with her advice.

As with all things its a balance. I have family history of breast cancer too, but other benefits like blood pressure, and heart health, and dementia should be mitigated, so you win some, you lose some!

Hamsterfan · 28/02/2022 17:15

Going strong here at 54, like lots of you combining periods with hot flushes and other perimenopausal symptoms. Really fed up now, sadly my mum didn’t stop until about 59. Thought that investing in expensive modibodi pants for night time flooding might scare them away but sadly not!

Seafog · 28/02/2022 17:18

My mum had her last period on her sixty birthday , so I know I'm doomed for a long menopause

Bromse · 28/02/2022 17:23

A friend of mine had periods until she was past her 56th birthday, then they tailed off. She was glad to be free of them! It's not that unusual but I can understand it being a pain. Mine stopped at 51.5 and I was pleased about that but we are all different.

Content yourself with the knowledge that your periods cannot go on much longer but do be careful and don't stop using contraception just yet. Just in case something unlikely happens.

Not necessarily, my mum had hers in her late 50s, mine was quite early in my mid 40s.
AnotherPoster · 28/02/2022 17:36

I was talking to someone at work the other day. She's the same age as me (57). She was complaining about how annoying it was that she flooded often but never quite knew when it would happen as she was irregular. I was privately a bit like this Shock because my periods stopped when I was 50 and that feels like quite a long time ago now.

So you are definitely not alone.

@CuckooClocked

Looking for a plant or something nice to send through the post to a relative who has been having a rough time. Flowers are so expensive and arrive wilting. She loves plants and has a small balcony which doesn’t get a lot of sun. Otherwise chocolates?
Wrong thread?
YouOKhun · 28/02/2022 17:58

@Juniper68

Isn't there an HRT that stops them?

I'm 54 this year and still having them am on HRT. My gp is changing it this year and I was hoping it's one that doesn't give periods? As it's the progesterone part that does that.

I found that the wrong regime meant that I carried on having periods and they even started to get heavier. At the time I was pushing 54 and taking two Utrogestan pills for 12 days of the 28 day cycle (from memory) and two pumps of the Gel. My GP commented that it was probably no longer appropriate and changed it to one every day (and the same 2 pumps of gel). It’s a great improvement, no periods and I feel a bit more stable mood wise and less headaches.

Think this is true. Im taking progesterone only packets back to back to stop periods as they were so heavy. I stopped taking it after xmas as i was off work and i wanted to see if id still get a period. I did 😒

You're not wrong there, I completely agree. Grin
