Can anyone recommend a childrens book about not changing who you are

My fabulous nearly 7yo goddaughter has, as a result of being bullied, decided that the best way to get people to like her is to change how she looks, speaks and dresses and I’m looking for a book that basically says you’re perfect as you are because shes fucking brilliant and I’m heartbroken she feels this way.

She loves books and responds to messages in them, she has a 3.5yo sister so absolutely fine if it’s aimed at younger then her as they can read together

I know this won’t be to everyone’s taste but it will be good for her

Thank you

Julian is a mermaid by Jessica Love.

It’s absolutely beautiful - a work of art as well as having a great message about not being ashamed of who you are.

Just Like You by Jan Fearnley to read to her sister. All are different but all loved.

Be More Bernard.
It turned out that the other bunnies weren't that keen on carrots either.

@Whatwouldscullydo

I wouldn't recommend goodnight stories fir rebel girls as one of the stories is actually about a male child...
Thanks for the heads up!

The Princess and the shoe.

Its about a princess who is told to look pretty, not to get mucky, find a prince etc.

She doesn't like that stuff and decides to run a race (which she wins) and comes to the conclusion she can be herself.

A bad case of stripes by David Shannon also has this message

I want to be a cowgirl? It’s a picture book- about being yourself

"I don't want to be a good girl-
Good girls have no fun.
I can't play quiet games indoors,
I love the rain and sun.
I don't want to be a girly girl
Who likes to sit and chat.
I just want to be a cowgirl, Daddy,
What's so wrong with that?"

Readerofwords · 21/02/2022 23:31

Oh, your poor goddaughter Sad

Dandylion by Lizzie Finlay would be perfect. It was well loved in this house.

Hey I've just seen your post so I'm a little later than everyone else but my wife has just released a brand new kids book and in the book there is 4 different dinosaurs who are completely different but the best of friends. I'll attach the link below and maybe you could take a look for yourself. Thank you for reading :)

The marmalade panda! Its aimed more at younger ones I think though x

Chardonnay73 · 04/03/2022 12:19

I’ve heard good things about this book
www.faytheandthefearstone.com/the-book/
The author has been going into local schools and doing workshops on self belief which have been very well received.

ThePug · 04/03/2022 12:23

Sort of the opposite of what you specified as the character changes how he looks, but my son loves Rhinocorn Rules - Ron the rhino doesn't like the normal rhino rules (being grumpy, charging at other animals) so one day he shows his true colours by painting himself with berries and he ends up looking a bit like a rainbow unicorn. The other rhinos then realise this is more fun so they come up with new rules (be yourself, make friends & have fun).

Coy Mathis is male yes, but that story also sends out the message that the OP was looking for, which was to be who you are and don't change.
DoNotTouchTheWater · 04/03/2022 12:31

There are loads of books with this kind of theme. Protagonists are often people who don’t ‘fit in’ and the stories are about how their difference is the thing that makes them great (and just what the situation around them requires).

For example, hiccup in the how to train your dragon books is mocked and ostracised for not being the right kind of Viking. But ultimately he is exactly what the vikings need. They need to become more like him to survive.
