My great grandfather, born 1899

Oldraver · 17/02/2022 13:33

My Great Grans were born in 1899 and 1901, they were also be until my late teens 1980's ish

MisAnn · 17/02/2022 14:05

My great grand mother. Born 1881, died 1985 age 103 when I was 12 which is the same age she was when she went to work as a housekeeper!

Animum2 · 17/02/2022 14:05

My great gran was born in 1894 and died in 1990 so I was 14 when she died and I knew her pretty well as she lived with her daughter

Animum2 · 17/02/2022 14:06

I don't personally know anyone older , all grandparents have passed on

StarsAreWishes · 17/02/2022 14:36

In relation to the WW1/GreatWar question … my brother’s father was apparently too old to fight in WW1!

I am in my 40s. My (technically half) brother is nearly 20 years older than me. His father had him when he was in his 70s. So my brother’s father was born in roughly 1880-1885 and would have been in his 30s when the war broke out.

My great grandfather born in 1886, died in 1979 I was 3. Sadly his wife died in '49 so he was a widower for 30 years. In the 90's I cared a woman born in 1897, funnily enough she was much less Victorian than many of the women born around 1920...

As a PP said lots of spinsters....

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/02/2022 15:04

My GGfather, who must have been born in about 1868.

Lovely old man, who outlived both GFs.
He didn’t die until I was 14.

Maggiesgirl · 17/02/2022 15:57

My Grandfather was born in 1896, but he had an elder sister I met a few times. I couldn't tell you how much older though. I think something in my memory is telling me that there was two more sisters between them.

Isseywith3witchycats · 17/02/2022 16:09

my maternal grandmother was born the same year as your great grandmother and lived to be 90 so i knew her all my life till i was twenty

Toothsil · 17/02/2022 16:12

Probably my great grandfather who was born in 1897, he died when I was a year old.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 17/02/2022 16:14

My grandfather was born in 1890 and I definitely met him as a child but don't remember. He would have been in his 80s.

I'm in my 50s so that actually seems a bit crazy to me!

He married late and then my mum did too (for the times that is).

itssquidstella · 17/02/2022 16:14

When I was in sixth form I worked as a tea lady at the hospital - I loved it because I got to eat the leftover food and chat to all the old people. There was a lovely lady called Mabel who'd been born in 1906; she's probably the oldest person I’ve had a proper conversation with.

gogohm · 17/02/2022 16:20

My great grandmother was also born in 1878 @ivykaty44 she died when I was 6. Apparently I met my great grandfather but I don't remember, he was born in 1875 he died when I was 2

gogohm · 17/02/2022 16:24

@ivykaty44

Dp still likes to go and watch planes, based on how many other strange men are also parked on the perimeter road with cameras he's not alone, @Scarby9 your great grandmother was ahead of her time!

Today there's dozens watching for you arounds apparently, he's sensibly at home watching a live feed

BlondeWidow · 17/02/2022 16:26

I was born in 1984 and my grandfather was born 1890

mateysmum · 17/02/2022 16:33

My grandparents were all born between 1897 and 1902 and I remember them all very well.

Pegasushaswings · 17/02/2022 16:39

Glad it’s not just me who thinks of things like this! My maternal grandad was born in 1906, I was born 1969 so knew him for a good amount of time before he died , but thinking about it, when I was 16 in around 1985 I worked in an old peoples home and there was a lady there called Mrs Khan who was 100 so must have been born 1885 give or take. That blows my mind now but It didn’t seem such a long time ago back then.

mdh2020 · 17/02/2022 16:47

My great great grandmother who was born about 1860.

MrsWooster · 17/02/2022 16:51

1884: ‘nanny’, my maternal great grandma who died when I was 5.
1897: my grandpa, who died when I was 7. Astonishing the time bridged in so few steps.

MopaniTree · 17/02/2022 16:52

I looked after a lady born in 1899, she was 105 at the time and it was strange writing down a year of birth beginning with 18...
I later met another lady who was in her 100's and her father had been born in the 1870's. It was strange to think someone who was born in the 1870's still had a child alive in 2010 or thereabouts!

newtb · 17/02/2022 16:59

M'y grand-father, he died in 1958 when I was 2 at the age of 81, so born in 1877. I can remember him. He had prostate cancer and all his sisters lived to around/over 100.

Lipsandlashes · 17/02/2022 17:03

My grandmother was born in 1894. She died aged 99 years and 9 months. She was amazing - never took any regular medication and was completely on the ball until she passed away. She died peacefully in her sleep.

Chocolateis1ofyour5aday · 17/02/2022 17:19

My great grandma (born 1880) who loved watching horse racing and wrestling on the tv, and a nip of brandy in her morning coffee! She made the best butterfly cakes for our weekly "afternoon tea" visits to see her when we were small.

Bromse · 17/02/2022 17:19

My husband's lovely grandmother who lived to 103.
