Just been out the roads are mad busy, ditto shops. Battening down the hatches I guess. Our house all electric so we're stuffed if the power goes down we're in a red area. But we do have candles, matches and torches so will be hunkering down with a book .

Anyone better prepared

No but you have made me think about checking the batteries in the torch ty

Brahumbug · 17/02/2022 18:10

DH has checked the generator is working, not a huge one, but enough to keep fridge and freezers going. We have paraffin for the lamps as well as battery lights running off the leisure batteries.

DinkBoo · 17/02/2022 18:15

I made sure our big powerbank was charged yesterday, we have a massive cache of rechargeable betteries that were all charged recently (from Christmas fairy lights), laptops fully charged, phones currently charging, dishwasher run earlier, we have a massive stash of candles and a couple of very powerful camping lanterns. And fingers tightly crossed.

HollowTalk · 17/02/2022 18:15

Make sure your phones and laptops etc are fully charged.

Raera · 17/02/2022 18:17

We are in amber and have a motorhome on the drive we can move into if needed, yes very lucky I know!
I'd be filling any flasks with boiling water for hot drinks if all electric.

Akire · 17/02/2022 18:19

Yes battery radio, batteries torches candles and camp stove. Was going charge iPad up but no good if wifi can’t work as nothing will work.

Akire · 17/02/2022 18:20

Oh and be filling kitchen bin with water so can flush loo as in tower block and our water pump doesn’t work in power cut.

etulosba · 17/02/2022 18:20

That reminds me, I must go and check the generator.

VanLife · 17/02/2022 18:20

I'm not prepared at all

CornishTiger · 17/02/2022 18:21

Portable radio charging. As are phones- might find my old tablet and download things to watch.

Will find the torch and lanterns in a min and place so they are accessible with spare batteries.

Garden has been tidied. Going to ask DH to tuck away washing line and lay down bin.

Grocery order just came.

What else is there to do. Oh Flask for morning coffee. Fully expecting power cuts.

CornishTiger · 17/02/2022 18:21

Might do the laundry now too!

edwinbear · 17/02/2022 18:22

Secured the garden furniture and bins.
Devices charged.
Battery packs charged.
Vape charged Grin
Torch/candles/matches located and put in an easy to find place.
Non perishable food supplies checked.

Kids very nonchalant about it, but I remember watching my much loved canoe blow off our garden pond and across the fields in 1987!

Chishnfips · 17/02/2022 18:23

I sent dh out to get teabags

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 17/02/2022 18:24

I haven’t done anything!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/02/2022 18:34

Nope, never had a power cut due to weather where I live! I'm going out to work tomorrow and I can pop to the supermarket nearby if need be.

WingBingo · 17/02/2022 18:37

Red warnings where I am too.

School is closed and we are all staying home. I love reading about precautions. They are all excellent ideas but I never get around to doing any of them.

A580Hojas · 17/02/2022 18:37

Where do you all live? I'm in London should I be worried? Shock

Pandoh · 17/02/2022 18:37

Torch yes, nope to candles- fire service are going to be bloody busy so don't want to chance it. I suppose the plus of the worst of the wind being tomorrow morning is that it should be light at least. Let's hope hospital sites etc have tested their jennys...

Chocoqueen · 17/02/2022 18:38

Moved garden furniture and bbq into the kitchen/diner, located our torches and matches but will get candles diwn tomorrow. Tablet and phone charging though tablet won't get Internet - good point pp had about downloading things to watch. Been and got some ready made formula for DD too, and a few cold meat bits/potato salad so we can have a sort of proper dinner tomorrow night if no power for cooking. Filling up a few bottles of water too just in case. We're only in an Amber area and not particularly rural but fully expecting some sort of power cut/outage.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/02/2022 18:39

I'm in Derbyshire and not worried. If I lived rurally I might prepare more but I live a 15 minute walk from 2 superstores so I can just go there if I need to.
maddiemookins16mum · 17/02/2022 18:40

Crikey, I’ve done nothing. We do have tea lights and torches though.

GalesThisMorning · 17/02/2022 18:41

All schools and colleges in my area closed- that includes my place of work. Phones and laptops charged, shows for DS downloaded, ereader charged, plenty of candles and matches and wood for the log burner. Stuff in the garden secured, and we have a gas stove so can cook and boil water

We lose power every year so I'm always somewhat prepared.

Etinoxaurus · 17/02/2022 18:41

Hmm good call. I’d been mithering about having a bath and I think I Will to allow the tank to refill in case of outages. I noticed the battery radio was crackly so I’ll change them now. And although it’s not particularly cold I’ll put the heating on as when the house gets cold it’s really slow to warm up again. Good call about laptops and no wifi, but still worth charging as I can use it via phone.
We have scaffolding up- no tarps thank goodness 😬

RoseAndRose · 17/02/2022 18:41

Charging up power banks is a good idea, especially if rural/semi rural and more dependent on overhead power lines

FourChimneys · 17/02/2022 18:42

Devices charged, torch batteries checked, laundry done. Garden checked and secured. Elderly neighbours checked and will check again tomorrow. Moved some work online and can postpone if necessary. It is my own business so up to me to choose what I do.

Adult DC has been told to work from home and to not worry if a power cut means they can't work.
