Does anyone fancy a thread for suggesting great podcasts? I get through so many so would love a few recommendations. I'll start!

Parenting Hell
Josh widdicombe and rob beckett interview celebrity guest and tell hilarious stories of parenting. Very lighthearted and good fun.

Jaackmaate
I love the episodes where he is interviewing guests, my favourite has to be the episode with ex undercover police officer Peter Blexsley really interesting stuff! He also does episodes just chatting with his mates which don't really interest me but that's just me.

British Scandal
Alice Lavine and Matt Forde retell historical events that caused chaos. Including the coughing major who cheated on millionaire and the story of John Darwin who faked his own death with the help of his wife.

Does anyone want to add any suggestions?! Grin

As the seasons turn is lovely to listen to :)

Another vote for Three Bean Salad here. I absolutely adore it. Pompidou!

You're wrong about - particularly their deep dive on the OJ Simpson case. It's mainly focused on US topics but I still find it fascinating. A shame Mike has left as he and Sarah balanced each other brilliantly.

What the Fuck is going on - Mark Steel. Always a joy when he's on the News Quiz so I was thrilled when I found out he had his own podcast ( although his son makes me standby from time to time)

Today in Focus from The Guardian - usually current affairs and sometimes a larger subject. A recent one on Cressida Dick was very interesting

They Walk among us - British True crime. I have to listen at 1.25 speed though, which brings the narrator's voice up to a bearable speed. Grin

Athletico Mince - if you're a fan of Bob Mortimer's humour ( and Roy Hodgson and Warhammer)

Standard issue - Sarah Millican started this a few years back and it's a reliable mix of feminist related subjects that so far doesn't make me too eye-rolly

  • stabby, not standby!

Another vote for Three Bean Salad and Athletico Mince if you like rambling daft humour.
I also like You're Dead to Me which is a history one with humour.
Red-handed is a brilliant true crime one but probably too much murder for your taste!

The Lady Vanishes about a daughter's search for her mum, an Australian woman called Marion Barter who went missing in 1997. It is absolutely astonishing, I have been riveted to it. I can't even begin to explain the twists and turns and the story is still ongoing as there is a coronial inquest into Marion's disappearance is taking place in Australia right now and the information coming out of it is mind boggling!

Was just coming on to say The Lady Vanishes. I'm addicted and really hope Sally gets the answers she wants.

In a similar vein, Who the Hell is Hamish is good too and about another Australian conman.

BBC ?facebook asked ppl for their favourite podcasts -- Fortunately got named a lot. Every time I listen it's deathly dull. They take a boring subject and drone on & on (carpet colours, anyone?). Even though I have had girl crushes on both presenters in past. Confused

(BBC) I am enjoying "It's a Fair Cop" lately. More or Less . Briefing Room, Profile

The DropOut is also good. I only enjoy 'fraud' podcasts in the crime genre.

I’m finding The Lady Vanishes interesting but is it me or is it very repetitive?

SinisterBumFacedCat · 01/03/2022 23:36

I gave up The Lady Vanishes as it was soooo repetitive but if there have been revelations since I might jump back in. Her poor daughter, the way she was treated so dismissively by police and even her own family in the misplaced name of GDPR gave me the rage. Poor lady deserves better.

bumblenbean · 01/03/2022 23:58

@DedalusBloom I love They Walk Among Us! I know the subject matter is grim but the host is weirdly funny - a sort of dry humour underlying some of the stories even though he basically reads a script rather than giving opinion. There was one where he drily remarked about someone writing a satanic pact and added that they left a space ‘for the demon to sign’ 🤣 which just tickled me in his voice. I googled him and he’s not at all what I expected from his voice!

OP- I’ve just listened to Dr Death which is about a rogue spinal surgeon and how hard it was to stop him. Really interesting, if a little depressing!

Lysianthus · 02/03/2022 00:04

No one has mentioned Tailenders with Greg James. I am not a cricket fan, and I am in my 50s, so probably not the obvious target audience. HOWEVER It's hilarious, and incredibly uplifting. Really recommend.

thepainteddesertcanwait · 02/03/2022 07:14

The Lady Vanishes is a bit repetitive at first when they are giving all the background and exploring different avenues of what "could" have happened to her but without any real evidence or clues (because there really wasn't anything concrete when they began, it was all fairly woolly).

It really takes off later in the series when members of the public start to get involved, undertaking their own research and sharing their findings with Sally and the show who then investigate further. There is a particular turning point when someone discovers a random clue and it all goes insane from there.

There is a sense now that the podcast may actually lead to justice for Marion and a sense of closure for her daughter Sally who has spent all these years wondering how her mum could just disappear off the face of the earth and the police show zero interest in investigating.

Febrier · 02/03/2022 08:52

It's not so much that they cover the same ground as that I think they use the same recordings so often that I get a feeling of de ja vu.

Anyway, despite my grumble I really appreciate the recommendation.
