Nursery cost

Hi,

Is £10 per hour (for a 2 year old) fairly normal sounding? My childminder is finishing and she was charging £5 per hour and is brilliant 😭 So local alternatives are nursery’s and it’s hard to find prices without sending emails and waiting for replies. Which I have done! Just want to see what others to think.. thanks.

Ours charges a day rate of £52.50 for 7:30am - 6pm, discounted for FT. We are in the North East though, it is definitely location dependent. Childminders here are £35 a day.

Hangingtrousers · 16/02/2022 16:07

Ours is 80 for 7am till 6.30. Its depends on your area.

PurBal · 16/02/2022 16:09

Ours is £50 per day 730-1730. But my friend who lives 30 minutes away pays £85.

£10 an hour seems very high to me. I pay £63/day for DS2 in the south east, that lets me have him in 8-6 although I don’t necessarily have him in for that entire period.

Herald44 · 16/02/2022 16:09

Our south east preschool is 6.50 per hour. Is this a preschool or long day care?

ThatsALotOfPassionfruit · 16/02/2022 16:11

Ours is about £53 a day for 8-5.30. You’d supply nappies and wipes too

Headabovetheparakeet · 16/02/2022 16:12

I'm surprised a nursery is pricing by the hour, they normally price by half or full days. £10 ph is high, that would be around £100 a day if their session is 8am-6pm.

I'm afraid you really don't just need to email any you are interested in and ask for a price list.

Pinklittle · 16/02/2022 16:26

£55 a day 8am - 6pm xx

LadyCleathStuart · 16/02/2022 16:26

Just had a google at our local ones and they are all between 50/60 a day which is an increase from when I priced them when DC were little and they were about 40 per day.

Beees · 16/02/2022 16:30

I don't know any nurseries that price by the hour, that's a very odd pricing structure. Normally it's X amount for a half day or Y amount for a full day with some offering a discount if you do 5 full days.

I can't see how it would work properly for ratios or being full if they have people paying per hour?

Exactly same for us
HiKelsey · 16/02/2022 16:34

Mines £42.50 for 10 hours a day for over 2 and £47.50 for the same but for under 2s

Jellycatrabbit · 16/02/2022 16:40

Ours charges £52 per day or £26 per half day but does also have an hourly rate "if available". This is mostly just used for calculation of top ups for people using more than their free 30 hours e.g. I use 34 so pay £40 per week.

Maybe they are cheaper by the day/half day.

Tinkles78 · 16/02/2022 16:43

Ours is £42 for anything over 5 hours. We do 8-5.30. £10 an hour seems expensive!

Lavender2021 · 16/02/2022 16:45

Mines £64 a day 8am till 6pm, I'm guessing it will go up in April like last year doesn't include nappies but everything else.
Don't forget about tax free childcare if you qualify as that definitely helps.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/02/2022 16:45

£75-£65 depending on the age of child (babies the most expensive) 7.30-6

NuffSaidSam · 16/02/2022 16:46

I'd be concerned about a nursery that doesn't clearly state it's prices on its website.

Chocomelon · 16/02/2022 16:47

I thought most priced by the day or half day

When we were looking no nursery put the price online that we looked at and we had to email to ask.

No prices on websites at nurseries in my area

There is not a single nursery in our area (SE London/Kent borders) that has prices on their website.
NuffSaidSam · 16/02/2022 17:02

That's interesting. All the ones local to me have their fees clearly listed. I wonder why they wouldn't list their fees?

Herald44 · 16/02/2022 17:12

I think that long day nurseries charge by the day or half day as they are flexible in terms of pickup drop off etc

Preschools are different. They have set session times, usually school hours and term time only. So you pay for the number of hours you book to attend. It sounds as though OP is talking about a preschool or school nursery.

1TheCircle · 16/02/2022 17:26

There are a couple that list prices that are in the nearest city. Both are chain nurseries.

1TheCircle · 16/02/2022 17:27

Sounds like it’s pretty expensive then.

It’s an Outdoor Nursery. The ratio is 2 under 2’s to 1 adult which is nice.
