I have always used a cafeteriree and gone to a Starbucks or whatever for a 'proper coffee'. its just occured to me, that is why people have 'coffee machines' at home. can you recommend a coffee machine that will supply me with proper coffee please. it can't be expensive because I am poor but realise that I will save on take away coffees...it needs to have a short ROI please

and...does it need to be one that you put beans in? or do people have ones that you put ground coffee in and that is good also?

aeropress.com/ makes lovely coffee. You'll need a milk frother as well if that's your taste.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 23/02/2022 21:13

When you go to Starbucks what do you usually order?

@LifeInAHamsterWheel I always have black Americans because I don't like milk, of any sort. but DD has frochamochachocas made with coconut or oat milk. so it's probably better if I have some kind of milk function??

although having said that, she most often has an iced version so we maybe could forgo the milk thingy

@urbanbuddha oh yes, I had forgotten about them, people at work have them! they always look faffy? but it's good coffee? better than a cafeteriree?

I swear by my Nespresso. I have the milk frother, too, but it tastes just as good heated in the microwave, obvs not as aerated... Aldi’s frother has good reviews.

urbanbuddha · 23/02/2022 21:40

Yes, much better than a caffitière. It squeezes the juice out of the coffee. As it were. No more faff than any other coffee maker really. That's an American website - you'll be able to get one locally.

urbanbuddha · 23/02/2022 21:43

Ask one of your colleagues if you can try it.

C8H10N4O2 · 23/02/2022 21:48

Sage machines are not cheap but mine would have to be dragged from my cold, dead hands.

If you drink coffee mainly black a good machine with variable grind and pressure management really makes a huge difference. If you drink your coffee with a ton of frothy gunk and syrups - just buy a jar if instant.

Not that I feel strongly you understand Grin

@urbanbuddha we don't go into office any more Sad

@SparePantsAndLego is Nespresso with pods? I'm not sure I want to have to get pods. I can buy beans in the local shop but where do you buy pods?

Save up your money and get a Delonghi bean to cup with a milk frother that goes in the fridge, second hand if you like. If you can't be bothered to save up you might as well stick with the cafetiere IMHO.

Hyggemood · 23/02/2022 21:56

I use one of these- www.johnlewis.com/bialetti-moka-express-hob-espresso-maker/p1407523

Highly recommended

Lasagnaface · 23/02/2022 22:05

The pods are terrible for the environment, and can get quite expensive. You get imitation nespresso pods in most supermarkets.

We have the Nespresso thing with the pods. I actually prefer the drip coffee machines. I miss the caffetières, actually.

What I would say is that, now that I have my coffees at home, I am not buying frothy coffees in cafés. And Starbucks make revolting coffee, also.

Xtraincome · 23/02/2022 22:06

We only use dripper filters, V60 brand usually.
We also have a chemex dripper for large quantities. You get all the notes in the coffee. I think aeropress gets the same results. Sorry for short sentences, puppy asleep on my lap Grin

Love my Nespresso Touch...as does my husband and 3 teens!

madamegazelle1 · 23/02/2022 22:10

Definitely a Sage coffee machine- not cheap but amazing coffee machines

ivykaty44 · 23/02/2022 22:11

I’d just look on market place and get a nesspresso machine

And a jug milk frother

Cheap as chips

Make sure the nesspresso isn’t the new different pods - you can get many generic pods then

Seriously less mess and easy to work

Cherryblossoms85 · 23/02/2022 22:15

If you Ike americanos get a Melitta filter coffee machine. Morphy Richards also makes a nice one.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 23/02/2022 22:21

V60 or aeropress and some decent coffee. Get a hand grinder for grinding beans...better quality for the price unless you want to spend a lot more on an electric grinder

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 23/02/2022 22:24

To be honest I think if you're used to a cafetière you should stick to that and upgrade your coffee! I use one in work and the difference in using good quality coffee is amazing. I have a Nespresso machine at home but unfortunately my favourite pods are one of the most expensive ones!! (Illy) I also have a milk frother and this is definitely worth the money if you like that sort of coffee. Bit for what you're describing honestly I think you'd be better off treating yourself to some really nice coffee (or beans and then buy a grinder to grind them yourself, I'm too lazy for that!)
My boss recently got a Sage bean to cup machine and he's given me free rein to use it anytime I want. It's honestly too much of a faff for me! And it cost a fortune! I'm happy to use his posh coffee in the house is a good bit a lot better

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 23/02/2022 22:25

Don't know what happened at the end of my post?! What I was trying to say is I like to take the beans he grinds and use them in my French press! You get my drift...
