Painkiller Allowance - Think I Was Served Wrongly In Tesco

I know you can only buy 2 packets of paracetamol at a time but yesterday I put 2 packets of ibuprofen & 2 packets of paracetamol on the belt & the cashier only allowed me to buy 1 of each. Ibuprofen are anti inflammatory so not the same as paracetamol. Was the cashier wrong? I work on a till & would let someone buy what I was trying to buy.

It’s two packs of pain relief in total - not two of each.

SantaHat · 26/02/2022 12:10

No. The cashier was correct. They can only sell two packets of painkillers. Doesn’t matter if they are both paracetamol or as per your case.

It doesn't make sense but it's correct.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 26/02/2022 12:12

Paracetamol and ibuprofen are two of the most commonly used over the counter medicines due to their availability and wide range of uses. Because of this, these medications are quite regularly taken incorrectly, unnecessarily or unsafely.

Says it all. Cashier was correct.

ChatterMonkey · 26/02/2022 12:12

The limit is just for paracetamol, so yes the cashier was incorrect.

Ive in the past bought two packs of lemsip and two packs of neurofen, and tried to also get a pack of normal paracetomol and was told the 5th item wasnt allowed. (Lots of people with colds in the house...!) So got 4 of the 5 items i wanted.

Erictheavocado · 26/02/2022 12:12

Our Tesco online shopping will allow a maximum of two paracetamol/ibuprofen products, whether that is two boxes of one or one of each. The instore pharmacy will allow bigger purchases if the pharmacist is present and they ask about your health and why you are buying them.

Wartywart · 26/02/2022 12:13

Cashier was correct. I went to Morrisons recently to buy two tubes of ibuprofen gel and some paracetamol for my elderly neighbour and was only allowed the two tubes of ibuprofen gel which surprised me, but there you go.

MichelleScarn · 26/02/2022 12:14

Would the cashiers machine not tell them yay or nay?

ChatterMonkey · 26/02/2022 12:14

Oh looking at the other comments, maybe it was me that got served incorrectly to get the amount I got 😂

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 26/02/2022 12:15

Cashier was right, you couldn't buy 2 packs of ibuprofen and a bottle of calpol either.

You need to brush up on these things if you work on a till, hopefully the till wouldn't allow it anyway, but you could get in trouble.

Peoplearetwats · 26/02/2022 12:16

Tills at Morrisons flag this up and stop scanning, so it’s 2 packs only. Can always go to pharmacy?

YouHaveYourFathersBreasts · 26/02/2022 12:21

It’s 2 packs of each. In the supermarket I work in it’s impossible to scan anything more than that in a single transaction. The till won’t let us and there’s no way to override that. We’re not allowed to sell them in 2 different transactions. Cashier was very much in the right.

Seeline · 26/02/2022 12:22

Yes - I've been caught by the bottle of Calpol before. Could only buy 1pack of paracetamol or ibuprofen with that.

Cashier was correct. I'm surprised your till allows you to serve 2 packs of both. I have never come across it elsewhere.

SickAndTiredAgain · 26/02/2022 12:22

Cashier was correct and where I’ve worked (two different supermarkets) the till would have stopped me putting more than 2 boxes through, of any painkiller.

Chloemol · 26/02/2022 12:27

Cashier was correct

Afolnerd · 26/02/2022 12:28

If the rules are only 2 packets even if they are different medications, how does Poundland and similar places get away with the 3 packets of paracetamol or ibuprofen for a £1?

Because it's guidance rather than the law.

Another thread about something the OP could have googled in 10 secs

Seasidemumma77 · 26/02/2022 12:41

My till won't allow me to sell more than two packets of pain relief per transaction

Usually a lower amount per packet
Kitkat151 · 26/02/2022 12:41

Cashier was correct.....maybe you need a training refresher course at work?

LittleRen · 26/02/2022 12:43

@Afolnerd Quantity within the packets doesn’t matter - it’s not unit of each. I guess to go any further would be complicated. Doesn’t make sense I know.

Ilikewinter · 26/02/2022 12:43

Boots allows 32 of each so you could buy 2 packets of each. Any more and you have to go via the pharmacy.
