Matching mugs

I am about to move in with DP. One of us thinks it's imperative to have matching mugs (for when visitors come around but also as a general preference). The other prefers non matching sometimes novelty mugs and has an extensive collection. Who should win in the mug war? And if we can't agree on this, should we even move in together at all??

Never trust a man who keeps those mugs you get with Cadbury's Easter eggs.

Matching mugs

We're a novelty mug family here. None that are shaped as poo but it you come you may get a Murder, She Wrote, a Chris Whitty, a Star Wars or a Nemo.

I don't care what mug I get when I visit friends/ family. They're just mugs.

SockFluffInTheBath · 16/02/2022 15:36

We have some matching ones. We also have some random ones- not Easter egg mugs but nice ones we’ve picked up here and there.

Our mugs are an eclectic mix. Harry potter, disney, silly slogans, Emma Bridgewater, animals..

I don't like everything matching. Mainly because things do get broken.

BankersBonus · 16/02/2022 15:55

@Bunce1

Matching. I’m very type A about these things so matching all the way.

Kids had Easter eggs with mugs one year. They wanted to keep the mug but i binned them. How horrible is that!

Shock pretty awful actually.
BuddhaForMary · 16/02/2022 15:58

When you have a brew at mine you might get a baby Yoda head or a Slytherin house mug or one shaped like a Halloween pumpkin.

PineappleTart · 16/02/2022 16:00

I have a cupboard full of mismatched mugs. They're all selected for their nice feel/ hold.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 16/02/2022 16:02

Not a fan of novelty mugs. They don’t have to all match but I do like them to co-ordiante… mine are mostly various shades of blue and turquoise.

MintyGreenDream · 16/02/2022 16:06

I wish I had a Cunt mum, very jealous of that one

MintyGreenDream · 16/02/2022 16:07

Mug!!

Keladrythesaviour · 16/02/2022 16:07

We have nice matching mugs and a few odd ones gained from various places that we have for "outdoor use" as my DH often potters in the garage. I wouldn't serve guests in them but it saves me wasting good mugs outside and on the rare occasion we have a big group and not enough mugs, DH and I will use them so the guests get the nice ones.

Eclectic mix here, they aren't novelty as such but beautiful singles picked up on holiday, event ones (London 2012), a couple of Emma Bridgewater ones that were a gift. We have got a matching set of Denby ones that were a wedding present 20 years ago but they haven't been used for at least the last 19 of those years). Mix and match is easier, you know which was each person's if you take them back to the kitchen to refill.

minmooch · 16/02/2022 17:41

Mixed batch here too. Matching set (plain white), one offs and pairs. Some belonged to my mum and have a sentimental value. I like different mugs for my tea and coffee. Tea has to be in a thin rimmed mug, coffee in a thicker one. Don't know why but it's what I prefer. Partner has his coffee shot ones but other than that he probably wouldn't care. Not often we have people who have hot drinks here - visitors are usually on the beer, wine or cocktails so they wouldn't know what our mug situation is.

scooterbear · 16/02/2022 18:01

I'm the novelty mugger. I mean they aren't all novelty some are just nice mugs or ones that have sentimental value. I do like my 'smile if you've got an erotic piercing' one though Grin

I have strong opinions on mugs - they have to be porcelain, white on the inside, narrower on the base than at the rim etc.

I don’t like all completely matching, but I choose the same shape white mugs in different patterns. My number one choice is the Lomond shape from Dunoon. Pricey but I really like them.

Justkeeppedaling · 16/02/2022 18:14

We have matching mugs for best and a collection of motley mugs for every day.

ParentalGuidances · 16/02/2022 18:28

My pet hate is mismatched mugs, however, like you mention, if you can’t agree on this then good luck for the future

We have a set of four that match, a couple of pairs, and a load of random ones. The randoms ones are gifts for one of us (best dad, funny ones), so when they get too numerous they go to work with DH or in my office to store pens.

We need a cull at the moment because FILs Christmas gift (three themed mugs for the three of us) has exceeded capacity.

I've got a couple of the Dunoons and love them, they are my favourites at the moment (only discovered them a few months ago).
Thatsplentyjack · 16/02/2022 20:24

I have 3 matching white mugs, 2 matching grey mugs and 2 matching green mugs and then about 60 random mugs that take up loads of space bit don't get used and that's after I had through a good 20-30 other random mugs away xx

HipHipPuree · 16/02/2022 20:25

All Emma Bridgewater, but all different patterns (collected over many years).

Chishnfips · 16/02/2022 20:26

Mismatched because different types of mugs have different types of drinks. Coffee and hot chocolate in the oversized mugs. Green tea and sencha in the glass mugs. Black tea in proper china.

Brilliant!

I'm googling where to find a baby Yoda mug right now...

FourChimneys · 16/02/2022 20:31

Non matching here but no naff novelty ones. Quite an extensive collection and the adult DC plus their partners each have their own in the cupboard and will get those out to use. My best friend also has a favourite one so I tend to keep that for her rather than using it for other visitors.
