Feeling very tearful at the thought of ordinary people in Kyiv being given guns

I find it heartbreaking and so sad to think of ordinary families in Kyiv being told to make Molotov cocktails and defend themselves with guns. Can't imagine how terrified I would feel if BoJo was handing out machine guns telling us to protect our nation. Anyone else?

OP posts:

I'm baffled by this. What do you think a petrol bomb is?

The clue is in the name 😆

VikingVolva · 25/02/2022 19:07

@Viviennemary

I would do it. I'd rather go down fighting than become an obedient serf under Putin's regime.
I wouldn't be that rash.

Kyiv is going to fall. I'd rather survive short term and join the resistance. Going down in a blaze of glory during the first (foregone conclusion) assault won't help form the longer term fightback

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 19:08

True.
The resistance is what will be the biggest thorn in Putins side'.

Well clearly not since the poster thought they would present logistical difficulties for civilians.
lemmein · 25/02/2022 19:12

Pure cunty answers to the OP. For every perceived 'virtue signalling' post there's a barrage of posters fighting over themselves to castigate the 'virtue signaller' for not having the same emotions (presumably) they do for other victims of war - therefore, becoming virtue signallers themselves 🤣

Got no chance of global peace when people can't reply to a simple post without being a cunt!

Just look at what happened to the US and other forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I don't know how Russian forces will act if they occupy Ukraine - but an occupied people can make life very difficult for an occupying force.

MissAmbrosia · 25/02/2022 19:14

The UK has sold arms used to blow the shit out of innocent civilians for years and years. The Russians too. And other countries. I cannot abide all the "poor me, I am so upset" posts.

meditrina · 25/02/2022 19:14

Info on Molotov cocktail type petrol bombs

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molotov_cocktail

I thought this wouil be the sort of stuff that is suppressed online, but perhaps it's just so widely known that it wouid be silly to try

RealRaymondReddington · 25/02/2022 19:15

It is heartbreaking and their president and office are incredibly brave and honourable. I am in awe of them, the rest of the Ukrainians fighting and the Russians who are protesting. All these deaths (on all sides) are so unnecessary. Ukraine are managing to make Putin look bad and he is in danger of making a martyr of Zelensky, which is not what he will want.

Pretty sure Boris would not be dishing out the guns though. He would probably desert us rather swiftly and be sending us videos from a very nice fridge in the Caymans or somewhere before popping open the Chamagne. Sorry if that sounds flippant but the man has about as much honour as my fingernail.

I wish as a country we were doing more for the refugees.

user1471453601 · 25/02/2022 19:15

@Viviennemary, did you catch the the messages between the Russian ship and the Ukrainian army on the small Ukrainian island?

Ship"this is a Russians war ship, surrender now to avoid loss of life"

Soldiers "Russian war ship, go fuck yourself".

The soldiers are now dead, but they had their say, perfectly clearly.

I take a gun,but given that I'm too feeble to break the seal on a deodrant,I doubt if I'd be much use. But I could hand if to my daughter when she ran out of ammunition.

But, to be serious those people in Ukraine are very brave in the face of such aggression

meditrina · 25/02/2022 19:16

Is this the first time this has occurred to you about your fellow humans in a conflict or just because it's Europe it's finally occurring to you that these are regular humans like you?

Unless someone is very young, is it really likely they wouid not have noticed that there has been war in Europe for ten of the last 20 years?

cheddez · 25/02/2022 19:18

Pretty sure Boris would not be dishing out the guns though.

The majority of is haven't done military service so I don't think we should be given guns tbh.

RealRaymondReddington · 25/02/2022 19:22

Thats probably fair, my aim is appalling too so probably best not! I just meant that he wouldn't get his hands dirty though.

This reminded me of the US 101st Airborne who were surrounded by German troops at Bastogne and were offered surrender terms.

Their reply has gone down in military history

"Nuts"

They fought on bravely and ultimately prevailed.

I have so much respect for people who resist despite facing awful consequences.

"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends"

People in Nazi Germany resisted - and paid the ultimate price with kangaroo court justice.

People in occupied Europe resisted - and we all know the reprisals and the torture they faced.

It takes so much courage.

Christmas1988 · 25/02/2022 19:31

I know it’s not as simple as this but I think we should shut off our gas and oil that comes from Russia, if all I have to do is be cold to save someone’s life, it seems an easy sacrifice. We must all do our bit to save the lives of others, I agree with how sad it all is.

cheddez · 25/02/2022 19:40

@RealRaymondReddington one tip if you ever in such a situation. Do not mimic action films & shoot a gun on its side 😆

MargaretThursday · 25/02/2022 19:44

Of course we should talk about things and express public outrage, but we can do it without making it all about ourselves and our feelings.

This.

There have been several threads about how devastated people are feeling for Ukraine. Has anyone answered "well I'm delighted for them. Isn't it great"? No. Let's assume we're all feeling angry on behalf of Ukraine.
It's like the photos you get on your local fb site of a car crash with comments of "how awful" or "hope they're all okay" by people who are actually rather enjoying being able to gawk without being involved themselves.

If you feel that way so much you want to do something, rather than telling everyone how bad you feel, why don't you go out and find how you can help? Be it lobbying the government to do more, donating to charities that are on the ground or other ways.
Sitting around shaking your head and saying "someone" else should do something is not going to do you or anyone any good.

TerraNovaTwo · 25/02/2022 19:47

@Sheilablessus

You sound surprised OP, Why? It has been talked about for months. did you think it 'just' talk? Are you blaming the Ukrainians for fighting back? Are you a Russian sympathiser? Is that why you think it wrong to arm them.
Really? Just FO
MrsTerryPratchett · 25/02/2022 19:48

Most people don't know how to load and fire a gun. And studies show that even in war, most new soldiers shoot to miss or don't shoot.

If you think you would pick up a gun and start killing invaders, you are probably wrong. You would run and hide or surrender.

We all hope we'd be resistance. We are more likely to be collaborators.

Which is why we need the systems to work. And take hard decisions. So aggressors can't slice off pieces of democracies.

cheddez · 25/02/2022 19:53

Most Ukrainians learn shooting at school though.

I can shoot. Doesn't mean I would.
RealRaymondReddington · 25/02/2022 20:02

@cheddez Duly noted, thanks Grin

cheddez · 25/02/2022 20:05

@MrsTerryPratchett I was replying to your point Most people don't know how to load and fire a gun. I wouldn't compare the UK to Ukraine in terms of gun experience.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/02/2022 20:25

I get that @cheddez

I think my point remains though.

Garysmum · 25/02/2022 20:28

I can shoot too. If I was given a gun would I take it? Don’t know. I’ve got limited mobility and would be a sitting duck in any case.
It’s a horrid thought. Like something out a nightmare OP
