Sky tv-price rise again! Alternatives??

Sick of sky tv increases. A couple of weeks ago I negotiated a small decrease when they put my contract price up again. Then yesterday they sent me an email about price rises in April. Plus I see they stuck a £10 admin fee on my account for recent negotiation which I done online.

DH and DS (nearly age 4) watch a few channels on the sky. I only watch Netflix really. So I'll have a battle on my hands cancelling it. And maybe I'm being unreasonable just because I don't use it.

Any suggestions for other services we could switch to?

Thanks all. Great advice on this thread that I'm reading out to DH. I think he's just so used to sky, the layout etc that he hates the thought of change. He's agreed that we cancel it and see how we get on. I think he'll live in hope that sky will beg us to to stay with a great deal.

So we have sky, Netflix and prime I didn't even think about using prime for tv.

We have just changed from Sky , we now have all ours now from BT , £68 a month for BT sport, Netflix, Bt TV , broadband 50 megabits , Now Tv phone line , we don't use the house phone at all but we have kept it for my elderly Mum.

Now tv for Sky channels. Sky movies is cheaper and payable monthly. They also do a lot of deals when you cancel. Just remember to keep an eye on what's finishing when.
Apple tv is £4.99 a month and again easily cancelled. You can do a month by month.
Netflix through Sky is cheaper but if you want to get rid of Sky, you might just as well pay monthly.
Disney+ pay monthly and a lot of choice. A lot of older programmes as well so that's good.
I watch a lot of tv. Negotiated Sky down to a good price but if they keep putting it up sneakily I'll be cancelling. They already added 6 months to my contract when I removed something in December....I did cancel multiroom and went to now tv with Disney and Netflix. Much cheaper!

@AnotherEmma

👍
it took blooming 40 mins on hold because it can't be done over the app but it's done - cancelled. Feel happy about keeping that money in my account going forward.

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

DH was made redundant so I attempted to cancel it. They kept offering it for less until I agreed.

BoodleBug51 · 21/02/2022 19:02

Our Sky bill is eye watering, but we've got a main box and 2 mini boxes, broadband, 2 mobiles and we have a stupid amount of Apps. We were at £150 a month at one point, but got it down to just over £110 with threatening to cancel. We're also rural so no cable or alternatives are available.

We don't smoke, drink or have many luxuries so our TV is one to us.

I find they're generally quite helpful if you say it's too much and you've found a better offer elsewhere.

ItsAlwaysThere · 21/02/2022 19:10

We were looking at getting Sky Glass... I'm being put off now!

cluecu · 21/02/2022 19:12

We've been with Now tv for a few years and every year they say my bill will go up after the 12 month contract passes. Every year I phone up and they waiver the increase. Been really happy with them so far and their broadband seems to be a lost faster and reliable than what we had with sky. They are the same company I think but much different experience.

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 21/02/2022 19:13

We pay about £60-70 a month for virgin and the only reason we keep the TV and landline is that it makes our 200mb broadband cheaper to have a package. We almost never watch the TV as we use Netflix, Disney and prime or iPlayer.

Bowlofhotslop · 21/02/2022 19:25

We have just renegotiated £24 a month for the standard sky package with Netflix included. It’s all the extra channels that cost a fortune. The standard package with a skyQ box is pretty reasonable I think and better than my parents deal with Virgin.

ENoeuf · 21/02/2022 20:03

@ithoughtisawapuddycat we pay £50 for the super fast broadband and weekend calls.

Holothane · 21/02/2022 20:18

He likes the sports but I don’t care.

Meakai · 22/02/2022 08:51

If anyone is ready to change broadband provider then Now Broadband have an offer for unlimited fibre at £20 plus you can add Now Entertainment (lots of Sky channels) for £5.99 pm. I think you can also add Now movies for another £5.99 once you join. The beauty of that is being able to watch Now Tv in different rooms.

Sky tv-price rise again! Alternatives??
HunterHearstHelmsley · 22/02/2022 09:00

I pay around £60 a month for subscription services, its actually split with another household so we pay £30 each. There's always something to watch!

Now TV Entertainment & Movies
Now TV Sports mobile pass
BT Sports through EE
Disney+
Netflix
Prime

Then freeview for live TV and catch up services too.

Onetraumaatatimeplease · 22/02/2022 09:42

I've just been out and bought a free sat box. I realised I'm paying a fortune for a record button. They are charging me 5£ so I can watch Netflix. Wtf. I've got a smart tv. They are charging me 15£ for one multi room box that works intermittently. They are charging me 5£ a month for a broadband boost that doesn't work since I upgraded the internet.
I've figured out that I can have now tv (already got that in all rooms) Netflix (already got that) Disney plus in all rooms for 7.99 a month and brittbox for 7.99 a month.
I hate that you can't speak to a human when you phone up. We had a broadband outage in my area a while ago, it was down for three days, they gave no updates I had to join fucking Twitter just to find out what was going on. Ridiculous so sky can fuck off.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/02/2022 10:31

Is Now TV HD?

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 22/02/2022 11:55

Placemarking with interest. I’m in a similar situation, looking for a much cheaper option. I’ll give Sky a ring later this week.

yoshiblue · 22/02/2022 12:40

@ithoughtisawapuddycat We are the same, have Virgin tv as it is cheaper in the package than without. I'm currently paying £29 pm for 200mb broadband, tv and phone so it may be worth a call if yours is £60/£70.

Madcats · 22/02/2022 13:16

We have Amazon Prime (and Fire sticks) and a Freesat supported by a big disc Humax.
DH would rather go to the pub to watch rugby and just about copes with Formula 1 highlights.

OP maybe get your DH to go on a Radio Times app/website. You can filter to see what is on Freesat. Also get him to keep a diary of what he was watching.

We had Sky when i was on maternity leave and dropped it when we realised that i was only really watching Grey's Anatomy.

MrsDThomas · 22/02/2022 15:39

Im not bothered about sky. Id cancel but DH pays for it and he (and 3 kids) watch a lot of football plus BT sport. He never goes out, doesn’t drink, smoke nor does drugs so im not one to tell him to cancel it.

InglouriousBasterd · 22/02/2022 18:10

I’ve cancelled Sky today as the costs were becoming ridiculous with the latest rises. I waited since Saturday on live chat, finally got someone who offered me 2 quid below what I will be paying with the price rise plus a 20 quid admin fee - saving me a grand total of 90p a month.

I’ve cancelled it all for now and hope they’ll come back with a better offer.

I was looking at the manhattan freesat box as the only thing I do like is recording / pausing etc - this sounds ridiculous but if I have sky, I won’t need an aerial will I? Does anyone have it?

Lightning020 · 22/02/2022 18:29

I have Sky Q so apparently it means I have to return all the equipment if I cancel. Including the satellite!

Sky Plus is fine if you cancel as then you get to keep all the equipment.

I would just buy the TVSat if I convince them I want to cancel. However I still need a satellite dish for that.

RovenderKitt · 22/02/2022 18:30

Looking at doing the same with Virgin. Effectively paying £70 a month for the broadband, which is very fast here. Every time we renegotiate the price down it gradually creeps back up again.

Meakai · 22/02/2022 19:44

Just to note that if you change from Sky Q to freesat you might need to change the LNB which is on the actual dish. Some of the older freesat boxes don’t work with Sky Q dishes
