HEADS ON FIRE - had anyone used steroid cream on their scalp?

And was it OK?

I am having a terrible flare of whatever the condition I have on my scalp. It feels like it's burning, it is red and hot and itchy.

I know that steroid lotion would provide pretty instant relief but it is only available on prescription and I have failed to get even a telephone appmt with GP to get a prescription. I did an e-consult and was told to expect a response by 6.30pm on Friday but no response. And now its obviously the weekend.

Annoyingly steroid cream is available to buy over the counter, but the chemist I spoke to yesterday said couldn't advise use on the scalp as he didn't know if it would have unintended consequences, and I didnt want to wake up with no hair or whatever.

I just wanted to know if anyone has actually tried it because I'm desperate.

And yes I've tried taking antihistamines (more than I probably should) and tried medicated shampoo, and tried cold fucking showers and I'm desperate.

Well I've just rubbed the hydrocortisone cream into my scalp and my ears (also on fire).
I'll let you know if I wake up bald tomorrow Sad

If it's any consolation OP it made my bald patch grow back, so I wouldn't fret GrinGrin

(Seriously, I hope it brings you some relief)

I use hydrocortisone cream and ketaconazole shampoo.

@N0T0RI0US

I'm not looking for shampoo recommendations guys, believe I have tried them all Grin

I know I need benovate steroid scalp lotion, but it is prescription only so my hope of getting my hands on a bottle before Monday are slim!

Just looking for advice on using hydrocortisone CREAM on my scalp against the pharmacists advice.

I get betnovate scalp lotion on repeat prescription. I'm pretty sure it's much stronger than the 1% cream you can buy OTC so I would have no problem using that cream on my scalp until I could get hold of the proper stuff. I know exactly how you feel. No shampoo or conditioner is ever going to touch the problem.

DS3 had bad eczema flare on his forehead/hair line and was prescribed hydrocortisone so can’t see it being too much of an issue! Hope you get some relief soon.

Although this might not help you right now it's saved my brother loads of pain. He did an exclusion diet and worked out he was allergic to citric acid. This is in loads of food and also loads of shampoos. As long as he doesn't have any he no longer has the flare ups.

I hope you find some relief.

Have you tried Nizoral? I had bright pink (practically glowing) itchy scalp and it calmed down completely after a few washes.

I don’t think any shampoos touch severe cases. I used to use Nizarol, but it stopped working. None of the millions recommended on here have ever touched mine, and I’ve wasted so much money on the lines of Ohilip Kingsley and Moo Goo.

Betnovate solution is like some sort of opiate drug, as soon as you use it, you can feel it calming. Then you get desperate for it again!

traintraveller · 26/02/2022 09:07

Hydrocortisone is a much weaker steroid that betnovate so you should be fine. You can buy Eumovate cream which is the strength between hydrocortisone and betnovate but you would have to lie about where you are applying it.

BirdOnTheWire · 26/02/2022 15:39

Hope you get to see the dermatologist soon OP.
I think you will find they are much more gung ho about using steroids than GPs or pharmacists.
I have tried every single thing mentioned on this thread, nizoral, selsun, polytar and all the rest. Nothing gives blessed relief like betnovate.
I maybe only use it once a month now and it keeps the red hot itching at bay.

So I’m sure the cream on the scalp will be ok to soothe it temporarily. But even though we’re not allowed to suggest shampoo, I’m going to go right in and recommend kerastase dermocalm shampoo, which is expensive but is what I discovered when I lived abroad and couldn’t get the prescription for betnovate quickly. It works wonders, especially for burning , red, flakey scalps. You can buy in in local salons that use kerastase. It’s fairly expensive but effective.
As another alternative, you could try a shop that specialises in hair products for Afro hair (the kind of shop that most cities have with big jars of coconut oils / aloe/ extensions etc. In the past I have managed to buy steroid based scalp ointment otc there.
