What Else Can I Do to Get Ready For The Storm?

Shouldbeworkingnotreadingtalk · 17/02/2022 18:40

Wasn't overly worried (still aren't tbh) but thought back to 1987, and decided to get a bit organised tonight in case of power cut tomorrow.

I'm asking for tips, or things I've missed that would be useful. So far I have:

Charged torches, batteries, will charge pc, phones, power banks tonight.

Got out big flask to put hot water in for hot drinks all day.

Will shower / wash hair tonight in case nothing working tomorrow.

Got a frozen batch meal out of the freezer that can be re heated over the camping stove in one saucepan.

Got camping stove, gas, out of garage.

Put candles, matches, all in an east to find place.

(Love being prepared - will make a master list and laminate it I expect GrinGrinGrinGrin)

Appreciation in advance for you thoughts and tips.

We are used to storms where I live. The worst storm I remember knocked out power for several days. We live in the countryside outside a small town. When we got our power on again. We could see lots of facebook messages about where to get help, places to get hot food ect. People in town offering us help. I am sure the people sharing them thought they were being helpful. But this was not useful to myself or my neighbours that had no power and a very weak mobile phone signal we could not get online to see the messages of help. So please if you want to make sure friends know about the help on offer give them a ring or drive out and let them know.

"Moist towelettes"? MOIST FUCKING TOWELETTES?

Who in the name of Margo Leadbetter has moist towelettes in their life?🤔

We keep cheap baby wipes in our glove boxes as a norm. Helps with those takeaways (ie chicken and chips). My biggest find being a new mum 24 years ago….

@JeffThePilot

Who is in your trusted network nearby. Who would you feel able to rely upon. What skills do you have to offer. What happens if you have no internet and you need to know essential life saving skills as there's no power and no emergency services and you cant goggle what to do? Who do you trust? Who is a fucking liability? Which little old lady living on your road is most likely to try and eat your brains?

Sadly, I’m the liability. My zombie apocalypse plan is basically to sacrifice myself to save others, my imminent death would be inevitable anyway.

My family and I were discussing this once and we all agreed the same.

In the event of a zombie apocalypse we would just surrender ourselves to the zombies.

Trying to survive just looks exhausting.

expat101 · 18/02/2022 07:38

Eek really? I was trying to add the quote to my post and it won’t happen..

I’m a really big believer we all have something to add to our community. I rely on neighbours to watch out for vehicles coming and going who shouldn’t be here. That helps a lot!

We shall fight off the zombie apocalypse and we shall wave off Eunice with a fresh moist towelette.

Let's start a collections to send some to the Russia/Ukraine border. Everyone needs moist towelettes in times of bother.

@PurpleCarpets

We've just been working on it. On the whole my view is always to err on the side of safety, and it could get pretty bad over the coming days.

Water (four gallons for four of us for drinking and sanitation)
Food (I always have in stock one month supply of non perishable food)
hand crank radio
Torch
First aid kit
Extra batteries
Whistle (to signal for help)
Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place, not during the storm)
Moist towelettes, rubbish bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
Pliers (to turn off utilities)
Manual tin opener (for food)
Local maps
Mobile phone with chargers and a backup battery
Cash
Important documents, insurance policies, ID and bank account records saved electronically and in a waterproof, portable container
Sleeping bags
Complete change of clothing
Fire extinguisher
Matches in a waterproof container
Personal hygiene items
Paper cups, plates, paper towels and plastic utensils
Paper and pencil
Books, games, puzzles

I honestly don't know whether to be incredibly disturbed by your prepping or impressed!
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 18/02/2022 08:16

Good effort on the list, but where are the meds? You need a back up of your prescription meds and some painkillers and a wide spectrum AB. Contacts if you wear then, or a back up of pair of grasses.

And wine, but that might be just me.

😂 My friend and I were having this exact conversation on Sunday.

Do you think this will really help in gale force winds? I don’t know what to do with mine (also empty). It’s literally the only thing I’m worrying about. 😂
RedToothBrush · 18/02/2022 09:01

We have the whole list in the house. (Im not nuts. Its stuff DH needs for his hobbies anyway - he does hill walking and stuff. But its worth having in just in case)

An act of utmost bravery and foresight. we did the same Grin

I hope you're added wine to that. It's the worst about the zombie apocalypse, no wine and no Netflix.
RedToothBrush · 18/02/2022 09:14

We have lots of gin, lots of wine and a home brewing kit.
DVDs, a laptop dvd drive and laptop charger.

We will be FINNNNNEEEE.

Not entirely sure how helpful that will be:

Tigersonvaseline · 18/02/2022 09:24

Moist towelettes are the stand out from that list also.

However , with few water amenities I think they would be pretty essential!

User639710 · 18/02/2022 09:52

DH uses something called bed bath wipes when he goes off on his outdoorsy hobbies for any length of time, I think they must be similar to moist towelettes.

ABitOfAShitShow · 18/02/2022 10:42

Well I don’t think it’s fully kicked in yet in south London but I can report that my wheelie bins haven’t blown off yet. 😬

Goldenphoenix · 18/02/2022 12:48

Sure I read up the thread about turning glass top patio furniture upside down. Mentioned it to OH who poo poohed the idea - yep it just flipped over and now have a garden full of glass. Bugger. Heed that warning folks, wind is vicious here in Northants, am watching neighbours tiles fly off and don't think our shed is going to survive

Sobeyondthehills · 18/02/2022 13:04

It starting to calm down here in surrey,

Our ducks enclosure flew up and over into neighbouring garden even the bricks on top didn't weigh it down.
Terrifying day.
Fortunately I had made the decision to grab the ducks in,into our porch a few hours before this happened.
Their empty hutch flew up and Flipped over.

goMe46 · 18/02/2022 22:02

We were in the red zone by the way.

Thank you for the warning about glass patio table- I was out there at 7:30am turning it over onto the grass and weighing it down.
It was horrible feeling out of control of some things today.
