HEADS ON FIRE - had anyone used steroid cream on their scalp?

N0T0RI0US · 25/02/2022 19:53

And was it OK?

I am having a terrible flare of whatever the condition I have on my scalp. It feels like it's burning, it is red and hot and itchy.

I know that steroid lotion would provide pretty instant relief but it is only available on prescription and I have failed to get even a telephone appmt with GP to get a prescription. I did an e-consult and was told to expect a response by 6.30pm on Friday but no response. And now its obviously the weekend.

Annoyingly steroid cream is available to buy over the counter, but the chemist I spoke to yesterday said couldn't advise use on the scalp as he didn't know if it would have unintended consequences, and I didnt want to wake up with no hair or whatever.

I just wanted to know if anyone has actually tried it because I'm desperate.

And yes I've tried taking antihistamines (more than I probably should) and tried medicated shampoo, and tried cold fucking showers and I'm desperate.

You can buy betnovate scalp lotion otc I think. Also, sorry to suggest this, but could you have caught head lice?

topcat2014 · 25/02/2022 20:01

Have you ever used T Gel?

I previously have with some success

N0T0RI0US · 25/02/2022 20:02

No you can't get the bentonite scalp lotion over the counter, I asked and it's only in prescription Sad

I dont have head lice, I think I may have psoriasis or dermatitis though.

Yes I have used ALL the shampoos and they have been fairly useful in the past. But nothing is touching this current flare.

Oh that is annoying. You used to be able to buy it. Can the pharmacist not suggest something?

Lordamighty · 25/02/2022 20:04

Yes I have used 0.5% hydrocortisone cream on small areas. It worked really well. Also Selsun shampoo is very effective.

EducatingArti · 25/02/2022 20:05

O have used betnovate and hydrocortisone cream 1% on the scalp. It was fine but I only used it for a couple of days.
You will also find that some online pharmacies will sell you betnovate scalp lotion without a prescription!

The pharmacist recommended T Gel but I already have that.

I saw that but I didn't want to wait for delivery, that may take a few days.

I've found Polytar to be fairly effective when used over time. You can buy it at boots but from the pharmacist, though can order online from them without. Also it gets a but messy and annoying but valeting works well rubbed in to the scalp too.

Lordamighty · 25/02/2022 20:12

You used to able to buy Selsun over the counter at the chemist but I order mine online now.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/02/2022 20:17

My dd used beynovatr on areas of her scalp as advised by doc.

I’d use it, wouldn’t even think about. Itchy scalps are just horrendous.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/02/2022 20:18

Betnovate!! Or Eumovate

N0T0RI0US · 25/02/2022 20:23

I'm not looking for shampoo recommendations guys, believe I have tried them all Grin

I know I need benovate steroid scalp lotion, but it is prescription only so my hope of getting my hands on a bottle before Monday are slim!

Just looking for advice on using hydrocortisone CREAM on my scalp against the pharmacists advice.

I was prescribed a topical steroid cream for alopecia. I can't remember which one sorry, but no ill effects apart from some very odd dreams Confused

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/02/2022 20:24

Use it!!! Dd was fine. And she was only 9!

Hc45 cream really helps my scalp psoriasis, I use it whenever I run out of my prescribed stuff. I find all the shampoos and gels do absolutely sweet FA. Either burn or do nothing except make my head greasy. No harm trying the cream.

RagzRebooted · 25/02/2022 20:35

It won't do any long term harm to use for a few days, but you really need it looking at in case there is some infection there too. In which case, Fucibet would be better (Fucidic acid and betnovate).

Pharmacy won't let anyone buy hydrocortisone for their face/head (which is sensible), as it should be done under medical advice.

Haha would love some medical advice or just a bleeding prescription Angry

I don't think it's an infection, just a flare of my usual skin condition. It has happened before and steroid lotion sorted it back to manageable levels.

Was referred to Dermatology outpatients last summer, still waiting!

I have used hydrocortisone cream on my scalp too. Am male and 50, but even so didn't notice hair falling out, thankfully.

Lemonlady22 · 25/02/2022 20:50

Ignore the 'don't use it on your face'etc, this is advice given by GP's and pharmacists who have had basic training in dermatology and have no idea in treatments AND what it's like to have skin which feels like it's on fire! in My dermatologist says use it sparingly where you need too. I use betnovate lotion on my head or the cream if I haven't got any. I've used betnovate all my life because I needed too. Ask for a dermatology referral. People say 'your skin doesn't look too bad' BUT most of the time it's how it FEELS !

DorisJoy · 25/02/2022 20:53

I use Dermovate scalp lotion which is prescribed and have dabbed steroid cream on small areas when I’ve been out of it. Eucerin do a non steroid scalp lotion which can ease the burning sensation (lupus lesions). Ideally you need to know what the cause is to treat correctly. Hopefully a derm app will come through soon.

WhiteXmas21 · 25/02/2022 20:58

Have used synalar and loci if on scalp several times and been fine. Also find sulphate free shampoo and conditioner is set for scalp long term but will not solve immediate problem.
