Why does very windy weather make me feel so stressed.

It's ridiculous. I'm grinding my teeth with stress at every gust. I mean, I'm insured. What's the worst that could happen?

It makes me feel like that too! We have several large trees in our garden though that I’m worried will come crashing down (despite them all surviving the great storm of 1987)

I also hate heavy rain, I feel irrationally like it’s going to break through the windows and flood everything

LostThePot · 16/02/2022 19:49

I hate the wind too. Always have!

OurWorldIsChanging · 16/02/2022 19:51

Were your parents worried? My fear comes from my father, recognising that so many of my fears have been passed down, helps me realise that they are irrational.

FindmeuptheFarawaytree · 16/02/2022 20:08

I think its rational, the weather is powerful and fear helps you stay safe. Storms are dangerous. We've just lost a roof tile and a piece of gutter and I'm shaking from the massive bang! We're only in the SW, must be awful elsewhere. Dreading Friday and just hoping nothing too much worse happens.

PupInAPram · 16/02/2022 20:09

Not that I remember @OurWorldIsChanging. I definitely 'caught' arachnophobia from my mother's reaction to spiders, but I've actually managed to get over that. It's not fear but a kind of general stress response. I can't relax!

It does me too! I’m very stressed tonight because we have several old trees that could easily get uprooted, but even lesser wind makes me edgy and tense. I hate the noise, the flap, everything getting in your face with it, I think I have misophonia and the constant up and down noise really gets to me.

I am self-medicating with wine

makingitalladdup · 16/02/2022 20:11

I don't find it stressful if I'm inside but being outside in the wind make me really, really annoyed. I feel annoying thinking about how annoyed I'd be if I was outside right now. The wind is very attention seeking as weather goes.

WaterBottle2 · 16/02/2022 20:11

Me too. I feel anxious and already know I'll spend the night awake worrying about the storm.

makingitalladdup · 16/02/2022 20:12

*annoyed not annoying (although I accept I may also be annoying)

Bagelsandbrie · 16/02/2022 20:13

Same here. I worry the bins will blow against the car and damage it or the roof will go or the fence will go… or the lights will go! I’m a wimp.

Suzi888 · 16/02/2022 20:13

YANBU wind causes a lot of damage. I always sleep really well during a storm for some strange reason, but I dread looking outside. We back onto woodland and had a new fence and deck last year- I’m worried that the huge trees will fall this way. But what can you do eh? Sad

MadameHeisenberg · 16/02/2022 20:14

Ooh I’m the opposite, I love storms, they give me a kind of nervous energy and excitement. I’m in the Swiss Jura/Alps and we get some cracking storms in summer, although nothing comparable to when we lived in the Philippines & Malaysia!

FindingMeno · 16/02/2022 20:14

I once got blown by the wind so it was running me until luckily someone caught me and stopped me. I had no control, and windy weather has stressed me out ever since.

ProfYaffle · 16/02/2022 20:14

Me too. I agree it's rational, it's a real worry about damage and having the responsibility for sorting it out myself rather than getting my Dad to do it (I'm 50!)

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/02/2022 20:15

It makes me stressed because my house faces south west over playing fields and reservoirs and the wind comes in like a hammer. I live in fear of my roof and chimneys blowing away, and I definitely can't afford to fix that.

SweetFelicityArkright · 16/02/2022 20:16

I think for me it's just the thought of having to sort out the damage and deal with the fall out, or having to go out in the worst of it and try to make things safe, which I've had to do before, or deal with power cuts and the problems they can cause at work, I'm not too bothered about one at home as I've got battery lights, phone and iPad charged, and have had a shower, cooked dinner etc so it'll just be a case of sitting that out, different story if it happens at work though, and I'm not looking forward to venturing out in it to get there!

TheSmallAssassin · 16/02/2022 20:17

I think it's pretty rational. Being insured doesn't stop you having to deal with the immediate aftermath of damaged rooves, fences, cars, or injuries, and it's always a hassle to have to sort everything out even if someone else is paying for it!

HipposHaveNipples · 16/02/2022 20:17

I must be weird, I love storms. Something about being cosy and warm in the house and listening to the wind and rain raging outside. I love it.

Sprig1 · 16/02/2022 20:18

It is the noise for me. I don't mind if I am actually out in it but hate it when I am inside and I can hear all the racket.

bloodywhitecat · 16/02/2022 20:21

It doesn't usually bother me, other than making sure I have a flask of hot water for the baby's bottles should she need one but now it does. DH is at home to die, he's on an air mattress on his hospital bed and I am anxious about power-cuts when I am not usually. I am also very worried about not being able to see him too well if the power-cut is overnight.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 16/02/2022 20:23

Me too OP. I teach infants and windy weather makes them wild 😜

Blackopal · 16/02/2022 20:25

bloodywhitecat
Hope the storm is easy on you Flowers

TeacupDrama · 16/02/2022 20:26

we have had trees down we have insurance if they were to hit house but if blocking drive it is a chainsaw job chop heavy heavy work moving wood out of the way, even picking up all the twigs from lawn etc finding ways of disposing of it, it is amazing how much damage one large branch causes after being hit by UPS van the guy was lucky as he backed off but the top of the van was so flimsy looked like it was made of pizza boxes
but it's not so much insurance but the hassle of dealing with it all

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 16/02/2022 20:32

I'm stressed because we've had upteen power cuts with all the storms and lost water. Trees have come down everywhere and there has been a branch half hanging off my neighbours tree since the last storm and it is going to come off at some point and one of the directions it could fall is into my house and another is onto my car.

RedCandyApple · 16/02/2022 20:35

It’s not just you, very windy weather makes me feel really unsettled
