Would you go into London tonight?

It's about an hour by train from here. I'd be gutted not to go, have tickets for a show, but I'm worried about getting home.

All calm here ATM and I know the SE can make a drama of weather the rest of the country sees as normal but according to BBC news we're expecting worse than the SE has seen in decades, but not until 5am tomorrow, when hopefully I'll be all tucked up in bed.

I hate to make a fuss over nothing, but otoh would feel really stupid if I end up stranded because trains aren't turning. I don't have any real alternative

Yes, I would go, it's tomorrow that the weather is supposed to be bad.

Louisianagumbo · 17/02/2022 13:11

I would be going. We were forecast awful weather for yesterday afternoon. It ended up not even raining.

Crunchymum · 17/02/2022 13:12

I'm central London and weather warning is I place from 3am.

NuffSaidSam · 17/02/2022 13:12

I'm going into London tonight, but via tube, not train.

I suppose it depends how it is very local to you, or more specifically how it is is on the train line you'll use.

It's windy, but perfectly fine in London at the moment.

Crunchymum · 17/02/2022 13:12

In*

MinorWomensWhiplash1 · 17/02/2022 13:13

I’m in London, it’s a bit windy but fine.

DetailMouse · 17/02/2022 13:14

@MinorWomensWhiplash1

I’m in London, it’s a bit windy but fine.
Well yes, the storm's not due until early hours tomorrow. This is the calm before the storm...

Are you going home after? If so then yes I probably would.

DetailMouse · 17/02/2022 13:26

Yes, that's my worry, whether I'll be able to get home

SquirmOfEels · 17/02/2022 13:30

The wind is currently predicted to start ramping up in London from about 3am, and are forecast to be gusting >55 (ie worse than yesterday) between about 11:00-14:00

I think you'll be OK this evening, though of course you could be unlucky more or less anywhere

spacehardware · 17/02/2022 13:32

You'd better check trains aren't disrupted already in anticipation of suspended / altered services tomorrow OP. I think some are reducing their operations

Cissyandflora · 17/02/2022 13:42

I wouldn’t think twice. Definitely go! I’m in London though.

NeedWineNow · 17/02/2022 13:45

I'm in London in the City at the moment, and have just been out to get lunch. It's bright and calm. We're having drinks and dinner after work this evening, but me and DH have said that the last train we want to aim for is the 9.25. Nothing later than that. We're SE Trains too, and saw that they are already cancelling services for tomorrow, so I'm glad I can WFH (DH doesn't work Fridays) and we can batten down the hatches. We've got plenty of food and wine!

fabulousathome · 17/02/2022 13:45

I would too. There's so many high buildings in London that the wind is blocked (a bit).

balloonsintrees · 17/02/2022 13:47

I would go tonight, we are travelling the length of the country overnight down to London and all of that is running ok.
You will be able to get there and back today, wouldn't chance it tomorrow night tho

Akire · 17/02/2022 13:48

Yes from 3am so tonight should be fine.

ZaZathecat · 17/02/2022 15:26

I am! And to see a show too!

gogohm · 17/02/2022 15:34

Yes, it's daybreak before the red weather warning starts here in the south west. London isn't meant to get it as bad. I'm going out this evening

balalake · 17/02/2022 15:48

My decision would in part depend on who the train company is. Also if your train has a reasonable journey after your station.

Iwouldlikesomecake · 17/02/2022 15:52

Go. I'm going to work.

If you are within greater London the worst that will happen is that the trains will be a bit shit and you'll have to take like 4 buses (I've got home from North London to South London via overground and bus before, it's a headache and you end up very tired and possibly cold but it works if the trains are screwed).

Tomorrow will be the one - we are thinking of driving in rather than risking the train.

EscapeTheCastle · 17/02/2022 16:53

Just in case they cancel your train home maybe have some nearby hotels in mind that you could go to.

DetailMouse · 17/02/2022 17:06

I'm on the train . My dad's just called to make sure I've taken "precautions" at home. I didn't dare tell him where I was Grin

I didnthink about hotels but presumably everyone will want one if I do.

I'm outside Greater London

liveforsummer · 17/02/2022 17:44

Yes I'd go like you say you'll be home and tucked up in bed long before the worst starts

SquirmOfEels · 17/02/2022 17:47

I've been looking at the forecasts for London on various sites - this is a blend, but I don't know what lies behind the apps/sites so take these as indicative of when it's likely to be at its worst rather than closer prediction of what that's actually going to be

Amber warning starts at 0300, but the winds don't really start picking up until 0800, and will be getting exciting (gusts over 55, peaking around 65) somewhere between 1000/1100 until about 1400, then calming (to gusts under 50) by about 1700. Staying windy, but not as dramatic (gusts 20-35) all of Saturday, simiiar (gusts 20-45) on both Sunday and Monday,

JayAlfredPrufrock · 17/02/2022 17:48

So glad you are going.

I can’t believe the over reaction

Apparently loads of schools have announced that they are closed tomorrow.
