If he wants to actually dress up then maybe Greg from diary of a wimpy kid or dressed all in black and say he is a full stop.

However in my experience honestly at 10 most of the kids just wear normal mufti day clothes and 'pretend' to be muggles or football kits and say they are so and so from their favourite players autobiography.

There’s going to be a feature on This Morning soon, so take a look at suggestions there.

My 9 year old is choosing Harry Potter

DS always went as tintin. Just spiked up hair and a blue jumper!

pinkcattydude · 24/02/2022 11:15

Skullduggery Pleasant suit and skull mask?

sandycloud · 24/02/2022 11:15

My son around that age went as Tom gates?? We made a big caramel wafer.

BasiliskFace · 24/02/2022 11:19

We have had :
Hiccup from How to Train your Dragon - furry waistcoat, welly boots and Viking helmet
Dennis the Menace - black and red T-shirt and wig
Percy Jackson - normal clothes but Camp Half Blood T-shirt (loads on Amazon)

gogohm · 24/02/2022 11:26

Dd when as Jessie from toy story one year (yes they have made books of the story). She also went as one of the kids from the narnia books and a generic elf from lord of the rings/hobbit

Legoisthebest · 24/02/2022 11:28

What books does he actually like....

jellybeanteaparty · 24/02/2022 11:29

Alex rider - spy undercover with gadgets. One of the boys from lion witch and wardrobe with sword and shield if allowed. Charlie and choc factory shorts and scruffy clothes plus bar chocolate. James and giant peach similar but with peach!

TulaOfDarkWater · 24/02/2022 11:29

Personally I’d take the approach of here are your 3 options, pick one.

SaffyWall · 24/02/2022 11:33

Can he be a non-fiction character? DS (9) is going as Steve Backshall!

MakeThingsRight · 24/02/2022 11:35

The Boy In The Dress always gets a good laugh here.

MargosKaftan · 24/02/2022 11:43

Ask if he'd rather not dress up and just take a book in. If he wants to dress up, what about:

Wheres Wally (stripy jumper, beanie, glasses and backpack)

Ash Ketchum from Pokemon books (jeans or blue shorts, white t, blue gillet or jacket and red cap, carry a pokeball /picachu toy)

A white with back spots dog onsie and go as a puppy from 101 Dalmatians

PJ and a bandage round his head and go as one of the kids from the Midnight Gang

Dress in brown with green leaves cut out of paper/card on him, carrying 2 shoe boxes decorated to look like little houses, go as the 12 story tree house

When DC1 was in year 4 he announced the space penguins was his favourite book so I sent him in wearing a spaceman dress up costume with a penguin mask and a nerf gun.

At our school any of the kids into football will use it as an excuse to wear football kit! Is there any sport he's into that could be moulded to a book even tennis with a racket or a karate kit?

DS is 8 and he's going as Charlie Bucket, normal clothes and I've ordered a Wonka Bar label/golden ticket from eBay that fits around a bar of galaxy chocolate. Easy!

PeskyRooks · 24/02/2022 12:14

Ds went as war horse once, camouflage trousers and tshirt and cardboard horses ears (that were quickly discarded after assembly! )

May09Bump · 24/02/2022 12:19

We did percy jackson - you can buy a camp half blood hoodie and I bought some wings that you can thread through trainer laces.

longestlurkerever · 24/02/2022 12:26

My 10yo DD and her friends all seem to be going as warrior cats.

GoingBacktoSchool123 · 24/02/2022 12:27

Alex Rider.
Normal clothes plus some dark sunglasses. Coz that’s what all the best spy kids wear.

Crunchymum · 24/02/2022 13:02

We are doing red hoodie / red dress little red riding hood.

And that is about the most effort I've ever put into WBD (DS is going as a muggle IE non uniform and the pre schooler can pick a princess dress!)

I have, however, volunteered for the family reading hour. That feels like it actually had something to do with reading books.

Legoisthebest · 24/02/2022 13:14

This does kind of seem to be missing the point of World Book Day.
If he doesn't have a particular favourite character then dressing up as a random character from a random book that he might not even have read seems silly.
If he does have a favourite book but there isn't really a 'costume' (ie the character is just a regular person or it's a non fiction book) then send him to school with a copy of the book to show to people.

longestlurkerever · 24/02/2022 13:22

I don't really get the hate for world book Day. Yes you could just read books but kids would hardly be talking about it a week in advance and exchanging ideas with their pals if that's all there was to it. If you don't want to go to much effort there are loads of easy options. The only annoying thing is schools take it upon themselves to introduce a slant on the theme at the last minute - eg "favourite character from a book set in Africa" or whatever.

cherryonthecakes · 24/02/2022 19:27

Start with what he wants to wear then find a book that matches that. (I'm assuming that he doesn't like dressing up)

One year my son went as a Minecraft character with a box that fit his head. I know that Minecraft is a computer game with books as merchandise but considering how many kids are in Disney costumes (film) and say that there are Disney books, I see it as no different.

Does he have a favourite character hoodie? I've seen kids go as Pokémon etc

StrangeAddiction · 24/02/2022 20:34

A few years ago my Ds2 went as Billionaire Boy.

A plain white t-shirt, fake money (notes) stuck on, I made a silver dollar sign and stuck it to a chain so it looked like a medallion necklace and got some sparkly letters and wrote billionaire boy across his chest. I've included a picture as it sounds worse than it was Grin

My 10yo DS is either going as Diary Of A Wimpy Kid or Mario (as in Super Mario) as he is in the Guiness World Record book which he has been reading since Christmas.

DD is 8 and going as Hermione from Harry Potter as she got a gryffendor scarf & hat at Christmas.
