I don’t work

Hi, I was wondering what your initial opinion would be on someone if you asked what they did for a living and they replied “oh, I don’t work”.

Person in question is mid twenties, dresses what would appear to be nice (designer shoes & bag) and well groomed, drives a mid range car, no kids, partner in a secure public services job but probably not earning £££ due to it being public, never seen house and don’t know if they rent or own but don’t live with parents. Seem to spend a lot of their days in the gym and eating out etc. You also know that they have been to uni and have a MA degree.

Inheritance?

Duracellbunnywannabe · 20/02/2022 12:37

I would would be envious. I would wonder if they are bored or happy.

Sannnyyy · 20/02/2022 12:37

I have a neighbour who fits most of that criteria and who told me in passing that she doesn't work. I don't know her at all really, so I didn't ask any questions. I was mildly curious at the time I guess but didn't give it another thought after the conversation.

User48751490 · 20/02/2022 12:38

Could easily have paid off mortgage. It's not impossible. Gives plenty room for lunch out most days.

TheChronicalTales · 20/02/2022 12:44

Probably wonder if they’re bored? Or in debt

TheChronicalTales · 20/02/2022 12:44

Or maybe come from money

ClariceQuiff · 20/02/2022 12:46

It's not something I'd have a strong opinion about.

RoastedFerret · 20/02/2022 12:48

I'd presume they did OnlyFans but were too embarrassed to say.

AladdinPrincess999 · 20/02/2022 12:49

Only Fans. Grin

RedskyThisNight · 20/02/2022 12:49

I would wonder how they spent their time. If it was literally going to the gym and eating out, I'd consider it a waste of their education.

oldestmumaintheworld · 20/02/2022 12:51

It depends on the person. Young person, I'd be inclined to be judgemental and think 'What century are you living in and what are you doing with your brain?'
Older person, I'd think got kids. Person my age (really ancient) I'd think probably retired with nice pension.
I might also wonder about their mental health. Some people struggle with working if their condition is severe.
If I'm honest though, I do find it weird when women living in 2022 don't work. So many women worked so hard to allow us access to education and equal pay. We need to treasure that.

pinkprettyroses · 20/02/2022 12:52

Maybe inheritance? Unsure why you're too bothered though.

L40Postcode · 20/02/2022 12:54

I’d assume they have either sold a business, had an inheritance, financial compensation for a medical incident or accident, won the lottery, or they are doing some kind of work they’d rather not talk about.

kissmelittleass · 20/02/2022 12:55

I wouldn't think anything tbh not my business

DiddyHeck · 20/02/2022 12:58

I'm a nosy bugger but even I wouldn't think anything really. Why do you ask?

didshedidntshe · 20/02/2022 13:00

I'd assume they came from money and I'd be jealous, but I'd probably judge if they did nothing with their time, like volunteering or something like that

Totalwasteofpaper · 20/02/2022 13:02

I’d think “that’s nice for them…” and because I am snoopy 😂 I’d wonder how and run through likelihood of the all the options @L40Postcode listed

Cailleach · 20/02/2022 13:23

Drug dealer
Pimp/madam/prostitute
Does actually work but strictly cash in hand so doesn't want anyone to know
Came into a massive inheritance/rich parents who sub them
Lottery winner
Content to sponge off partner for now for who knows what reasons

Moonface123 · 20/02/2022 13:24

l would think good for them, not a slave to the system.

OhItsSpicyy · 20/02/2022 13:25

I’d say either Only Fans/ Cam Girl or disabled/health problems that aren’t obvious

YogaLite · 20/02/2022 13:28

My sil never worked.
Her oh did, but all the day-to-day expenses were funded by her parents, Inc their dcs uni fees.

EmmaH2022 · 20/02/2022 13:28

"Lucky" would be my first thought

My second thought would be to wonder if it was permanent or just they were having time off.

If you are wondering if people would think badly of it, I wouldn't.

CorrBlimeyGG · 20/02/2022 13:30

I'd remind myself that we never know what is going on in other people's lives.

BirdTurd · 20/02/2022 13:43

Caring responsibilities or chronic illness
Inheritance
Divorce settlement
Trust fund or family money personal allowance

Dividends from a family company
Lucrative voluntary redundancy or acrimonious professional dispute pay-off
Sold a business
Buy to Let portfolio
Lottery win

A combination of the above.

DoctorManhattan · 20/02/2022 13:58

Why have any opinion? On this day and age there are numerous reasons why someone would not work (or not work traditional 9-5) and still appear to be well off. Good for them.

My friend is early 40s and now retired. Earned a very good wage in his previous role and then received a very large inheritance on top of what he already earned. He looks younger than he is too so I’m sure lots of people wonder why how he doesn’t work yet has expensive cars and house etc. There’s always a reason.
