What Else Can I Do to Get Ready For The Storm?

Shouldbeworkingnotreadingtalk · 17/02/2022 18:40

Wasn't overly worried (still aren't tbh) but thought back to 1987, and decided to get a bit organised tonight in case of power cut tomorrow.

I'm asking for tips, or things I've missed that would be useful. So far I have:

Charged torches, batteries, will charge pc, phones, power banks tonight.

Got out big flask to put hot water in for hot drinks all day.

Will shower / wash hair tonight in case nothing working tomorrow.

Got a frozen batch meal out of the freezer that can be re heated over the camping stove in one saucepan.

Got camping stove, gas, out of garage.

Put candles, matches, all in an east to find place.

(Love being prepared - will make a master list and laminate it I expect GrinGrinGrinGrin)

Appreciation in advance for you thoughts and tips.

I'm moving house tomorrow 😐

edwinbear · 17/02/2022 20:08

@jerrywesterby Shock can’t imagine how stressed you must feel. Moving house is stressful enough without having to worry about the weather as well. Really, really hope it goes OK for you.

jerrywesterby · 17/02/2022 20:10

@edwinbear I'm ok actually... what will be will be... the universe like to challenge me that's for sure 😂

Iputthetrampintrampoline · 17/02/2022 20:10

Make sure anyone who needs emergency help is on the priority registar,I had to do this recently for an elderly friend who has a stair life and nebulizer. I use a cpap machine so although I could manage without that I really would like not to have to.

Tigersonvaseline · 17/02/2022 20:13

Just seen sting jet is what they are worried about.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/02/2022 20:15

Secured the bins, took the garden furniture inside.

Not sure what else I can do.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/02/2022 20:17

@Longcovid21

Keep any pets in. Move your car away from your roof if possible
If I move it away from my roof it will be by someone else's. The joys of living in a crowded city.
RedToothBrush · 17/02/2022 20:17

We have a zombie apocalypse box. (yes really)

We will crack open if its bad.

Legoandloldolls · 17/02/2022 20:18

I hate it when people shoehorn being prepaired to panic buying. I always have candles in the house and matches. Much like other preppers I dont need to rush out for anything. Neither I bulk buy anything. I dont need to scour Tesco at 8pm before a storm because I pick up a few candles on every trip to IKEA. If the power goes out I'm about as ready as I always am. I bought camping lights in the sale last year too.

I'm glad I'm not travelling. Dh landed in a storm last year. No thanks to that

Missnataliex · 17/02/2022 20:20

100mph winds? Just a typical winter here in Scotland! All jokes aside, stay safe everyone! Thanks

GestationalDiabetes · 17/02/2022 20:23

I’ve charged power bank and bought ham/ cheese/ bread in case can’t cook with power cut as we’ve already had two yesterday and today . We thought of turning the trampoline upside down just in case but it’s quite heavy so haven’t bothered so far .

PurpleCarpets · 17/02/2022 20:34

We've just been working on it. On the whole my view is always to err on the side of safety, and it could get pretty bad over the coming days.

Water (four gallons for four of us for drinking and sanitation)
Food (I always have in stock one month supply of non perishable food)
hand crank radio
Torch
First aid kit
Extra batteries
Whistle (to signal for help)
Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place, not during the storm)
Moist towelettes, rubbish bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
Pliers (to turn off utilities)
Manual tin opener (for food)
Local maps
Mobile phone with chargers and a backup battery
Cash
Important documents, insurance policies, ID and bank account records saved electronically and in a waterproof, portable container
Sleeping bags
Complete change of clothing
Fire extinguisher
Matches in a waterproof container
Personal hygiene items
Paper cups, plates, paper towels and plastic utensils
Paper and pencil
Books, games, puzzles

Iputthetrampintrampoline · 17/02/2022 20:35

I don;t think we are going to have it as bad here as other places but just incase I advise Yorkshire folk to get their big coats out!!

JuliaSways · 17/02/2022 20:35

We had our power knocked out yesterday (near Bolton) for 3 hours but luckily it was still daylight. We have a gas fire and a gas hob so could manage. There was lots of panicking on local Facebook groups but the community pulled together and the pub offered to provide hot water for the elderly and any babies in need of bottles. It was lovely and luckily it wasn't needed in the end.

As for tomorrow... Trampoline extra battened down. Rabbit hutch secured. All candles and torches still in easy reach from yesterday, but will grab hot water bottles and make sure the kids have their fluffy socks out.

I'm at work tomorrow morning, local but have to drive through a heavily wooded area to get there and DS's school is on the edge of another wood which is worrying. Will be putting my big girl pants on for the school run.

This is insane
CosmicComfort · 17/02/2022 21:03
@CosmicComfort that's rubbish, hope your long day goes ok. I've got 3 cats so I'm locking the cat flap once they're in tonight. I dont want them getting blown away.
@Tiredmum100 I’m sure it will be fine thanks. It’s my first week as Ward Manager so the buck sort of stops with me now😱🤣 DH and I have agreed the cat won’t be allowed out tomorrow so being the contrary fairy she is, she will probably spend the day sitting by the cat flap despite the fact she hates wind🤣

Stay safe💐

BeKind2022 · 17/02/2022 21:04

We live on top of a hill and face west so no protection. 😱

We have a wood burner so will heat with that if the electricity goes. It has a large flat top and in the past we have heated food in a saucepan on it. Just an idea others may find useful.

Bins are in the garage - garden furniture pulled inside too.

Power banks, laptops and phones charged.

May rustle up some soup first thing as that would heat easily on the wood burner.

Thinking about it could probably cook baked potatoes in foil in the wood burner ashes too.

Sn0tnose · 17/02/2022 21:07

This is insane It’s always better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I’ve got a gas cooker so will still have a way to cook and get hot water bottles if the electric goes. Lots of food and bottled water and I always have a supply of candles, matches and torches. Apart from DH driving to and from work tomorrow, my biggest concern is my roof coming off. My home was not one built by master craftsmen and I often hear creaks overhead if the wind is bad.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/02/2022 21:11

can i ask what is the point of a lap top being charged? if there is no power surely there is no internet?

CornishTiger · 17/02/2022 21:22

@MrsLargeEmbodied I can hotspot from work mobile ( if mast doesn’t go down).

orangetriangle · 17/02/2022 21:26

Thanks for this tip. DD needs a stairlift to get around so I have now done this. Wouldn't thought of that before.

BonnesVacances · 17/02/2022 21:36

We've dug out our camping cooking equipment from the garage in case we are off grid. We'll have plenty of candles, a few torches and we are all charging our devices. Hopefully we won't need any of it but we'll be very grateful if we do.
