World Book Day - help!

Bbq1 · 24/02/2022 17:33

I work in a school and we are all dressing up for World Book Day as a literary character the children will (mostly) know. I don't really want to be paying out £30+ for an outfit I will wear once a year at most. If anyone has any ideas for an easy to make homemade outfit it would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

What age are your students?

tothemoonandbackbuses · 24/02/2022 17:35

Could you be the farmer from farmer fuck? The mum from the tiger who can for tea? If you’ve got brown trousers and a top you could turn yourself into stick man.

CharacterForming · 24/02/2022 17:38

Female teachers lacking in inspiration traditionally dress as witches - pointy hat + wand = McGonagall (or other witch of your choice depending on age and hairstyle).

Tracy Beaker
Pippi Longstocking
Annie

Could you be the farmer from farmer fuck?

That's a children's book? 😂

CoffeeBeansGalore · 24/02/2022 17:41

One of the Scooby Doo girls? Purple top & skirt plus headband for Daphne. Orange top & skirt plus glssses for Velma. Preferably with a plush Scooby Doo 😊

🤣🤣

Burglar Bill? Mask and a stripy top is all you need really. A swag bag if you're feeling extravagant

My pupils have SEN and are primary age. Haha, I considered the witch idea but decided against it! I am in my 40s.

Can you get a blond wig? Wear that, carry three teddies and you can be Goldilocks and the 3 bears.

Divebar2021 · 24/02/2022 17:44

Surely this depends on what resources you have already. Don’t go reinventing the wheel. Look at hats and coats / dresses etc and see if anything jumps out. Willie Wonka wore a red coat and big sunglasses ( 2nd film version). Paddington a duffle. Cruella De Ville fake fur although the later film versions she wore leather jackets etc. Gangster granny. Cat in hat. All these are costumes I’ve pulled together from clothes we had it acquired cheaply through charity shops.

Our WBD dress up is the same day my class go swimming and the pool is meltingly hot so I'm going as the Trunchbull - grey hoodie, black leggings, sports socks, belt, boots and hair scraped up into a messy bun. I can easily take the hoodie, boots and socks off and not be too warm!

RosieBdy · 24/02/2022 17:48

I bought the little red riding hood one from Asda quite a few years ago now. £16 which I felt wasn't too bad and will get worn every year...
They also have Alice in Wonderland and Mary Poppins this year.

DD teacher was Mr Bump a couple of years ago and the same teacher was also Mr Bump as DS teacher - just an all blue costume with white bandages. Most of the Mister Men/Little Miss characters are just dressed in all one colour with a hat or accessory and should be known by even children with some learning difficulties.
I fancy Sophie's tights from Tiger who Came to Tea, myself.
And DD is going to be Mildred Hubble but a) I am not sure a gym slip is a good look on an adult woman and b) your pupils might not know her.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 24/02/2022 17:54

Dorothy from the wizard of oz? Blue dress preferably gingham, red shoes and a toy dog?
Goldilocks very similar
See what onesies are in asda and go for tiger who came to tea (or get a colleague to where the onesie and you be Sophie's mum and make a cardboard tin of tiger food) or a dalmation, lion (lots of books)

drspouse · 24/02/2022 17:55

You don't need a cardboard tin, just put paper round a tin of beans (but don't let your DC take the paper off later and then forget it was beans).

stuntbubbles · 24/02/2022 17:56

Please, please be Farmer Fuck 😂😂😂

Forgetaboutme · 24/02/2022 17:59

Gangsta granny? Just any old fashioned granny type clothes you might have. A black bin bag and make a black eye mask thing

Little red riding hood? Again, normal dress but with a red hoodie if you have one. Preferably have a basket too

Popfan · 24/02/2022 18:01

I literally go as a cat every year... you just need to wear black clothes, buy some ears and a tail and use eyeliner to draw on whiskers and so on. Loads of books with cats in eg 6 dinner Sid, various fairy tales etc

ddshocker · 24/02/2022 18:01

Dress...red ribbon...Matilda...done!

MrsDThomas · 24/02/2022 18:06

I absolutely loathe these days.

My son always went as a footballer. MOTD book in his hand. Job done.

mumofEandE · 24/02/2022 18:06

Where's Wally is my go to !

Even better!! This is why I would need mumsnet if I ever had to dress up!!

If you have anything stripey could you make a tail and ears, paint on whiskers and be mog from meg and mog

SpringRainbow · 24/02/2022 18:12

I must admit, I always just made do with what we already have. Onsies are amazing for this as kids can wear them again as loungewear/ PJs in the winter.
