Feeling very tearful at the thought of ordinary people in Kyiv being given guns

I find it heartbreaking and so sad to think of ordinary families in Kyiv being told to make Molotov cocktails and defend themselves with guns. Can't imagine how terrified I would feel if BoJo was handing out machine guns telling us to protect our nation. Anyone else?

OP posts:
showmethegin · 25/02/2022 20:38

What are people problems on here? The images of ordinary people being handed guns to try and defend themselves against one of the biggest military powers in the world IS shocking. Watching ordinary people that were going about normal lives up until a few days ago hiding in subways is terrifying. Having a madman threatening the world with nuclear weapons is completely abhorrent and for a lot of people dependant on age completely unprecedented.

I don't think OP came on here saying "oh poor me, I'm upset", she came on here to share her feelings and talk to others about a really scary situation. MN is a different planet sometimes.

Ukraine is a hunting nation, they have gun shops all over the country. It's like hearing that USA men are being given guns to protect themselves. We all know Americans are a gun nation. Majority of people taking the guns in Ukraine most likely have handled one before.

Appletreechocolatecake · 25/02/2022 20:52

OP it’s awful. Of course you are distressed by it. Some posters on here are just unspeakably vile. The nastiness is sickening.

Well said. It’s not virtue signaling to admit that you’re personally upset by what’s happening in Ukraine. Last night I imagined that all the young men that work in my office were already fighting and potentially dead. It’s pretty awful.

It’s also okay to feel more disturbed by people living in a European city being bombed than somewhere more ‘foreign’ like Syria. That’s not being racist it’s just human psychology.

Bonheurdupasse · 25/02/2022 21:30

@MrsTerryPratchett

Everyone is different.
But also influenced by different circumstances. My mother volunteered for the (army) national service, after having heard stories about the soviet invasion from her family.

I agree…lots of very nasty antagonistic people around today …I got the gist of OP post and she clearly just needs a vent …be kind .

We need to take action! Put pressure on our mps to push NATO into allowing troops in the ground, Europe needs to block Russia with every economic sanction possible. Russia should no longer be apart of SWIFT financial systems. We need in the longer term to stop relying on Russian energy- that Iron curtain needs putting back up!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 25/02/2022 21:42

Bloody hell there's some aggressive fuckers on here .

It is shocking, its not something you really think about is it. Being given weapons so you can defend your country and family

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 25/02/2022 21:44

@lemmein

Pure cunty answers to the OP. For every perceived 'virtue signalling' post there's a barrage of posters fighting over themselves to castigate the 'virtue signaller' for not having the same emotions (presumably) they do for other victims of war - therefore, becoming virtue signallers themselves 🤣

Got no chance of global peace when people can't reply to a simple post without being a cunt!

And all of this!

There's really no need for people to go on the attack

EmpressCixi · 25/02/2022 21:48

Nothing new. Every country expects its civilians to be last bit of defence and for most part, they do form militias and resistance movements to counter invaders and occupiers.

Undecicive · 25/02/2022 22:17

Bloody hell, are we not allowed to talk about our emotions any more? I don't do it here, but in reality after 2 years of lockdows, a move to a new area, new colleagues I don't really fit in with; it'd be nice to 'have somebody to talk to'. I can't afford a therapist at the moment.
I suppose others can be in similar position and they get shot down.

Kumbaya12 · 25/02/2022 22:18

LOL at all the sudden tearful and emotional people.
This has been building for months, nobody's really surprised.
Also having an actor as president... who ran after playing a president on TV.. and won!

Have all of you JUST only noticed? Incredible

It's one thing imagining it and another seeing it.
Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 22:29

absolutely show me the gin.

There are some absolutely strange posters around today on all the Ukraine threads!

SWS17 · 25/02/2022 22:31

Goodness the cruelty from some posters on this post… you don’t have to read the post if discussion about Ukraine is not of interest you.

OP was exercising her right to convey her sadness at an utterly tragic situation. Different people have different ways of dealing with horrific news. To say that she was virtue signalling by expressing empathy towards Ukrainian people and shock at what they are facing is ridiculous. Don’t criticise OP for her empathy when you are clearly lacking in that department.

OP, I stand with you in shock, horror and utter fear for the people of Ukraine on this dark day.

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 22:34

@Undecicive

Of course!
This is a chat forum with the emphasis on being supportive and helpful.
Of course that remit is filled by us processing and sharing information at this time.
There have been some odd posters on here since the invasion.
People also understandably get worked up a kit this And angry. they feel impotent and being rude to strangers on the internet makes rlthem feel better.
Try to make them feel better

WhiteJellycat · 25/02/2022 22:35

Objectively having a gun there right now is a sure recipe to get killed fast. Fleeing is the safest option. They dont stand a chance of winning out. God have mercy on them right now

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 22:41

Sorry!! This blasted phone!!
I meant ignore them.

Some people think we are entering university dissertation rather than chewing the fat, typing out loud.
Someone even thought Putin would be interested in MNGrin

Ignore..Wine

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 22:41

I was thinking with the world watching passive resistant maybe better.

AlexaShutUp · 25/02/2022 22:43

I don't think the OP is virtue signalling. There is nothing especially virtuous in being shocked and saddened by war in any case, and I'm sure most people are feeling something similar. I don't get why people don't seem to understand that people deal with this stuff in different ways. The OP is just trying to process how she feels by talking about it. She's doing no harm.

And yes, OP, the idea of handing out AK47s to citizens is horrifyingly. I think most of us can empathise with how awful things are for the Ukrainian people right now.

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 22:46

Of course it's not Vs

As has been repeated it's the very everyday suddenly turned into average Joe's Throwing petrol bomb s of course people will be moved by this!!

FatCatThinCat · 25/02/2022 22:48

Shocking replies on this thread. Lots of people will be taking a massive hit to their mental health right now. But god forbid they should want to talk about their feelings. How about we support each other to manage our feelings of sadness and fear rather than tearing each other down.

RobertaFirmino · 25/02/2022 23:02

Of course the whole situation is upsetting. But how the hell do you think Ukranians are feeling? I suspect they're a tad upset themselves. This is about them, not us. I'm glad they've got guns. I'd flaming well want one too.

BurbageBrook · 25/02/2022 23:04

OP you didn’t say anything wrong. You’re just expressing human empathy. Sorry you got attacked by needlessly unkind people for no reason.

CayrolBaaaskin · 25/02/2022 23:09

It’s awful and I find it deeply disturbing. Op I’m with you- it’s awful and I would like to do more to help.
