Can anyone explain to me in simple terms what’s going on with Russia and Ukraine

Like what’s the actual problem ?

Russia have invaded Ukraine.

Sittinginthesand · 25/02/2022 13:04

We, watch the news? Russia is invading Ukraine because putin wants to control it / recreate the ussr. Unsurprisingly Ukrainians don’t want to be invaded and are resisting as best they can in the face of a vastly more powerful army.

MaizeAmaze · 25/02/2022 13:05

This was obviously written before the events of the past 2 days, but

I meant Er, not we.

Polkadotties · 25/02/2022 13:10

Putin wants to recreate the USSR. He is like Hitler taking back Poland.

bluejelly · 25/02/2022 13:11

I think this is a fair question that doesn't deserve snarky responses. Russia has long wanted Ukraine to be part of Russia - there are a lot of Russian speakers in the East and some of those want to be part of Russia too.
However most Ukrainians want to stay independent and would rather join NATO. NATO was set up to protect European countries from Russia so Putin definitely doesn't want that to happen. So he has invaded Ukraine.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 25/02/2022 13:12

Thank at least I understand a bit more about what’s actaully going on now
Thanks for the link too

Putin doesn't want Ukraine to join NATO and he's still pissed off that the USSR isn't what it was when he was in the KGB so he's decided he'll reclaim it. Then he can put a government that answers to him in place (like Belarus) and keep a buffer between him and the West.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 25/02/2022 13:19

More likely is that Russia wants the Ukrainian resources. Putin is a greedy narcissist.

This is why Ukraine matters-it is the second largest country by area in Europe and has a population of over 40 million.

Ukraine ranks:
1st in Europe in proven recoverable reserves of uranium ores
2nd place in Europe and 10th place in the world in terms of titanium ore reserves
2nd place in the world in terms of explored reserves of manganese ores (2.3 billion tons, or 12% of the world's reserves)
2nd largest iron ore reserves in the world (30 billion tons)
2nd place in Europe in terms of mercury ore reserves
3rd place in Europe (13th place in the world) in shale gas reserves (22 trillion cubic meters)
4th in the world by the total value of natural resources
7th place in the world in coal reserves (33.9 billion tons)
Ukraine is an important agricultural country:
1st in Europe in terms of arable land area
3rd place in the world by the area of black soil (25% of world's volume)
1st place in the world in exports of sunflower and sunflower oil
2nd place in the world in barley production and 4th place in barley exports
3rd largest producer and 4th largest exporter of corn in the world
4th largest producer of potatoes in the world
5th largest rye producer in the world
5th place in the world in bee production (75,000 tons)
8th place in the world in wheat exports
9th place in the world in the production of chicken eggs
16th place in the world in cheese exports
Ukraine can meet the food needs of 600 million people.
Ukraine is an important industrialized country:
1st in Europe in ammonia production
Europe's 2nd’s and the world’s 4th largest natural gas pipeline system
3rd largest in Europe and 8th largest in the world in terms of installed capacity of nuclear power plants;l
3rd place in Europe and 11th in the world in terms of rail network length (21,700 km)
3rd place in the world (after the U.S. and France) in production of locators and locating equipment
3rd largest iron exporter in the world
4th largest exporter of turbines for nuclear power plants in the world
4th world's largest manufacturer of rocket launchers
4th place in the world in clay exports
4th place in the world in titanium exports
8th place in the world in exports of ores and concentrates
9th place in the world in exports of defence industry products
10th largest steel producer in the world (32.4 million tons)

Ukraine matters. That is why its independence is important to the rest of the world. These resources are why Russia is chomping at the bits to take it.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 25/02/2022 13:22

Putin is trying to piece the Soviet Union back together starting with Ukraine. If the West interferes he has threatened to retaliate in ways we can’t even imagine. Think hung drawn and quartered, heads on sticks kind of thing. So world leaders are kind of watching to see what happens.

BoodleBug51 · 25/02/2022 13:23

It's what happens when senile old men with mental health problems get voted into power.

It's bewildering to think that Russia and the US have done so.

To be fair if I had the choice of Biden or Trump right now I’m very glad to have Biden.
ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind · 25/02/2022 13:28

Putin believes the Russian people in Ukraine are being oppressed/treated badly. He thinks Ukraine should be part of Russia.

Susu49 · 25/02/2022 13:32

Ukraine was once part of the USSR although before that it was an independent state after the Russian Revolution.

Putin has based much of his image on Restoring Russian pride after the fall of the USSR (much like Hitler did with Germany on his rise to power).

So he annexed the Crimea a few years ago, which was an obvious precursor to this invasion. He also took Georgia in 2008 (although I don't know much about that).

Ukraine also holds strategic importance for Russia.

Additionally, Putin feels his regime is threatened by the gradual expansion of Nato as more Eastern European countries (and countries also now free of the USSR and valuing democracy) join.

There is some argument that a gentlemans agreement was made between the west and Russia that Nato would never expand to a point where it would threaten Russia but this isn't much of a case for invasion.

Democratic countries fear the Ukraine invasion is a signal of empire expansion in the same way Hitler sought to expand the Third Reich beyond Germany and conquer Europe last century. Given that China is believed to have similar aims, there is also a widespread concern that China is watching to see how the West reacts to invasion of Ukraine. China has made no secret of the fact it denies Taiwan's sovereignty, which is under constant threat of invasion from them.

While there is some argument that Russia lacks the resources to launch a full scale war against Europe, they do have nuclear weapons and many people believe Putin is unhinged enough to use them. There is also the chance of an alliance between China and Russia should the situation escalate.

While democratic Western countries have pursued peace, defended their military and taken Russian & Chinese money (in exchange for power and influence in their counties), China has been increasing it's military might on a huge scale in recent years. They've also been creating man made islands in the Pacific which give them strategic strongholds and are laying claim to large parts of the waters in those areas.

In the meantime, the West has been ravaged by financial crises and the pandemic and Western alliances have been challenged by Brexit.

People are terrified that if the situation escalates, Nato could be drawn into a war of a huge scale and we feel woefully unprepared.

There is much more to it, in terms of history and nuance and debates over what has had the greater affect on leading to this situation. Also debates about how likely the worst case scenarios are to occur.

I'm not sure why the same fears didn't play out with the invasion of Georgia, but this current aggression from Putin is certainly seen as a threat to everyone.

MrsMigginsCat · 25/02/2022 13:34

Putin wants to recreate the USSR that he was a part of in his KGB days so he's invaded Ukraine to try and reclaim it. Whether he'll stop at just Ukraine, who knows but let's hope so otherwise we're facing dark days ahead. He's an unpredictable megalomaniac and it's scary stuff.

jytdtysrht · 25/02/2022 13:36

Putin is a greedy megalomaniac. That’s all.

It's what happens when psychopaths and narcissists get into power. Unfortunately its common throughout the world that evil people get in positions of power. Heck, its common everywhere, we all know that nasty cow in middle management in the workplace that delights in making people miserable.

John Simpson has a very good and measured summary of the hows and whys on the BBC website. My 14 year olds read it in class this morning.

DuncinToffee · 25/02/2022 13:43

Check out Ros Atkins videos on the BBC website or twitter, he explains it very clearly.

This one is about how Ukraine's history connects to the Russia invasion

Russia wants the Soviet Union back together, Putin has said the Ukrainian people need to be saved from Genocide and Nazism so has gone in to ‘protect’ and liberate Ukraine, this is all false, but it’s Putins way in.

This is very very simple terms obviously there’s more going on but that’s the jist of it.

Thank you for listing this out. It makes everything really clear. This makes the most sense bc whilst putin is indeed a megalomaniac with visions of past glory it doesn't really explain why the rest of the power men are backing him so much. Its money. Just money Angry

He doesn’t. He just wants it back in the old, tightly controlled, USSR ‘net’. If you think he gives a fuck about the Ukrainians, I’m afraid you are sadly deluded.
LovelyYellowLabrador · 26/02/2022 09:06

thanks for the info, didn’t know this about China
Or how productive Ukraine is
Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me
